What is your favorite martial arts movie?

That's tough. I like a lot of them. But I think I'd have to go with Jet Li's "Fist of Legend" ... but it's a close call with a lot of others.

Mike,
Excellent movie, I had to go buy it a few months ago LOL. I guess that if Shaolin, Wheel of Life qualifies that would be one of my top movies, but I really can't pin it to just one overall.

Yup ... like I say, it's very hard for me to pin *one* down. Another good one is "Iron and Silk" ... based on a true story about a guy (Mark Salzman) who went to China to teach English. He wound up training in MA there ... and wound up training with Pan Qing Fu. It's a really good movie ... and a good book. The movie actually stars Mark and Pan as themselves.
I also like pretty much everything I've seen of Jackie Chan and Jet Li (though Jackie's "Half A Loaf of Kung Fu" and "Spiritual Kung Fu" were a bit out there :)
A surprisingly good flick was "One Man's Justice" with Brian Boswick ... I happened to catch part of it on cable late one night during a bout of insomnia. I liked what I saw so I went and rented it. The story line is pretty basic ... Boswick sees his wife and daughter gunned down and he gets shot when he tries to save them. He barely survives, then, after he gets out of the hospital and gets himself back in shape, he goes hunting. The fight scenes, though, are surprisingly (especially given some of the work in other Boswick movies) good.
I liked "Bloodsport."
I loved "Crouching Tiger."
One of my all-time favorites would have to be "Best of the Best." I loved the way it was plotted out ... there were no good guys and bad guys ... just people ... but they were portrayed very well and the characters were developed very well.
As I say ... my list is pretty big. There are probably 100 vids in my top 10 :)

LOL I know what you mean, I haven't seen Iron and Silk, any idea where I can pick it up?
I saw a thing that was made on Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung and how they trained. It was good but an older flick.

Yeah ... I haven't seen that ... but I've heard about it (and seen a clip or two). I can't remember what it was called either.
Umm ... after I wrote my little spiel, I got curious. I saw the movie several years ago at a friend's house and loved it. But I had never seen it for sale or rent. I ran a search and found it for sale here: http://half.ebay.com/cat/buy/prod.cgi?cpid=1982044&domain_id=1877&ad=1881

I was a little bit disappointed with "Crouching Tiger" because it seemed that all the fight scenes were done in low light.
I really enjoy Jackie Chan's outtakes at the end of his movies.
The back view of Van Damme doing that split in the movie Double Impact is quite enjoyable.
I don't think I have any one favorite because
I like a lot of them for different reasons.

Quite disgusted at your JCVD comment........what a thing for a lady to say.
i'll send you a photo of me doing the same....(not!).
i suppose on your basis of liking a film...i should vote for anything Cynthia Rothrock and Kathy Long have done!!!!!
Spectacular women. Wow!!!:woo:  :woo:

Hey! What can I say? Sometimes my mind does a perfectly executed forward roll right into the gutter. It's OK though, there are usually plenty of people already there to provide a soft landing.
I definitely agree with you.
Cynthia Rothrock and Kathy Long are very impressive martial artists. Is that what you meant or did your mind just join me in the gutter?

Personally, I like all of his. He only did 4 (not counting "Game of Death" which is barely a Bruce Lee movie at all).
All 4 are good.
The titles (as released in America, anyway) are:
"Fists of Fury"
"The Chinese Connection"
"Return of the Dragon"
"Enter the Dragon"
"Game of Death" was a project Lee started but never finished. He had filmed some of the final fight scenes then he started working on "Enter the Dragon" ... then he died before he could finish "Game of Death." The studio took some of the footage he'd filmed and, using some really cheesy techniques (including a cardboard cutout of Bruce's head at one point) they put together a movie they called "Game of Death" ... it didn't hold much resemblance to Lee's original idea and it's not a very good movie. But it's entertaining to watch for fight scenes that Bruce did film before his death.
My personal favorite is "The Chinese Connection" (which, coincidentally, the Jet Li movie that I mentioned earlier, "Fist of Legend" was a remake of this movie ... I actually like Li's telling of the story better ... but Bruce's is good too).
All 4 are good, though. Of course, you kinda have to keep in mind that they were shot in the early 70's ... so some of the dialogue seems hokey as hell today. Also, in my opinion, Bruce wasn't an exception actor (I've seen worse, though). Bruce was using the movies as a medium to expose the masses to his vision of martial arts ... and he did OK with that. The actual fight scenes are not always realistic ... the camera isn't kind to realistic fight scenes and Bruce knew that. But they were *much* more realistic than the fight scenes that were common in MA movies of the day (which mostly fell into the category of "Kung Fu Theatre" stuff).
There's a lot of interesting history around these movies, though. Sammo Hung is fighting Bruce in the opening scene of "Enter the Dragon." Jackie Chan is an extra in one of the big fight scenes and Bruce clocked Jackie (in reality) with a pair of nunchaku during the filming. Jackie was also a stunt man in "The Chinese Connection" and did a stunt in it that everyone thought was impossible. If I recall (from Jackie's autobiography), when Bruce explained what he wanted, the stunt coordinator said, "No one is crazy enough to try that." Jackie stepped up and said, "I'll try it."
Personally, I'd recommend you go rent all 5 movies ... including "Game of Death" ... it's worth watching once just to see [a] Bruce in some good action sequences and [b] how corny a job the production company did trying to capitalize on Bruce's name after his death. Also, "Game of Death" has the first nunchaku vs. nunchaku fight ever filmed (vs. Bruce and Dan Inosanto). And the fight scene between Bruce and Kareem Abdul Jabar is entertaining too.

Brain edema. I'm not sure they've completely pinned down the cause of the edema. In the stuff I've read/heard, he had been having some trouble with headaches and had had a fainting spell a few days before his death. He died at the apartment of a female actress who he was working on a movie with. She gave him something for his headache and he laid down to take a nap. He never woke up.

Iron Monkey`s a good one, anything with Donnie Yen is normally pretty entertaining.
I`d probably say anything by Jet Li, who does get a lot of attention but is pretty much worth it.
Twin Warriors especially has some excellent fight scenes, and Michelle Yeoh which is always a good thing

Iron Monkey
Perfect Weapon (because I know Jeff Speakman)
Above the Law ( Segal is good in this one )
Marked for Death
Any Cynthia Rothrock movie ( because I know her too )have a cool personal video of her in China doing Wu-Shu, she was on a fantastic team and that si how she was discovered.
Enter the Dragon
Star Wars - all episodes my absolute favorites!
Lethal Weapon - all of them Mel Gibson and Danny Glover are cool! Jet Li gets himself discovered.
and so many others

I have to say I'm not a big fan of the "martial arts movie", there OK with a beer and a takeaway but I have yet to see more than a few that are actually a good film in their own right.
Technically I liked "Blade", although I didn't think the film was great, the "perfect weapons" opening sequence with the Kata was brilliant - and had me trawling to find a kenpo class in the UK (with no success!). "The Matrix" has some brilliant martial arts scenes by non-martial artists and is so far my favorite film as well.
Iron Monkey I enjoyed, not to much wire work, but I have to say I didn't enjoy the fight scenes in Crouching Tiger (because of the wire work) although I thought it was a good film otherwise.
Brendon Lee is good in "rapid fire", Jeff wincott is good in "mission of justice", and of course roberts and rhee in "Best of the best" although all these films are a bit of a cliche but great cliche cheese fests would not be complete without "hard to kill" (Steven Segal).
One of my favorite "martial arts films" has to be "romeo must die", but for pure energy, pace, humour and "...he has never just done that...!" you have to go a long way to beat Jackie Chan. The best of which I think are "Armour of god" and "who am I"
Just an opinion...

If you're looking for Kenpo/Kempo you either have to move to Devon (great place to live, nice pace of life), Cambridgeshire (Shunryu Kempo, the only class outside of the US), Leeds (Kempo Ryu) or Newport (Kempo Ryu).
Outside of those areas you'd be hard-pushed to find it.

I don't think anyone has mentioned 'The Bourne Identity', but I thought it was awesome for its few extremely well done fight scenes. All the fight scenes are done in Arnis/Kali (whatever you want to call it) as far as I know, and apparently Matt Damon has been training with Dan Inosanto personally since 6 months before the filming of the movie. Its fantastic, in the movie in one of the fight scenes he uses a ball point pen as his improvised weapon which is quite impressive and turns out well, and in another case he completely dispatches with and incapacitates two police officers simultaneously while stealing one of the gun's. It's sweeet. :D

Yup. Entertaining. The fight scenes were decent. The overall plot wasn't all that realistic. It's rare that people actually have a rich father they haven't seen in decades who's willing to provide a sizable chunk of change.
But, overall, I thought it was a decent movie. I mean, after all, most movies have a "suspension of disbelief" factor involved :)

GHOST DOG – Way of the Samurai
Not my favourite martial arts film of all time, in fact you might not even call it a martial arts film! However, I enjoyed it a lot! A modern day samurai film with guns instead of swords.
Here’s some of the quotes ghost dog read out during the film from HAGAKURE: THE BOOK OF THE SAMURAI
Ghost Dog: There is something to be learned from a rainstorm. When meeting with a sudden shower, you try not to get wet and run quickly along the road. But doing such things as passing under the eaves of houses, you still get wet. When you are resolved from the beginning, you will not be perplexed, though you still get the same soaking. This understanding extends to everything.
Ghost Dog: Our bodies are given life from the midst of nothingness. Existing where there is nothing is the meaning of the phrase, "form is emptiness." That all things are provided for by nothingness is the meaning of the phrase, "Emptiness is form." One should not think that these are two separate things.
Ghost Dog: When one has made a decision to kill a person, even if it will be very difficult to succeed by advancing straight ahead, it will not do to think about doing it in a long, roundabout way. One's heart may slacken, he may miss his chance, and by and large there will be no success. The Way of the Samurai is one of immediacy, and it is best to dash in headlong.
Ghost Dog: It is said that what is called "the spirit of an age" is something to which one cannot return. That this spirit gradually dissipates is due to the world's coming to an end. In the same way, a single year does not have just spring or summer. A single day, too, is the same. For this reason, although one would like to change today's world back to the spirit of one hundred years or more ago, it cannot be done. Thus it is important to make the best out of every generation.
Ghost Dog: Among the maxims on Lord Naoshige's wall, there was this one: "Matters of great concern should be treated lightly." Master Ittei commented, "Matters of small concern should be treated seriously."
Ghost Dog: "And every day, the samurai should consider himself as dead."
Ghost Dog: "It is a good viewpoint to see the world as a dream. When you have something like a
nightmare, you will wake up and tell yourself that it was only a dream. It is said that the world we live in is not a bit different from this."
Ghost Dog: "Even if one's head were to be suddenly cut off, he should be able to do one more
action with certainty. With martial valor, if one becomes like a revengeful ghost and shows great determination, though his head is cut off, he should not die."

Echoing mushrooms comments, i'm pretty sure I posted on this thread aswell.
My favourite martial arts movie has to be Jet Li's "Fist of Legend". It had everything that I would want from a martial arts movie.
I enjoy watching wire-fu but only when its in the right context for example in the Matrix as it adds to the story it was ideal but in some films it is blatantly out of place. Fist of Legend hardly had any wirefu, maybe one or two scenes but realtively it was a film, true to martial arts.

I thought Gladiator was great, underground boxing movie from 1992 with James Marshall and Cuba Gooding Jr. Surprisingly good for a movie about boxing. Big Trouble in Little China is one of my favourites, good for a laugh, one of the few action movies where the main character is completely useless at fighting and the sidekick has to do all the work. The One was cool especially how they had Jet Li with a linier fighting style vs Jet Li with a circular fighting style. And that Jackie Chan movie where everyone is fighting on bicycles in those narrow alleyways.

I would have to say that one of my all time favourite martial arts movies has to be Bruce Lee's "Enter the Dragon". If you haven't seen it then believe me you DO want to!!!
Jackie Chan's best movie is "Police Story" cause of the insane action, stunts and martial artistry.

I saw Enter the Dragon a couple of days ago - the first time since I began MA. Although it's a complete joke, it's still clear how this film had the impact it did in the early 70's.
The main joke, obviously, is that this entirely Chinese film has 3 kung fu exponents. Mr Han on his secret island trains an army of... karateka (about 150 of them), despite showing kung fu himself. And evil Mr Han is the only one doing proper kung fu, though not well. In the beginning, the genius Sammo Hung (kickboxing!) takes some lame dives from BL's 'devastating' onslaught. Well filmed and a good script, though.
My favourite is Jackie Chan: Drunken Master.
Ghostdog rocks, too. Did anyone else have to rush out and buy Hagakure after watching it?
Seven Samurai is great but no good for a quick fix of MA.

I'd have to second that, Drunken Master is by far my fave MA flick of all time, I must have seen it a hundred times but it never seems to loose it, a timeless classic, Snake in the eagles shadow comes a close second with pretty much all the same actors all playing similar roles, has the same comedy element and Hwang Jang-lee as the bad guy - Did anyone know he trained the korean army in MA!
Dragons forever is up there as well with Sammo Hung, Yuen Biao and Jackie Chan playing the lead role, the last fight scenes in that film are sick!! and the last fight with Benny 'The Jet' Urquidez and chan is evil.

Enter the Dragon is always a favourite, but I also quite enjoyed Wesely Snipes in Blade.
