ok people, I want to hear your favorite shime-waza technique, from where and why ?

Mine would be tsukkomi-jime (thrust choke) from guard position, it has never failed me... :) It's quite easy to perform from below, and even if your opponent tries to choke you, yours is more effective.Just remember not to keep your arm too straight, otherwise it may be caught to arm-lock.

Mine used to be a cross between juji-jime and tsuki-komi-jime, where I would basically use a gyaku (reverse) juji-jimi grip, but imagine one arm slipping right down to a tsuki-komi-jime pulling arm position and the other arm forming a bar across the throat. I liked it because the natural juji-jime defence doesn't work so well...

Sangaku-Jime.

From where? From just about everywhere.

I have the legs for it :D

Do-jime as well then Yoda? Most people who like one like the other, and I suspect that you don't mind it being against Judo rules.... ;)

Yoda : I thought you were a Jigoku-jime man :D

jigoku jime (hell choke) is a variation of yoko sankaku jime.
here is a picture of it:

hadaka jime while the opponent is lying facedown.:) another faves are the juji jime and kataha jime. Im not into chokes. im more of a hold-down/armbar guy. :)

My fav when grappling is Kata Juji, from the rear & standing is Kataha w/ rear takedown & Hadaka Jime San ( reinforced sleeper choke), as a follow up to a forward throw is Tatsumaki Jime which I don't think has a Judo equiv.

How do you practice Jigoku? For our system it is Ko Garuma Jime & practice it in defense to an attacker shooting in to grab your legs w/ both arms.

Ryote Jime, Kata ha Jime and Hadaka Jime. Ryote's good because not alot of people are prepared for it. You need a Jacket for it to work though Dave! ;)

Isn't it possible to do ryote-jime without jacket, just by applying the pressure to the arteries with your knuckles?

Probably, but I imagine it would then be quite weak unless you managed to tie up their arms some other way first.

If you want reallistc choking technique check out the book by my master, Joseph Kelljchian entittled "Classical Chokes".

What makes you think the ones we're discussing aren't realistic? Let me tell you, when they're applied, they certainly feel realistic enough!

I did not mean to imply that the previously mention techniques were no good. In fact I think they are all great. My master's book just adds further to the discipline from a "street perspective"

Ahh, so it's a case of application rather than new technique? Sorry if I came across as snappy.

saikyou

street perspective... so it focuses on "gi-less" grappling?

You can do Ryote Jime without a Gi, but the Gi gives you more purchase making it slightly more effective.

saikyou,
Never did answer your question. But, yes Gi-less chokes would be the main thrust of the book. Bare chokes, finger chokes, bone breaking chokes, and chokes using various weapons.
The thesis of the book (Classical Chokes) is that having the ability to administer chokes is an essential component of your fighting arsenal. In fact a great many of our self defense routines end with a choke of some kind. Like a "finishing move" if I can borrow this term.

whoa whoa whoa, bone breaking CHOKES?? why the hell do you really want to break someone's neck? or are you choking them WHILE you break their other arms with your legs or....telekinesis. sorry, i couldn't resist attacking your error :D. thank you for whoever posted that URL, i've never known/respected judo much until now. very good stuff.

:)

It doesnt mean that you will literally break somebody's bones. It means that if you apply enough pressure, that move will break a bone.

Re: Bone Breaking Chokes
I must apologize. I did not notice when I responded to this forum originaly that it was a Judo forum. I was thinking pure fighting and that is why I made reference to the diferent types of chokes such as bone breaking chokes. Bone breaking chokes are certainly a real option in a life or death situation but not in randori.

saikyou, the rar naked choke in BJJ looks more like a sleeper hold done by pro wrestlers

ok. got it. how do you apply this? my favorite entry is when uke is on all fours. ill hook my legs on his and apply the choke. I also like to attack w/ a waki gatame on this kind of situation.

no need to apologize gojuman. :)

saikyou, the rear naked choke is set up just like a hadaka jime, personally, it deends on the situation and hand positioning which choke you will use between the two

I have been a karateka for some time but jujitsu is relatively new to me. My shihan has put me in several fun chokes and showed me ways out of a few. My favorite so far is jigoku jime because I have not been able to find any way out of it. The only defense seems to be avoiding it entirely.

Hadaka jime definitely. I also like some sleeve chokes.

The triangle choke. If and when the opponent attains full mount and trys to ground and pound you can exchange blows and set the opponent up for the triangle choke.

I always had success with the rear naked choke but I like to further sharpen my skills in applying the triangle choke.

Im so sorry, I ment to say when your opponent is trying to acheive full mount and your in the gaurd. It's actually quite hard to do when the person is trying to take your head off.
