Ok, in case no one knows what I am talking about. Final Fu is a tv show on MTV that started tonight. It's essentially a reality type show with all the contestants being martial artists. The show consists of the contestants doing challenges that are martial art themed. For example tonight the challenge was to go through a tight obstacle type maze that had wire tied all through it and hit buttons on pillars. Think of the scene in Entrapment with Catherine Zeta Jones. The catch was that the wire was tied to vases and other breakable objects and the buttons that you had to press were usually chest level and you had to use your feet only. Points were deducted for any broken items and any buttons that were not pressed.
After the challenge comes the sparring. They pit the two lowest point totals together, the next two, and so on. In this nights episode they had a tae kwon do stylist versus a shorei ryu stylist. Fast paced and a little to chaotic but overall fun to watch. I felt the fighting at the Pro-Hapkido tournaments were actually better. i.e. cleaner technique.
Since tonight was the first show I'll reserve judgement but so far it seems like it's interesting but not a show that will last.
The neat twist was making the challenges martial art based and the sparring. 3 rounds of 3 minutes iirc.
The reason why I put this into the Hapkido forum is because apparently on the show there is a contestant that is representing Hapkido who is a 1st degree black belt. I was wondering if anyone on the forum knows who he is and whom he's trained with.

Thanks for the info. On the show he stated he was representing Hapkido and wanted to make his art known. Does he have a Tae Kwon Do black belt as well? Makes me wonder if he's done more Tae Kwon Do and just wanted to say he was Hapkido to stand out since there were so many Tae Kwon Do contestants.
I checked out that other thread before I posted this one but it was mostly bashing the show so I stuck clear of it. I may prefer the UFC and Pride but I was entertained in watching Final Fu. You just gotta take it for what it's worth.

Personally I can't see this making Hapkido more well known. He can't use 90% of Hapkido in the ring. Limited to the rules he'll fight the same as everyone else.

I noticed a different approach between the Shorei Ryu stylist and the TKD stylist last night, most definitely although the rules were the same.
We'll have to wait to see how Jeffery the Hapkidoist fairs against whoever his opponent may be.
BTW .... I read he did have TKD exp. but looking back on the show it doesn't state that so scratch that ... can't believe everything you read on the net.
Anyway, he stated last night in his introduction that Hapkido needs more respect than people give it, Will this do it???

Just an update the Hapkido guy did terrible in the sparring. He started off with a ROLL to the side of his opponent. A roll in a sparring match... it pretty much went down hill from there. I hate to be harsh but he had terrible sparring skills. He did comment that he wouldn't be able to use any of his joint locking skills but imho Hapkido is about blending striking and joint locking not sacrificing your striking skills and just have joint locking skills. He's about in the middle of the contest.
I can't believe the XMA guys are leading this thing...

Don't feel bad I actually watched most of it. and I feel the same ..

XMA is unfortunately becoming many peoples perception of what MA is. But that is our pop culture at work. This amazing evolution of the mindset of the uneducated public has been growing exponentially since the mass media (TV and movie) overexaggerate MA in an effort to sell an exciting movie. Traditional Martial Arts will endure this as it always has, and will no doubt be around in the future. I don't believe "funky fu" will last 1 season.

XMA are the really flashy martial artists. Somersaults into kicks, etc. etc. Really movie fu like stuff. Stands for eXtreme Martial Arts.
Here is an example. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4334256450322874750&q=xma
