can anyone tell me if this "kobudera" is part of real authentic ninjutsu ? I heard it has to do with the mistical teachings, some referer to it as the "ninja magic", but I don't trust the source
And for those of you who raised your eyebrow, yes! it sounds like "ninja boom fiction" to me too

Ok, lets chat about the infamous Kobudera...
Kobudera is not necessarly "Ninja Magic", but "Mystical Warrior Magic"...
Things believed to be within the Kobudera contigent are Genjutsu(art of ilusions), Yojutsu(art of the supernatural "tricks") and Onmyodo(The Way of In/Yo -Rough translation, there is really more to it...).

Actually no, Kobudera is a term, although not everyone has been aware of it, related to mystics refuged in the mountains and therefore exposed to some like the shinobi of the "Amida-shu" and some other "ronin" or refuged warriors in the mountain region. At least that far I have found out.
As we can see, the media has done its part to expose the term "Kobudera"for the movie-like atmosphere, just like the mis-interpretated concept of "Ninja" and "Ninjutsu".
And as I said, so far the arts or disciplines related to "Kobudera" is Genjutsu, Yojutsu and elements of Onmyodo.

Well, just done a google on it,
The only things i could find was it refer to it been a temple of knobs!?!?!
(actually because it was made of knobby wood, not ashida kims dojo!! :D )
Or a 31 yr old african american male seeking a female!!
Where do you get your source detailing it from the onmyodo? as i thought there would be more on the net about it.
Just a quickie, how do you know this at 8 years old, born in 96 in your profile, blimey, thats an achievement!! :D

I have a Ninjutsu book written in the early 1900's, which also includes several paragraphs about magic. I will take a look when I get home to see if I can find any references about it, but I don't recall the term being used.
Also, I looked for the word in a Japanese dictionary and could not find anything on the word. Does anyone have the kanji for it? The only kanji for dera (Shift-JIS 8E9B - reading is ji and tera) that I could find means Buddhist temple.

The American Ninja Collection
Classic straight-to-video movie magic. Take your pick of red, yellow or blue ninja baddies.
Although, I'm left puzzled as to why none of the ninjas wore headbands as that is clearly the sign of a true master :D
...And wasn't the original American Ninja based on a true story?

Well, I looked in the book and it did not mention it. If anyone has any resources on this term, other than the movie that some had mentioned, please let me know.

Okay, thanks anyway. We have our annual Budo Bash again in Cricklade next month with John Gardner and Bill Liddle.
I'd best get my deposit paid for that because that's selling out fast too.
I met Brian Duckers in Japan last year. I'd like to attend one of his seminars some time, hmm, May does sound good.

i have only ever come accross one use of the term 'kobudera' in the vague context of ninjutsu, that was in the 1980 book, 'the ninja' by eric van lustbader.
it is described as a stage beyond the kuji-kiri where the practioner is capable of bending the appearance of reality to onlookers/enemies to serve their own ends.
as this book is a fictional novel, draw your own conclusions...however...
the book is a good read and considering the time it was written, does have a degree of accuracy regarding the research carried out (hatsumi etc are not mentioned, but the use of ninjutsu as described is compelling)
whether or not the 'kobudera' is an ancient aspect of the 'mysical' side of ninjutsu i couldn't say...perhaps it was a term ascribed to the feats that the ninja apparently possesed by the general population, or maybe just another myth...
i would be interested where obimikenobi found it mentioned in relation to the art and if the source is indeed lustbaders novels

My profile says I born in 96? Oops, no, no, no...sorry about that, the year is not correct. Is there anyway I can fix that..Oh Boy! Back to eight years old...? I wish to be eight years old with the experience I have now, wow, that would be...great to a certain degree...
I am doing research to find the document that made reference to the term "Kobudera". I know so far that it deals with Genjutsu, Yojutsu and elements from Onmyodo. So far it was related to a group of shinobi that had a cult to the Amida Butsu. This is by kuden, but there is reference to a document and as soon as I get the info I will post it here.
