I'm interested in BJJ and want to know if BJJ generally has a ranking like the Kyu/Dan system, if not what are the ranks/belts.

BJJ uses a belt system - belts are earned by both technical knowledge and performance on the mat. The basic structure is...

White
Blue
Purple
Brown
Black

It's quite common for blue belt to take 2-3years. Seems to be one of the few arts where belt colour is a true indication of functional ability.

I have another question, my local BJJ club has two purple belts with 9 years of experience, should I stay away from this school?

Thanks

No - you should run, not walk, and train there.

Purple belt is a VERY capable grade in BJJ.

I wondered about this. How hard is it to get a black belt in BJJ and how long does it normally take a talented guy to achieve?

A talented guy - about 10 years.

What about the average Joe?

Approx. 10 years is the norm for most schools. Yet it can take as long as 15-20 years.

Depends on the students ability to learn as well as the instructors ability to teach.

The average Joe won't get a BB in BJJ

oh man, if there is a school with TWO purple belts you want to train there as soon as you can.

I heard a funny story about the BJJ belt thing. A purple belt opened a school to teach BJJ, and the local karate instructor(a 3rd dan) went to challenge the BJJ teacher. Apparently, the 3rd Dan karateka felt that people like the BJJer were destroying the martial arts for teaching before they were even black belts.

Needless to say, the karate guy got destroyed by the purple BJJer. :p

What ppl need to understand is that a belt in one rank is not the same as another. I've heard of friends achieving 2nd, 3rd degree black belts in other arts in as little as 3 yrs. I've been doing BJJ for that same amount of time and I'm still a white belt!!!

makes you think does'nt it. So don't go around challenging BJJ blue belts please!

i don't want this to turn into a BJJ vs other martial arts thing. I was just pointing out the belt differences. thanks.
