View Full Version : Sushi

People from the Japanese restaurant 'Moshi, Moshi' came into school today to deliver a talk about sushi and endangered fish. Very entertaining watching the students try something different. Only two of them were sick. They couldn't cope with the fact that tuna was combined with rice. They'd eat this normally but because it was 'sushi' it was as strange as snails or frogs' legs.
Cut to the chase - has anyone had any good food experiences with sushi or other cusine related to the martial arts that they study? Any recommendations?

I've had good experiences. They usually involve going to a local sushi bar for lunch, where the staff is really nice and will give me an extra roll, some specialty not on the menu.
I've never studied La Savate, but I don't know if I could stomach escargot. Everybody loves Chinese food... What does that leave in the way of odd cuisine? Pentjak Silat? Are any of the countries where they eat sheep's head or chilled monkey brain covered by Silat?

I love sushi (and a side of Saki hehehehe). But I do a Korean MA. Oh yea, I love Korean food, too. That's right.
I tried Korean food just because I did a korean MA (I started in TSD in NJ and my grandmaster is Korean). I loved it. Now I have it, at least, once a week. I got into sushi and saki because the Korean restuarant I went to in my hometown made it, so I tried it.
Now my hunny cooks Korean, and makes sushi. He learned it just for me (and he likes it, too :) ), and buys the best Japanese Saki. He's so sweet :D

Snails don't go down too well with our students either. They tend to accumulate in the staff room with the left over anaemic looking frogs' legs. They eat the baguettes though.
I've had some great experiences with Sake. Unfortunately, I can't remember any of them :D Personally, I like sushi. I'd never tried it until I went to France once and my father made me taste it. I thought I'd hate it, but I liked it once I'd tried it. I think people have to overcome a psychological barrier when faced with raw fish on cold rice.

Thinking about psychological barriers - is there anything you wouldn't eat? A fusion restaurant in Lewes does a nice line in kangeroo pie. (Would you have to keep hold of it to stop it hopping off the table?) I've also heard of an insect restaurant in London.

Ostrich meat is absolutely fabulous. I was lucky enough to go to South Africa on business a few years ago, and had Ostrich Meat on a skewer. It was done in some kind of Sweet n Sour sauce, almost Cantonese style. It had flavour like beef, and a dissolving texture like Lamb. Yum Yum Yum.

There was a time when supermarkets were experimenting with selling ostrich and kangeroo. I'm unsure whether they still do but I think they weren't selling very many.
I wouldn't be fussy about anything really. I've had some mishap's in foreign countries where I couldn't read the menu properly and ending up eating something vile. I've tried Shark steak before, that was a bit like fresh tuna. One thing I won't EVER eat, is Laverbread. Its a 'yummy' concoction of Seaweed and oatmeal Yuk.

I have never tried Sushi. I'm one of those poor people that tend to suffer from food poisening at the drop of a hat - besides Homer Simpson put me off after his "I'm gonna die after eating blowfish" episode. :(

Doh!
Isn't laverbread a welsh 'dish'?

My personal view is that I'll try anything at least once. Have eaten rat before as well as grasshopper/cricket type thing while in Thailand. I eat Haggis three or four times a year. Have eaten shark, alligator, swordfish and various other things. Have yet to try kangaroo or ostrich. Maybe when I'm in South Africa this summer.
Yeah Rowlie, laverbread is a Welsh "delicacy." If you're ever offered Welsh food, don't eat it, because apart from rarebit, its all gross. Silver, what exactly is in Haggis? As far as I know, its sheeps stomach or something like that?
I don't know if anyone saw this thing on TV the other day. It was an out-takes show, and they had a clip of some guy feeding people spagetti that had been dyed pink and telling them it was raw earthworms. Funnily enough, everyone spat it out and said it was disgusting as soon as they were told it was worms :)

Maybe the 'worm' eaters should have listened to Mas Oyama's adage about keeping mouths shut, Kyokushin girl? It's funny that some foods, even in this county, have gone in and out of fashion. Rabbit used to be a common table dish as was pigeon. Most kids wouldn't eat those now. Jellied eels - anyone tried those?
I've tried rabbit and pigeon, but I've never tried jellied eels, and wouldn't want to either. They look gross.

i have tried most things...shark, boar, ostrich...all the usual freaky ****...i have tried sushi....wasn't too bad ..though the 2 bottles of saki i had prior to eating may have contibuted to my bravery.
I ate without asking when i was in thailand.....god knows what i digested when i was out there..
But there is one food i will not touch ...no way , no how ....never....
.Fish fingers ...these are the spawn of satan himself.
Never will i put one of those fish based products in my mouth again.....ok i may have eaten horse and dog ( not my pets) but at least i knew what i was eating. There could be dead russian seamen in those little parcels of aquatic poison.
Surely i can not be the only one out here who seas what is going on......they put chemicals in them to make you want more...to further enrich Captain Birdseye.....to give him the working capital to take over the WORLD.........
PLease...help me put an end to this evil scheme before it is too late.
Send all cheques, made payable to C.rimes A.gainst S.ea H.armony..or C.A.S.H to me at my home address and we will destroy this hideous fiend and put an end to this destructive conflict and bring order to the galaxy.
Cod be with you.
:) :)
You forgot your home address Fraser. How am I meant to send you all my fishfingers for you to dispose of safely, if I don't know where to send them to? :D
I think you're right though, there must be some weird chemicals in those fishfingers. I mean look at Captain Birdseye. He went from being about 70, to about 25, and now he's back to 70 again!

i need thirteen of you ...please apply with your credentials and any other relevent skills as soon as possible.....
i can promise nothing but a chance to kill captain birdseye and a glorious death.

If you want to know the traditional haggis it consists of:
1 sheep's stomach (thoroughly cleaned)
1 sheep's liver
1 sheep's heart
1 sheep's lung
1lb beef suet
1 large onion
1 tablespoon salt
1 tablespoon black pepper
1lb oatmeal

Some pyschologist or other conducted an experiment where he invited people round for a meal and then served them a traditional Sunday roast but used food colouring (so there was no change to the flavour) on all the ingredients. People hardly touched their food despite his reassurance that it was fine and the fact that he was eating with them. Just goes to show!
Greyghost - I will never eat fish fingers again!!! Thank you for enlightening me! Carpe testi!!! :D

Definitely!!! Once we've finished him off we should go and look for CAPTAIN Birdseye. It is going to be a hard fight though...have you seen how many followers he has?!?
Through use of martial arts, truth, justice, fighting dirty and downright cheating we shall prevail!!:D

This is an important battle between good and evil!!! This is akin to the Rebellion v the Empire. We are outnumbered and outgunned but we will prevail!!! Where's my X-Wing? :woo:

There is the tale of the artist who went 'colour' blind and could only see in shades of black and white. (His paintings reflect this and are also in black and white.) He found that only seeing these tones completely put him off his food and so he resorted to eating only foods that he knew were black or white - white bread/rice, olives etc.
