Has the whole world gone insane? Kill Bill.... I want to kill Tarantino now. I almost walk out in the first 10 min of the show. Just about everything in this movie is all wrong, the story, characters, dialogs, actions, weird mix with 1/5 anime, and 1/5 black/white. I hated the 1 min close up with Lucy Lu, cant stand her. I will give Tarantino credit. There are some very beautiful and interesting shots from a cinematography standpoint.

This being said, Kill Bill was extremely violent with no point. I am no prude and if violence is necessary to tell a story, fine. However, as a viewer I had absolutely no emotional investment in any of the characters. I could have cared less what happened to any of them. So, Kill Bill was an hour and forty-five minutes of squirting blood and senseless violence.

I do believe that there is something seriously wrong with our society if we view this as entertainment. The Romans loved to go to the Coliseum to watch the gladiators kill each other and various wild animals. We view this as barbaric. However, we pay $8.00 a piece to see this same gory display on screen. To each is own I suppose.

If you like gory meaningless violence you will love Kill Bill. If you desire a story, with action that actually make sense in which you are invested as a viewer, save your money.

no way, that movie was excellent, treading the fine line between utterly insane parody of itself, and stylish to the point of almost being pulp fiction with near perfection. i found myself laughing through most of the film, except during the anime bit, which was actually sad.

Lol. Well fine, instead of saying it was pulp fiction. Why dont you tell me what was so great about this movie? None of it make sense. The only thing I like in this movies is the japanese actress Chiaki Kuriyama. I'm always a fan of her movie.

that's the point! none of it made sense! it's like they took a mediocre plot...turn it into a crappy idea for a film...and then create a freaking piece of art.

don't get me wrong, nothing about that film was tasteful, but it was taken to such an extreme that it makes it hilarious. and then the fight scenes were amazing, especially after the boring crapfest that were matrix:reloaded fight scenese

I found the movie interesting. I could have done without all the music playing during the fight scenes.

I like the fact that the movie was like the classic martial arts movies as far as the blood shooting all over the place.

I also liked the fact that some well known martial artists were also in the movie such as Gordin Lou, A.K.A -Masterkiller( 36 Chambers of Shaolin).

The movie has its ups and downs... I will see the second part when it comes out.

His one of the villan that protect Lucy Lui, I can recognize his bald head through the kato mask. :D Too bad he didnt do much at all, what a complete waste of talent. I much rather see him do a longer fight then watching Lucy Lui. I almost slept through that fight.

i thought it sucked prety bad. it was just so boring. they could have compressed it to about 45 mins. the animae part was just a waste. some of the fights were pretty good. but there was a lot of the charcters just looking at each other. why do people think tarantino is so brilliant? one good movie out of four isn't exactly a winning percentage.

totality
15-Oct-2003, 12:22 AM
because his films are brilliant, only bible beaters, soccer moms, and the clinically depressed would disagree! fool...:D

and the anime part was necessary, do you honestly believe they could've showed that??? that would've been pushing into the nc-17, range...and the fight scenes were brilliant compared to most of the crap we get in America...and probably everwhere else!

p.s. there weren't that many hot chicks, gogo was ok, but has a large nose...uma thurmond(?) is disgustingly skinny, but i do think lucy liu is fairly attractive.

Im looking forward to watching it now. I know on the first page I said it wasnt even going to waste my time but I have since found out what the hell the movies about and heard a lot about and it sounds good. I also heard that the anime/black&white scenes arent in the Japenese version. They said those are censors to make the violence not so violent. Question for the Non-Amercian MAPers... If you have seen Kill Bill is the movie anime and black&white too?? They only mentioned the Japenese not having it but I wouldnt too see if maybe your version was with out it too. Anyway Im going and get to the movies to watch it soon.

totality
16-Oct-2003, 02:30 AM
ehh, the anime scene probably doesn't do a whole hell of a lot for japanese culture...i wouldn't really want it either, although i suppose every american movie made is an affront to american culture in some way, but we don't care :)

B (but only coz it's supposed to be a "B Movie", in that genre it's A class).

Man, this film is soooo much fun.

It's an action film for movie geeks, that's it.

If you love HK action, Japanese samurai cinema and trashy 70's/80's revenge flicks then you're in for a treat coz he's mixed all that up and put his stamp on it.

Can't wait to see it again and am looking forward to part two.

How so?

IMO the influences and references are almost entirely filmic, not literary. From trash revenge movies like the "Death Wish" series and "I Spit On Your Grave" to the "Lone Wolf & Cub" flicks it's all about movies. Even the tone goes back to those movies (with plenty of modern tongue-in-cheek black humor and knowing reference thrown in).

On seconds thoughts, and now that I have had time to think about it...

....it was not too bad. I liked it. A bit over the top, yes. But it fitted in well, the script did too.... I said the scrpit was not too great. But it did fit in well.

I've seen it twice since it came out. I loved it. I thought the action was good. The fight scenes, while being terribly unrealistic, were cool. The blood was hilarious. And the dialogue was good. I love Tarantino movies.

A- is my rating.

Wow, saw it tonight. That anime bit was awesome, the action was great, and uma wasn't too bad herself. One of the best films i've ever seen. Tarrantino, you've done it again!

I really liked it.

Its important to realise a lot of the action is "tongue in cheek" for example the over the top "wooshing" noises when the fighters jump through the air.
Saw an interview with Tarrantino and he said it is an homage to 70's kung fu films.

Thinking about it now I really love it.

Think I'll go see it again. lovely stuff

Oh wow, no one mentioned the absolutely kicking soundtrack. I thought that was a definate highlight, apart from the 5,6,7,8's. They sucked.

I give this movie an A.

SK12879
27-Oct-2003, 12:55 PM
I thought the soundtrack rocked too. Trivia...how did the 5,6,7,8's get selected? Tarantino was in a store in Okinawa and heard them on the radio. He asked the clerk if he could buy the cd that they were playing cause he thought that song would fit into the movie well. He said "had the clerk not sold me that cd, the 5,6,7,8's would not have been in the movie and their song wouldn't have been on the soundtrack." Just the kind of break most artists are looking for...

If you are familiar with Kung Fu Theater in the 70's & early 80's and like QT you will love this movie.

the entire theatre cheered and clapped and laughed was great!

I know I'm late replying to this thread but what the heck...

I saw this on a copied DVD and it was as expected.

a) Uma Thurman was good but not great. A lot of her movements were a bit shaky. Whatever happened to actors that actually know MA?

3) Someone mentioned that this film pays homage to all the past revenge pics. But revenge happens to be the primary reason for the violence done by movie protagonists in just about every film. Revenge is a convenient excuse for the hero to indulge in the same violence as the villain, on that his "excuse" make his actions "moral" and this has been used on countless films, from westerns to modern action films. Nothing new here, revenge in this film follows the usual formula.

4) the swordfights are well done, just with the same sick violence that Tarantino loves. Big deal. He does that in all his movies, going for the shock value hoping that it gets attention.

5) if this is a satire on or homage to violent MA flicks, then maybe it does the job. But that's about it. Nothing really groundbreaking and spectacular was done here. The swordfights are long and complicated but I've seen those in a lot of movies as well. Tarantino just made them more bloody, that's all.

I've always considered Tarantino a psuedo art film director who likes to think he's making something unique and special but in the end doesn't. But he had his 15 min. with Pulp Fiction. He can't keep on going back to violence well. Eventually it will dry up. Real talent works regardless of the material. Tarantino can't rise above his love of violence and that make his films so predictable.

I would have wanted to see someone else to a tribute to the 70's MA movies, and not just another gore fest with nothing great to say.

What i find disturbing is that some people actually found this amusing. That scares me, when we (MA people at that!) see violence as amusing.

Acting - C
Cinematography - B
script and dialogue - C
Actions / MA scenes - C

Overall - C-

SK12879

The violence is amusing because it is so unrealistic. If we were watching Faces of Death and thinking that's so cool, there might be a problem.
