Greetings to all,

Obviously, since I'm posting in this section I am new to martial arts, and would respectfully ask for the help of those in the know concerning my art of choice. I actually have several questions which sort of run together and collectively influence my decision, some more than others. After a few weeks of online research, I find myself drawn mostly to judo, aikido, and hapkido.

Physically, I am 6'01", 160 lbs; thin yet out of shape and not particularly flexible, as I have very long legs and rarely do my stretching routine, but I see neither of these as factors for very long. I suppose my favored styles aren't the best match for my body type, but striking takes a back seat for my first choice (I must point out however that I am in no way ruling out a chinese art in my future). For this reason, hapkido is so far my very first choice, as it addresses striking in accompaniment with grappling and throwing techniques.

What is most important to me in my involvement in the martial arts is greater concentration abilities and powers of focus, which has always been extremely difficult for me (imagine a person somewhere between ADD and Avoidant Personality Disorder and you get the picture). From the three I specified, is there one art which definitely exercises and hones concentration more than another?

On the other end of the spectrum, competition would be least in importance to me. Remember I don't want to step on anyone's (style's) toes when I ask: is the difference between aikido and judo a substantial one? That is to say, are many techniques taught in judo missing from aikido? I ask because judo seems much more competition-oriented, which as I've said, is the least of my concerns.

Thanks in advance for your help, and congratulations on an extremely helpful website.

Maybe Tai Chi...

Aikido and Judo are pretty much opposite ends of the spectrum ;)

as I understand that both originally drew from jujitsu, in what aspect are they opposites?

also to clarify: although self-discipline is the first reason for my interest in the martial arts, it is not the only factor in my decision. self-defense; physical fitness; I am trying to make a balanced choice, considering all elements to see which way I find myself leaning, and if a particularly strong quality of one tips the scales. for instance, even with my gravitation towards an art with strong joint locks and throws, I am reluctant to commit to a style with no strikes at all, as it seems to be a disadvantage as defense.

am i answering my own question and pointing myself towards hapkido?

Hello Midsentence;

Aikido schools vary a lot, from extremely soft to moderatly heavy workout. Judo is always good for a heavy workout. If you like the looks of Judo but don't want to compete a lot, find a good Jujutsu school. If you like the looks of Judo & JJJ but want more kicking, then check out Hapkido. They are all good styles, so go find a dojo and take a few free intro. classes, and see what you like the best.

This I didn't know, I thought aikido was exclusively soft, thanks.

Until you added the "self defence" bit I was going to recommend Iaido. Now I really don't know, but Aikido is probably as good for concentration as any, and will improve your self-defence skills, though probably not as quickly as some other arts.

Can't really comment on hapkido I'm afraid...

I'm biased because I really like Hapkido...

To address your concerns... the most important thing is to go and try out the nearby "finalist" schools and see which one fits you bets.

In my opinion, Hapkido is pretty well rounded on breakfalls, self defence and striking. One of the most importnat things about Hapkido is the attention paid to developing "ki", or power. (Please, anti-"ki" people save your arguments for the "ki" thread...) We develop our energy, power, and effectiveness through proper breathing, focus, and target choice. In this aspect, if you are looking for a martial art that will help you with focus, I would recommend trying Hapkido.

I appreciate all of the responses, but I think Thomas just helped me decide upon Hapkido. I know of one do jang ( http://www.tmi-selfdefense.com ) not too far from where I'm living now, which I can go check out in person.

Thanks everyone.

Wow... I'm glad you plan to try Hapkido... and I hope the school you find is excellent with a great instructor. If it doesn't work out, I hope you stick with it and move on to a better school. Good luck!
