Is it possible for me to gain bodyweight and muscle through home training routines using various weights and a carb/protein diet? Some of my mates go to the gym but its to far from me really.

Simple answer is yes but not at the rate as hitting the iron will give you. Use things like 1 Gal. milk jugs filled with water (8lbs per gal) for curls, shoulder presses, etc. Add the jugs to your lap when doing chair dips for triceps. Hold the jugs in each hand and do lunges. Improvise! Use many jugs in a sheet for upright rows and tricep extensions. Your imagination and creativity is your only limitation for muscle gains. Diet is 80% of the battle.

Like flaming said, you'll need a pullup bar and something to do dips from. You might want to invest in atleast a pair of dumbells, with resonable weights, shouldn't cost you too much.
It's only when you start getting to the point where the weights you have begin to turn too easy for you that working out at home is a bad thing. Then again, we've no idea how much you weigh now, or how often you would train etc. I mean if you're a real skinny guy at maybe 110 lbs you could probably gain muscle from doing any kind of exercies at all while eating properly.

Like the guys on here have already said, you need the basic equipment - ie, simple set of weights, somewhere with enough room to train, etc. And obviously, a good protein and carb diet.
I train in my loft  , I have plenty of room to do everything I need to, can keep all my equipment up and out of the way, and I know that when I go to train, I wont get any distractions or disturbances up there.
All I have at the moment is a set of weights, skipping rope, and an ab trainer. I use Bodyweights mainly, but try to include everything into it. I also have a huge list of my routines, diet, goals etc on the wall in front of me, so that I am ALWAYS looking at it. I find that this helps me alot. :)
