passed my yellow belt test today. it whent really well he didnt have to ask me to redo anything. i was nervus before class as i always am when belt testing, but once the test got started i was fine. ive found hapkido to be a lot harder than TKD so even getting a yellow belt is a nice accomplishment. my goal is to be green by the end of the year

Can someone please answer this question? Why god why do people tell us about their yellow belt tests. I could understand telling us about your black belt tests if you really wanted to. But it's just a yellow belt. It's not an accomplishment.

a****** it feels good to pass no matter what rank, any new belt is an accomplishment.
Cesar

No not every belt is an accomplishment. You can say a black belt is an accomplishment but not a yellow belt. Yellow belt is a very low rank. Okay to be fair I would say a brown belt would be acceptable. Cause you're almost to black belt.
Cesar

I even know people who would say a black belt doesn't mean jack.
Cosmo Kramer

just because people say it does not mean its accurate. and a yellow belt is a low rank, but higher than the previous rank, it shows improvment and that you deserve to move up.

Big congrats on your yellow belt. It's nice to see students who are excited about their accomplishments and their motivation to do more and more. A yellow belt represents a significant era in a student's path, being recognized as having some basic skills and not being a complete beginner anymore. For an instructor it symbolizes that now on top of hammering basics, we can start adding new ideas and techniques and concepts and pushing for an even tougher level.
I wish you the best in your training and look forward to hearing of your accomplishments! :)

Getting a belt is like the least important thing in martial arts. People's enthusiasms for belts is one of the reason Mcdojo's make so much money. Belts might also give people a false since of accomplishment. Thomas this post to me tells me that this person isn't totally competent at their martial art. I'm saying getting belts shouldn't be your goal.

Okay, sure. But if a student like the original poster wants to post about their accomplishments, what's the sense of hitting them with a bunch of negativity? If you do a search for Cosmo Kramer's posts on this board, you will see that it is a student who asks questions, trains hard, and is always wiling to positively discuss that which will make him a better student.
By the way, I took a quick look through your 100+ posts (over 11/day) but didn't see anything mentioning what you study, how long you've been studying, or even anything really related to the martial arts.
Do you train in the martial arts and what do you train in?

I'm not critcising if he is a good student or not. I'm criticising that he and other people are making threads about low level accomplishments. You're right he doesn't deserve negative or positive comments. Actually people should just ignore posts like this.
This is a martial arts forum. I'm not trying to be smart or anything. Look harder. I proabably talked about myself before.

So why did you crawl out of your hole and belittle this person's achievement??

I have and you haven't!! The vast majority of your quotes have been derogatory, rude, sacastic, ill founded and with no respect to the individuals that originated the post or the persons who have posted on them at all.
If you have nothing positive to say then do us all a favour.........
Please answer Thomas' question.....Have you had any MA training or experience?? And that does not include watching DVDs or playing video games!! Have you trained in Hapkido??
If not then what right have you got to sit in judgement of someone who has bothered to get of their rear, train hard for 3 - 12 months, go to a grading and face a grading panel of senior instructors and pass!!!
You obviously have no concept of the effort, blood sweat and tears that has gone into this result otherwise you would not be make such throw away comments.

:) Well Done for getting your Yellow Belt.:)
Was this your first grading in Hapkido or did you have to take yellow tab/tag first?
Thought I dislike to numerous belts and agree that a belt is only symbolic...I too like to see myself progress. A white belt represents commitment to moving forward and willingness to train; a yellow can be said to represent action in the words of having said "I plan to train".
Congrads and keep going.
Just curious, where do you practice? I did Hapkido in Manhattan and found it very interesting.

Yellow is my next grading I expect to pass in about 2 months.
The color yellow represents the rising sun and the beginnings of a new awakening. Thus it's not an accomplishement per say, but certainly cause for excitement.
Congratulations. I hope you will be able to keep your passion alive.

Congrats on the Yellow Belt...Somebody famous once said, "Every journey begins with the first step." And that is what a Hapkido Yellow Belt represents-the first step in your Hapkido journey. By the way, when the Master of the school I study Hapkido at presents a student with his Black Belt he says, "Congratulations on earning your Black Belt...you now know enough to begin to learn Hapkido." Keep working and keep us posted on your progress...See ya 'round the dojo...

I passed my Yellow last night..It was a long test- I had to go through all i learned from White through now..Not to mention before the 3 of us tested..They ran us to death with running around-jumping jacks-push ups-sit ups-leg lifts-and a bunch of other stuff.. So when i started to test i was wore out. I was happy with the way I tested..I wasnt asked to repeat a thing.(thats good right?)..I'm still tired- lol..I did it- I'm now a Yellow-Purple--I know some of u wanted to know.. Thank U--

Going from a 2nd dan in TKD to a white belt in Combat Hapkido is a "positive" humbling experience and allows me to look down and remember I have a long way to go. I would agree from a pragmatic stand point moving to yellow is symbolic yet the concept of achieving short term goals (yellow) while yearning for long term goals (black) plays a significant part in understanding the commitment and dedication one must take in order to gain wisdom. For me I can't get enough of it and turn to teaching my youngest (white belt in TKD) the finer points of chon ji when everyone else goes home.
Congratulations on your accomplishment and remember take the time every now and then to forget what car you are in long enough to roll the windows down and enjoy the ride.

Congrats to both Cosmo Kramer & Hapkido 7 for passing Yellow, do not allow small minded people to disrespect your acheivements, there sould be no easy ride in this business, there are no easy belts, the first is as important as the last, you can never stop learning, every belt has to have a respectability, or whats the point of including it in a sylabus, you learn very important things in the beginning that is and will always be the foundation of what you become as a martial artist.
I too am going through the humbling process the same way as Stepdot, I come from long Shotokan Karate background and have happily jumped over onto the very bottom rung of the Hapkido ladder gladly and have learned very valuable lessons at each grade.... by the way , wish me luck as I am about to grade for Blue belt on April 7th with GM Fred Adams in the UK

Hey, in our school, i was told that there are only 2 grades where you are COMPULSARILY tested on everything in the syllabus that you know. (Other grades you are tested on a random slection of material, all of it would take forever i guess)
Yellow, because all you know are white belt material, and black, since you have to demonstrate you know everything.
By that reconing, i guess that makes yellow and black the most important grades in our classes!!!
Anyway, on a serious note, i remember when i joined hapkido. I'd done TKD, Judo for a while and various other arts along the way too. I thought the grading for yellow was SOOOO difficult.
Reason?
I didn't know anything, so it was totally new, alien, and i really did feel like a beginner! it was really difficult.
Every grade since then has felt slightly easier in a way, because i had gained knowledge previously to base my newer learning on!
Yellow belt material might be 'simple' and easy for someone who is higher up, but not for a beginner.
Good accomplishment guys, just keep going, and you'll be amazed by how much you can learn in hapkido.
PS: I'm taking a blue to purple belt grading on Monday coming. Testing includes techniques against chokes, a long staff weapon form, my second nunchuks weapon form, and self defence using a rope, aswell as any previous material. Been practising hard for an hour or so every night.

Congratulations on your acomplishment, and yes, getting to yellow belt is an acomplishment. Many people never walk through the door and start.
I'm not a big fan of belts either, but they do represent that you learned a specific body of knowledge and are ready to start learning more. This varies from curiculum to curiculum and that is why belts do not matter much. A belt in one art or school does not equal a belt in another art or school. It does show that you have learned the requirements for your school, and that IS an acomplishment that you should be proud of attaining.
I know Jere H. and have trained with him a couple times down in Jackson, Mississippi. Good man and good instructor. Keep up the good work and learn a lot from him, he has a lot to teach.
Yours in Training,
Alain
