Hi Dogan,

welcome to MAP.

I was trying to find out something similar a while back and got some good response from the Karate heavy weights on the board;

Styles of Karate (http://www.martialartsplanet.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=584)

If you want some information on Kyokushinkai (http://www.martialartsplanet.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4564) check this thread out.

Which is "the best" is relative. It depends on what you are looking for in an art. Kyokushinkai may be the best for me, but its not the best for everyone.

Goju Ryu: http://www.iogkf.it/hist.htm

Kyokushin: http://www.fightingart.ca/kyokushin.history.htm

Isshinryu: http://w3.trib.com/~smammon/isshin.html

Shotokan: http://www.zee.com/skmn/index.php (I think that will help, not sure)

Zujitsu: http://www.zujitsu.com/whatis.html

Kenpo: http://www.kenponet.com/ (Look at the FAQs section)

I could not find a good site explaining Shin Budo or Ryokukai, but I think they are both found in Aikido. Sorry.

My school started off as Okinawan/ Isshin-Ryu. We punch with our thumb on top of our fist instead of infront.

I have studied both Sh1to Kai and Wado Ryu, (Wado for many years). I have friends with expertice in other styles of martial arts ranging from Ninjitsu to Shaolin to Gracie Jujitsu.

I have eventually reached the opinion that no "style" is superior. It is the instructor's knowledge, their ability to teach that knowledge and the student's desire to learn and their self-discipline to continually train that makes someone's martial skills superior.

There is no best way, otherwise we would all follow that one way. When you find a teacher with whom you can relate and a school that feels like home then travel that path if you feel its right.

Terry is their a specific reason for this thumb position is Isshin Ryu, ie a combined thumb strike or because it feels more natural?

Te-jitsu anyone? aka Traditional Karate or for me Traditional Kempo Karate (of Okinawan origin) Every one has the same weakness, we all have joints and nerves that react the same way no matter who you are. Te-jitsu focuses on these points for most of its traditional self defence training that is derived from our katas. Also heavy contact, continuous hit sparring but it is not our main focus in training. We also do a lot of basics for aerobic and technique training, with some strength exercises like push ups and other similar exercises, but our main focus is to train our instincts using our katas to defend our selves. A lot of information but I wanted explain Te-jitsu.

I agree with WadoDon when ti comes to which style is better. What ever works best for you is good enough.

Mike:

The Isshin Ryu thumb on top brings into play an extra tendon on the wrist, making the structure of the wrist stronger during impact. If you tense and move the thumb from the standard karate punch position to the top you will actually see the ligament and muscles and tendons move in your arm. It is a small thing that adds up to big things.

A simple test is to take a standard twisting punch and extend and hold. have somone try to hold your fist from the front and bend it down. Now do the same with the thumb on top and you will find it a bit harder to bend. Many with this simple test will see no signifigant difference, but it will increase the strength of the wrist by 10%, add a change in structure by using a verticle punch, which keeps the elbow close to the body and you add another 10%, now shorten the stance, keep the knees bent, push off the back legand you have added another 30%................................ starts to add up eh?

Huh !!! I teach Wado-ryu. I know loads of people that do Wado. Next to Shotokan it is extremely popular - at least in the UK. Not so sad... :D :D :D

Yes it does. Those are impressive percentages!
