RYU's quote in the street fighter series was "YOU MUST DEFEAT SHEN LONG TO STAND A CHANCE! Who the hell is SHEN LONG?
I heard his name mentioned in the dragon ball z series, on japanese animation movies, and even in a couple of japanese movies. Is he famous? Is he a legend? Who is SHEN LONG?!

I think he is the teacher of Ryu murdered by Gouki. Im not sure. I also saw this guy in an issue of EGM. He has a headband, grey long hair, and a grey gi. Unfortunately, it was an April Fools joke. I think those guys just edited the sprites of Ken's animation.

"You must defeat my dragon punch to stand a chance" in later versions. I'm betting shen long has something to do with that.

Actually, Shen Long is a joke from Capcom. People started asking themselves this question when they read it too and Capcom leaked the rumour that by winning the game at the highest difficulty WITHOUT BEING HIT EVEN ONCE! would make you fight Shen Long. People spent a mint in the arcades trying to get ot Shen Long, when there really was no such character. I think he appeared in one of the later SF games, but I haven't played all of them. SF 3 perhaps?

As far as I know, Sheng Long was a fake character created by EGM (or maybe capcom). EGM had a cheat to reach Sheng Long in in SF@ in a mid 90's april issue. It turned out to be a complete hoax, but not before dozens of magazines across the world reprinted the code and people at the arcades spent tons of money trying to reach him. It's also funny to note that the way Shng Long challenges you as described by EGM is the same way Akuma challenges you in SSF2T, by beating Bison senseless then moving on to you. Another thing to note is that When streetfighter alpha was realeased Ken's hair actually looked close to sheng longs (long ponytail).
Playeres once again fell for the gag several years later when Street fighter 3 was new to the arcades. EGM once again included photos (this time much better produced) and a code to reach him and once again players fell for it.
I found an intersting site you might wanna check out regarding this character and his "story."
Sheng Long...Fact, or fiction!? (http://www.devermore.net/surbrook/adaptionsvideogame/sfshen.html)
I remember tons of these kind of secrets as a kid. I remember my friends swearing to me that you could turn Blanka into a boy and even remember spending hours trying to get some made up secret character in Mortal Kombat 2. Thank goodness I don't fall or that nonsense anymore...*Continues to try and find a code that will allow Moloch as aplayable character in MK deadly alliance*

Jackie Chan's chinese name would be Chen Long or Chan Long.
As for the name Shen Long from the game street fighter well i had heard the same rumours too.
In order to fight Shen Long one must defeat all the first set of characters without losing 1 bit of vitality/energy.
Then when they reached the 2bd set of characters (Balrog, Vega, Sagat & Bison) they must do the same but fight within a certain part of the background screen.
As for as Crovax612's opinion i would tend to agree with him although i would find it very difficult if someone did complete the stages without losing any energy.

Jackie Chan was born Chan Kwong-Sang, his nickname which everyone knows him is Sing Long.
Shen Long (according to the Japanese release of the comics) was supposed to be Ryu and Ken's Master, who was then killed by (West)M.Bison (East)Vega. In the West all the last Bosses except for Sagat had their names switched around.
West - - - - - - - - - East
M.Bison - - - - - - - Vega
Balrog - - - - - - - - M.Bison
Vega - - - - - - - - - Balrog
Rumoured of reason why of the change was because of the Boxer character M.Bison was too close to real life character Mike Tyson. This was like a decade ago so my memory may be a bit swissed. :D
At first I thought Shen Long was the name of the Dragon Punch (Ryu-Ken) in Chinese its pronounced Shen Long Kuen.

If Jackie Chan was born "Chan Kwong-Sang" chances are that his name would have changed to "Chan Long" rather than "Sing Long".
The reason i would base this info is for 2 reasons,
1) Everyone in China & HK that i spoke to called him "Chan Long"
2) I doubt he would have given up his Suraname "Chan". If anything he would have adapted Chan Long as a nick name for his experience as a fighter. People may have been calling him "Dragon Chan" aka in chinese as "Chan Long" since he was so good at martial arts.
You will find that chinese are very proud of their surnames. Also that alot of people in China & HK are called by their surnames rather than their first names.
Just my opinion on number 2, but 100% fact on Number 1.

Ok thats cool, but he did not give himself that nickname, it was given to him. When i spoke to him, i had to address him as Chan Sang (Mr Chan). When the Media speaks to him its Jackie, when the press prints him its Sing Long (cantonese - for some reason the Sing is spelt the same as 'City').
I dont even know the name of his son (real name) but he's been dubbed as Siu Long (little dragon).
But you are also correct. He also has the name Long Chan.
Chinese are proud of there names but certain individuals choose to call themselves as something else in respect to someone.
e.g. Yuen Wah, Yuen Biu are not related they chose to name themselves after their master. Jackie himself named himself as Yuan Long or Chan Yuan Long.

What EMG (Electronic Monthly Gamer) issue 178 May 2004 page 57 says, "Fooled You! Our best April Fools' gag: April 1992, EGM #33. EGM's most infamous - and to some readers, most aggravating - April Fools' prank promised to pit Street Fighter II players against series mainstays Ken and Ryu's purported mentor, Sheng Long. We figured some chumps would waste their change trying to fulfill the insanely tough challenge we cooked up, but we never imagined the joke might one day lead to developed Capcom to create the suspiously Sheg Long - look character Akuma."
Got that Sheg Long is NOT real. Never been or will be in a Street Fighter game. Though EMG did update the joke and placed him in scene shoots of Street Fighter III.
