I have started training in mantis kung fu, I'm thinking about doing ninjutsu. Any ideas about Pro's and Cons of each style ?
I would do both but the kung fu school does not allow you to train with other schools

Hmm...
What are you hoping to gain form your MA training? What style of Ninjitsu is it?
Thanx

What do you mean they don't let you.....how can they stop you??
seems a bit restrictive.
have you tried ninjitsu before.?
if it were me i'd leave the kung-fu school....nothing against it personally but any establishment that restricts a persons growth by controlling their actions can't be a good thing.
regards.

It's the Bujinkan Dojo
Soke Masaaki Hatsumi
I have not done any Ninjutsu before. They are teaching chi kung and stuff with the kung fu which i like, however there is not usually a teacher there seems to be senior students doing most of the teaching which seems a bit dodgy

hi there,
i find it very hard to believe that there are still MA schools that have problems about students learning elsewhere aswell. Most of the schools I know actively encourage it! Unless they can give you a really good reason why they don't want you to train with another school I'd be a little suspicious of that club. Also who said that they don't like it? Was it the instructor, some of the other students, or just the impression you got from the class?
IMHO the quality of the instructor is more important than the art they teach, especially when you just start training. Untimately I think you should try both and go where you are most comfortable.
all the best,
Colin

Yeah
I will try both.
The restrictions set by the kung fu school are putting me off though. They even threatened me with martial action if I show anyone else what they teach there !

WHAT????? What's martial action? are they going to kick your ass?
If that's their mentality I suggest you do yourself a favour and don't bother going back there. What century do these people think their living in? Do they really think they can offer anything you can't get in any good MA club?
I don't know whether their attitude smacks of arrogance or ignorance? Lots of clubs offer the stuff you enjoyed from the mantis (chi gung etc, as you said) without the crap. Unless you live in the middle of nowhere you should have no problem finding another kung fu school aswell as ninjutsu

Personally I would leave anyone who tries to tell me where I can and cannot train. That is purely commercialization and sounds as if they are worried that you can learn better elsewhere. I have some experience with the Bujinkan system and like it myself.

Thanks for the advise. Any comments on the relative merits of these systems ?

The Bujinkan system is combative. Not what I would say is something to take for exercise but definitely for defense purposes. Kung Fu of any kind I've not been very seriously exposed to so I can't really comment much on it, but I train Bujinkan and enjoy it. I find it more effective than most other things I have been involved in.
