To be honest...
The small sampling of the CAKE CHAT that Chimp has posted here is tame by comparison to the ribald banter that endears us so to CAKE CHAT.
Don't miss it folks...

This is exactly the sorts of things we can discuss in cake chat. Cake philosophy... When is a cake not a cake? What is the sound of one cake being eaten? If a cake fell over in the fridge and noone was around would it make a noise?
Exellent, cake chat don't forget, most nights from about 7pm BST till late
*Note: Do not take part in more than one chat per 24 hour period, please seek medical advice if you take more chat than intended or if it comes into contact with your eyes, always read the label.

Anyway, here are some cake facts, courtesy of Wikipedia, for all you cake lovers out there:
# The most expensive cake ever made was the Diamond Fruit Cake, a Christmas cake studded with 223 diamonds and put on sale for $1.7 million dollars in Tokyo in 2005.
# The world's biggest ever cake was made in Alabama in 1989, and weighed 58 tons, including 7.35 tons of icing. The world's largest gingerbread man was a puny 168kg by comparison.

Flan is a custard if I am not mistaken. :D
What you call flan we call creme caramel and it is a custard, or flan has a crust, or sponge base, can be sweet like a strawberyy flan or savoury like a cheese and egg flan ( which is like a quiche but straight men can eat it too).
here is a tarte tatin which is a very nice kind of apple flan
http://www.turkishlanguage.co.uk/tt_files/tarte3g.gif
and here is a creme caramel for comparison
http://www.dcthomson.co.uk/mags/post/magazine/images2005/dec05/food_dec05_orange_creme_caramel.jpg
And we say flan with an "ah" sound I have heard Americans say it like "flon" (but I dont think they nescecarily all say it like that"

In the UK, a flan has a sweet base, and a quiche is a pastry base, usually with an egg and cheese filling.

Wow!
Really?! Never had a sweet flan?
I thought that's pretty much the only kind that existed. The Leche Flan of most latin countries is brilliant. Basically an egg custard set in a cup that has a bit of carmelized sugar tipped into it. Though there are many, many regional variations.
In Italy it's known as the Crema Caramella and in France it'd be a Creme Renversee.
The one we do in Asia quite often is make with coconut milk in place of the regular milk. Tasty tasty.
Here's a pic a sweet flan. Very similar to a creme brulee - it's practically the national dish of the Philipines because of the Spanish.

But in British English that is not a flan only in US English, it looks more like a creme caramel or as you say a creme brulee. I have said this before in the thread pay attaention eat some cake your concentration is sliping.

Interesting.
I've no doubt the British English word comes from the original French word that comes from Old French and prior to that Latin. In addition the Spanish, Tagalog, Portugese generally consider a flan to be sweet as opposed to savory - though there are savory flans out there usually in French Provencal cuisine.
The general definition of flan is one that is sweet and not savory.
http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=flan
Generally when a flan migrates towards the savory and away from sweet it becomes quiche. :D
