I'm able to open the both links and enjoyed the entertaiment..it makes me smile
In the old day, in one of the Chinese Celebration, they have the theater show for three nights, dancing and martial arts fighting are parts of the show, they were very acrobatic, heavily choreograph, impressive and entertaining. Recently many silat player starting going to this route to promote their system, skills and toughness?
To each is own :)

I never had much interest in learning blade fighting because I know that if I’m ever attacked on the street I won’t be carrying a blade so what is the point in learning something you will never use. I have interest in learning how to disarm an attacker that has a blade because I see that as something useful. Do you think blade skills are useful today and do you carry a blade?

Blade skills are very important....
How could one defend effectively against a blade if he doesn't know how it could be used against him? Besides blade training really sharpens your skills and improves the control over our body.
But blade handling/defense has to be realistic....

Blade skills are useful because even if you don't carry one yourself, you may be able to use a disarmed or dropped one if you are ever misfortunate enough to be attacked.
This can change the course of a confrontation, specially if faced by more than one person.

Salam,
How about the fact that there are a lot of people willing to learn something even though they are not likely to need it. Say, why would someone take up interest in sewing skill although he know he would not likely to sew his own attire?. If you have this attitude in silat, i.e. dismissing something as useless just because it doesn't appear to be necessary, I believe you miss a lot.
To answer your question, city folks don't carry parang or blade on their person everyday, even though this is normal in the villages, where sometimes they wear it on the hips. (Parang is considered everyday object, for woodcutting, clearing undergrowth, meat cleaver etc). Even to use a parang for these reasons you need some level of skill. You might be surprised how easy it is to hurt yourself when handling a heavy sharp object such as a parang. I remember seeing my dad exposed his knee cap (first it was all boney white, then blood seeped out to paint it red) due to mis handling of a parang while trying to crack open a coconut.
Even in the cities, some people here still keep weapons, (parang, sword) under neath their beds or in their vehicle because things happen. Although this does not happen all the time, It is not unusual here for 3-4 people to barge into your house during the night with sharp weapons and clubs trying to rob you and kill you in the process. In some cases, the occupants die, sometimes the robbers die. And also, in the olden days, if you suddenly hit someone with your car in a strange neighborhood, a parang might come in handy before the police arrive at the scene. It's better to be alive in prison rather than die on the spot.
Of course, if you have firearms then that's better, except you have to go through much bother to acquire one.
