I would like to suggest an interesting video tape. Its called Essential Karate, and features Chris Thompson of the U.K.. Although I do not practice their system of karate. Which I believe is J.K.A.. The tape was very informative, and even educational. The only area I disagreed with. Was the muscle stretching sections, or at least parts of it. They did an awful lot of bouncing in their demonstrations, and from what I've learned of stretching. Bouncing is a bad,bad thing to do to your muscles while warming up. Am I misinformed in this regard? Anywho the tape content overall was enjoyable. Anyone who appreciates good karate should enjoy this tape.

Thanks for the tip on the video I'll have to check it out.
As to your point about Bouncing or 'ballistic' stretching. You are right it is no longer a recommended method of stretching.
The continuous short jerking or bouncing movement used in this form of stretching only results in bringing into operation the stretch reflex, thus inhibiting any increase in stretch.

Hi
When I started shotokan (all that time ago! ;) ). I had found Kanazawas videos very useful namely the one with all 26 kata on it. Also, Kawasoe Beginner to Blackbelt (Volumes 1-4) and Masao Kagawa. Reference pressure points; I have only looked at Simon Oliver so far, noisy but good! Most of these were sourced from magazines, but I'm not sure if I'm supposed to say which one (?) - If anyone wants details your welcome to email me direct.

Thank you Cooler I wasn't sure...:)
I would strongly recommend you get Shotokan Karate Magazine (from your local retailers) and they also have this magazine on the net. Hope this helps.

If anyone knows of any good resources for kata bunkai out there please let me know. I'm especially interested in the Heian/Pinan katas and the Tekki katas.

Hiya! Just a quick reminder - we sign at least our first name at the bottom of the posts in this forum.
There are a lot of resources out there - as I am still very much in the learning phase of my MA career, I have been advised of one particularly good site from a friend of mine at the following URL:

Hope it helps...

Dr Elmar Schmeisser is a very good resource on kata bunkai. He has written a very interesting book on the Tekki katas.
A bonus is that Dr Schmeisser is on the net quite a bit. I have spoken to him on chat rooms and forums around the net. He is very approachable.

Try the book Bunkia Jutsu by Ian Abernethy, it will help you to find your own realistic applications. I enjoyed the Dagon Society UKs Heian Kata bunkia video.

I did a bit of a search and dug up this thread. Sorry if this response is a little late but I would just like to take a moment to mention that Dr. Elmar Schmeisser has indeed put out a new publication on the Channan kata entitled Channan: Heart of the Heians. For those of you who are specifically interested in this, or even those of you who are familiar with the Pinan and Heian kata and would like to see more where they come from, please check out this very interesting publication:

Interesting, I remember reading about channan kata online sometime before and whether Itosu created pinan or perhaps developed them from channan. I'd always thought the explanation he created them by reference to kusanku, bassai etc., reasonable enough from looking at them! Is there a link online somewhere to what channan looks like, embusen etc.?

Rob,
Sorry, but the Channan embusen is not easily found on-line, or anywhere for that matter. Interested readers are just going to have to get the book, or you can also check out the video that Dr. Schmeisser put togethere with Tony Annesi, which is also very interesting. I reviewed that material as well. You can read about it, and then follow the links at the bottom of the review to contact Bushido-Kai yourself directly.
