All I know is that it is a korean style, I think it is some what related to taekwando, but I believe hwarang do has more hand tecniques. I've seen some of it done before....I think it's pertty cool, but some one who knows more would have to let you know what they think.

Hwa Rang Do is an exellent style, especially if your teacher teaches with the sword.

It was one of mychoices for sword but I turned it down because it was to far away. Good luck to you for training.

Hello; DraKeN

I know a few guys that do Hwa Rang Do and they can take care of themselves. The system is good w/ full contact sparring, weapons, & grappling along w/ all the stuff that you would expect from a TKD school. The system gets a bad rap due to some of the founders claims, but the local school here has turned out some very good MA's who take about 50% of the top trophies at the local Karate tourneys.

Take Care;

Hwa Rang Do looks like an all around type of style. As far as effectiveness goes, it is all up to the individual, as well as the instruction they receive. That goes for any art as well:cool: .

it would work easy on street.

sorry, but i have to say that NO style WORKS on the street...

a fight is unpredictible, no training will change that, experience will help, but you dont get that in a dojo.

if your instructor is good then he will try and prepare you for real life situations, but there is no style that will be a forcefeild on the street.

dont get me wrong, styles are helpful in real life, but i dont think you can term one so definately, if its a good style it might help you. best street martial art? sprinting!

A lot of HWD does have a lot of TKD in it. Just like it has a lot of TSD in it. Thats mainly because they are all Korean. From what i hear they do use a lot more hand that TKD does but still uses a lot of foot work. If that sounds like what you are interested in go to the school and check it out.

hi

i train in hwarangdo - not sure about the hwarangdo in the u.s, but here it's under WTF - so you can compete in the olympics if you're that way inclined.

what we learn in hwarangdo here (australia) is pretty much what people have already posted.

yes, because it is based on korean martial arts (taekwondo in particular), you will see similarities to many TKD schools around the place, but some of the techniques are executed differently - for example, when i was doing moo duk kwan, a roundhouse kick would start by lifting the knee up from the side of your body, then turning your hips with your foot now travelling on a horizontal plane and striking with the ball of your foot.

here, we lift the knee straight up and a little past our body's centre line, then turn our hips and kick on a horizontal plane with the instep (top of foot - for tournaments) and the ball (for breaking, we can break with the instep too

as always, techniques amongst all TKD styles will vary to some degree...

things we learn include: HRD techniques (poomsae and breaking included); tournament free sparring (for points); self defence free sparing (for real life); there is a lot of practice done on joint locks and breaks; weapons training - knives, swords, short stick, long stick, nanchaku, belt, etc; grappling and throwing; pressure points.

we do real life scenarios too, for example if you're attacked by a group of people. there's a lot of jumping, sliding, breakfalling rolling techniques too

hope this helps, let me know if you need more info
gotta get back to work...
