View Full Version : MAP Meet in the Southern US

I'm interested in the possibility of organizing a MAP meet here in the south sometime in the next year (ideally here in Athens as the University of Georgia has great facilities for something like this). I'm curious as to who would be interested in this. If I see enough of an interest I'll see about getting the ball rolling.

Also, the time period I'd probably be looking at would be next spring some time. That would allow for plenty of planning time, and enough notice for people to mark it in their schedules. PM me if you'd be interested in helping to organize this.

A good possibility as I travel to the south quite often. Huntsville, Alabama and just outside Atlanta fairly often.

Hey, I'm right in the middle of the east coast. Atlanta is just as close for me as NYC.
Depending on exact date and schedule, count me in!
Wolf

Awesome. If we get enough interest I'll check with the hotels here in Athens and see about getting a group rate. Lodging down here is pretty reasonable. Also, another reason to do it next spring as opposed to fall would be that we do not, I repeat do NOT, want to have to deal with the UGA football crowd. The town is nuts during football weekends.

If my wife would let me go I'd love to attend! Is this for adults only or are the little ones allowed to attend? Hey Capt Ann, you have to bring either the crabs or the crab cakes! I will bring the sunshine! :D

I just came up with this idea yesterday :D, so I haven't really thought about whether it would be for adults only, or children allowed. I guess it depends on if I can line up instructors willing to do kids seminars. Here are my preliminary ideas for the meet:
When: Spring '07
Where: Unversity of Georgia, Ramsey Student Center for Physical Activities
How Much: $20 at the door (maybe less for early registration)
Charity: Child's Play (http://www.childsplaycharity.org/)

If its in ATL then I'll fly in for that. I fly for free so hell yeah!
I love ATL airport :)
Wolf

It would most likely be in Athens. However, there is an airport shuttle that runs from Atlanta to Athens. (Athens is about 70 miles east and a bit north of atlanta).

Pero yo soy uno gringo americano. No cocino nada gue es Cubano. Solamente Argentino! I hope I can still write well in Spanish (it has been over 24 years). I would love to bring all of that to the meet but I doubt they would allow me to cross into Georgia with it. You know how tough borders are to cross these days!

Atlanta is probably a better choice than Athens unless someone can get free meeting space. Orlando is also a very good spot.
I would love to see people at a meet.
Wolf
10-May-2006, 10:20 PM
My suggestion for athens was because that's where I am, and that's what I know. Trying to set something up in Atlanta would be difficult for me. Also, the University of Georgia has great facilities for something like this. That was the other reason. If people fly into Atlanta there is a shuttle that runs here to Athens, and if we have enough people we may be able to see about a charter service. The lodging is very reasonable here as well, and the cost of restaurants, and other necessities is much cheaper. If Atlanta is the concensus though I'll see what I can do about finding a location there.

Like I said earlier, Athens works for me. My mom lives in Commerce and has a business in Athens. It's not that far a drive from Atlanta, I do it every time I'm in Atlanta for work. Which isn't as often as I'd like but a few times a year. Heck, enough notice and I may be able to get to Atlanta for work before and after and therefore fly in on the company dime. If not, be a great excuse to being the wife and daughter to Commerce to visit "Grandma".
Also, been thinking of doing the same in Houston. Maybe I'll let you be the guinea pig first.

Pffft yeah right... Someone says Dallas.. everyone bitches because its 6 hours from San Antonio. or 3 and some change to houston/austin.
Or vice versa. Texas is crap for meetups simply because we don't measure distance in miles.. we do it in minutes.. and thats alot of minutes to get thrown around :)
Oh.. and Yohan.. that bucket better not break down in an attempt to run my ass over.. Or we're going to have words man.. Long drawn out irate words. :) :) :) So I'm stoked for this thing.. too bad its a year off :(

There isn't much to really do out in West Texas though. I mean if tippin cows and drinkin Shiner Bock is your kinda thing, then geographically you're in the right place at the right time.. But I need a balance of big city living and the ability to get out to the country in 30 minutes tops. I've got two cities to pick from in 30 minutes distance from each other.. Actually 10 minutes to Fort worth and 20 dallas from where I live, and the country is 20 minutes north or south.

Depends what you mean by "Southern" jmd! So folks think Carolina (yea we will throw Georgia in there with NC and SC) BBQ (vinegar base not tomato base) is not Southern. I am originally from DC and used to think that BBQ meant sticky red fingers. Having lived in the South for the las 10 years I want Southern BBQ! Vinegar based with no sticky fingers! I can do the hush puppies, slaw, tater salad, etc too! Of course all of this would require more $$! Yummy!

Don't forget there's Memphis BBQ too. That's all dry spice rub on the ribs. Then you add the sauce if you want it. There are a number of really good bbq places around athens though. When things look like they're coming together I'll see what it would cost to have them cater a meal.

What will we actually DO at the MAP meet? I have some ideas about what I'd like to see/do:
Different forms of sparring: with equipment, without equipment, limited equipment, striking only, grappling only, striking AND grappling, limited and unlimited strike zones, continuous spar, hard contact to non-critical zones/light to contact to critical zones, foam weapon sparring, sport stick sparring, close range knife using chalk or markers, dog brothers style stick sparring, etc.
Sensitivity drilling in the different arts: tai chi tui shou/pushing hands, wing chun chi sao, various grappling two man drilling (fishing for underhooks, etc), etc.
Conditioning for the different arts: 3 star/9 star forearm banging for CMAs, makiwara boards for karatekas, iron palm demonstrations, seminars on conditioning the shins for muay thai guys, breaking boards/bricks/trees/people, etc.
Weight training: with machines, with free weights, proper methodology, training for bulk, training for endurance, safety
Cardiovascular training: kinds of shoes, running on the street, running on equipment/machines, safety, cardio for grappling, cardio for striking, differences between sprinting and marathon cardio, etc.
Martial arts vendors: local, online, demonstrations.
Seminars, seminars and more seminars.
What do you guys think? Of course, all of this will have to be supervised and subject to the final decision of the guy holding the event. I'd like to see EVERYONE who goes to the event be at least able to walk out under their own power. :)

I'd love to see a lot of that stuff. I'd especially love to do some sparring and rolling and playing with weapons (as I don't know much about weapons), but I think we are somewhat restricted as to what we'll be able to do at the meet due to liability reasons. However, I'm down to get out in a feild or whatever and have some fun.
Me and TDJ are going to have a go at it some and you'd be welcome to play as well as long as we can train before hand and we can make sure everyone is on the same page so no one gets hurt.
Really, I'm down for anything. I'm not so worried about conditioning as I get it in training every week, but I'll be happy to demonstrate some conditioning drills from Wuzu.

Hey, I would be interested in going to a MAP meet in the south. I'm in North Central Florida so Georgia isn't too bad of a drive. Only about 120$ in gas to get where I need to go : P. But I was wondering what kind of things go on at a MAP meet? Is there a lot of fighting that goes on? How are they organized and is there anything I can do to help out? I should be able to get time off from everything in the spring, and would love to meet new people who are into MA and fight with them.
Heck, in the next few years when I get my life and ambitions in line and am attending the University of Florida, maybe I can help get a MAP meet started in Florida eh?

Spring eh? I could possibly attend by that point in time. Great idea. And I'm all for sparring with various people. I guess I'll be bringing my equipment with me too. The whole LAN thing was sarcasm for a joke I had running a month back or so. If sparring is going to be a part of this, I'll post a list of required equipment for participation, and what kind of sparring it will be. I may see if I can get someone to bring extra equipment.
Right now, here's the types of friendly sparring I see happening along with the seminars going on:
Kickboxing/MT rules (Boxing/MT gloves and Thai shin/instep guards)
grappling/submission/bjj (no equipment required)
MMA (MMA gloves, preferably 6oz training and optional shin/instep guards).
Contact for striking will be at the discretion of participants (no full contact).

Does it cost money to go to these MAP meets?
KickChick
03-Aug-2006, 02:17 AM
yes... but it's a very nominal fee.
The NYC Meet entry fee was 20.00 which included a t-shirt (if you pre-registered).
Monies go to rental of venue and the rest to charity

None of the money goes to MAP?! That would e a great way to get some money for the site. Do you guys ever set aside a seperate donation thing for supporting MAP?

... usually we do not do a separate donation for supporting MAP. Although I did have the necessary information on how to become a MAP Supporter written within the NYC MAP Meet event program.

Ok folks, I'm sorry to say that I do not, nor will I have the time to make this happen. Grad school combined with work and training and a marriage just doesn't allow me the time to set this up. If someone else wants to take over plans for this, by all means go ahead.

I would be glad to organize this event, if we could move it to Nashville. I have access to a large enough facility I believe, and I work in the event industry so I have some experience in this.
Let me know if this is of interest.

Nashville would be C00L - I haven't been there since 2001 - stayed at Opryland hotel - BIG MISTAKE - but visiting the Grand Ole Opry was GREAT!!!!
So as long as I can combine a visit to hit and pummel complete strangers with a visit to get my fix of Country & Western music - I could well be a player :) :) :)
All the best.

Ok, seems like there's some interest. I'll contact the Meetup Coordinator (who's name escapes me at the moment... :bang: ).
Also according to the MAP Meet Guidelines:
Initial draft
The person wishing to set up and organise a MAP Meet must contact a MAP Administrator with a draft proposal for the event comprising of...
- Approximately When the event will take place
- Where the event will take place
- An outline plan of the event
- How the event will be funded if costs are incured and which charity will benefit if the event makes a profit.
Organisation and Mentoring
All MAP meets must be "Mentored" by MAP senior staff member (Administrator or Global Moderator) who will oversee the organisation of the event and ensure that the event is organised in accordance with the MAP Community Purpose.
So looks like I need to start writing my draft. :)

I'm looking for people who may have an interest in instructing at the MAP Meet in Nashville. No date has been set yet, but we're tentatively looking at late Feb. or early March '07.
Of course I'd like to have instructors in the biggies, but I'd also really like to find some of the more you might say "exotic", arts that us MAPpers practice, that we might otherwise not get to see.
If you have an interest in instructing, please PM me, or post it here. Thanks!

Southern MAP Meet Update
:D Good news! We have definately secured our location, just have to pin down the best date. We will be in downtown Nashville, in the heart of the city, convenient to hotels and restuarants for those who are staying over. :D
This is a great facility for this event. We have a full size basketball court, a smaller room with padded floor, and a break room with tables and vending that we can use. We also have Men's and Women's locker rooms.
We're going to have some fun and learn new things, while raising money for the American Cancer Society. It's Win-Win-Win, in my book.
I'm looking for people interested in teaching a class, please PM me or email me via my website http://www.tkd-sparring.com. (TOS prevents me from putting my email address in this post - sorry :( )
Start making your plans now for this event, it will be end of Feb. / beginning of March, and I hope to have the date nailed down by this time next week!

I have set up a web page (http://www.tkd-sparring.com/MAP) for anyone wishing to either be a sponsor, or an instructor to leave contact info.
Also there is info about the Rec center and area lodging. This will all be updated very soon, as more things come into place. :D

Well we haven't exactly been overwhelmed with support for this event/date. Let me put it to the community, would you rather see this later, in the Spring?
[ ] March?
[ ] April ?
[ ] May?
[ ] Keep it Feb. 24th, I'll be there!
If there's substantial support for a later date, I'll drop back and re-schedule. Post your answers below please!

Ok, I have to say that support for this event recently has been truly under-whelming. In my last post, 11 days ago, I asked if a better date would help, but nobody has replied. That makes me think it's not a date issue, but a lack of interest issue.
Seriously, if people aren't interested in pursuing this it's ok by me, and I'll cancel my reservation for the hall.
I'd really like some feedback on this. Thanks.
well, I'm marginally interested...but I would want more info, I guess. As in hotel details, events planned, etc..
If it falls through, next time I drive through there we could go get snookered and call it a MAP meet, right?

By sticking to a date you'll find more people can confirm if they can make it. Others can arrange holiday before it all gets booked up and others will just have to say no.
Remember - you could also promote this to local clubs (flyers) or to some of your friends by email - who will notify others. You can promote at the venue too - or local university or college. This has the opportunity to get a lot bigger if you can plug it a bit more :)
Don't lose heart just yet mate - this is simply the first hurdle! Next you need to confirm the date with the venue before someone else books it - then find instructors - you can't get instructors until you have a date. Now stick to a date and it will just have to move on from there. :)

I'm very sorry to have to announce that I must withdraw from the MAP Southern US meet as coordinator.
The reasons are numerous and involve my new job, my family, our TKD school, the national org, etc., but suffice it to say I cannot devote the time to this project it needs, nor can I at this point even promise I'll be in Nashville on that date.
If anyone would like to take this over, and keep the same facility, PM or email me, for a link to my email go to http://www.tkd-sparring.com( posting emails is a violation of the TOS).
Again, I'm extremely sorry to have to pull out of this, I hope that someone can take it over and pull it off.

No apology necessary, kwang gae!
You have taken a lot more initiative and put in a lot more effort than the rest of us, who have been wanting to have another MAP Meet, but have been unable to do anything at all about it.
Best wishes with success in the new job, and in your school situation. I am sure it will work out well, and I hope that perhaps there will be southern MAP Meet in your future.
