Has anyone ever heard of the Japanese style shotokan? I used to practice as a child, but then moved to a different town and never continued lessons. I'm going to be starting up lessons fairly soon, however, and was wondering if anyone has heard of this style, and their opinion on it.

uhh no.
no one in this entire Martial Arts forum has heard of the Okinawan style of Karate named Shotokan whos founder is Gichin Funakoshi.
good luck with your training.

In that case I apologize for asking a "stupid question". My interest in martial arts has only recently been revived, and I really have no knowledge on the subject.

Hiya Deadman - we have a whole section on Shotokan on the main forum and look in the articles sectrion for further info too. Check out local clubs and seek to speak to students about their class and get books from Amazon or the library for further info....or just do a search on Google under Shotokan. Welcome back to the world of MA :)

alright, sorry, I'm in kind of a bad mood. I've recently been diagnosed with whooping cough, which can last for 2 to 3 months, so I'm rather irritated...

So you'll be in no mood for anyone to start making smart alec and probably untrue comments about shotokan.

Well, Shotokan is one of the Japanese Styles of Karate; Whilst it's based off the "original" styles, it's not Okinawan. That's the mistake; if you don't believe me, ask around in the karate forum :)

*sigh* - Lets let deadman get to the first class before we start the conversation on origins peeps! :)
Another thing you may have missed as a kid is the politics of MA DM...try not to embroil yourself in this first...have some fun and join in later ;)

Shotokan is Okinawan based and it was brought to Japan later on in its history.
unless you mean the style it was before developed to the name of Shotokan, then you are correct and I am a big idiot.
haha.

It's a good style but with that said an opinion of a style is always dependend up on the experience of the on watcher and his mental state.
If you liked it practice it. If you feel content after practice your are dooing well. A style can never outperform the person using it. With that in mind give your best.

Actually, it is Japanese. You have to remember, even though Funakoshi was Okinawan, and he studied Okinawan systems, he created Shotokan as a system that would be accepted by the Japanese school system and government.
Someone can better explain it than me I'm sure.

The first time I ever heard of Shotokan Karate was Street Fighter...it's the style that Ryu & Co. Use.
...however, I somehow doubt that students of Shotokan Karate are taught to project energy waves from their palms...
...or are they?

It's a big secret, pay me £10,000 and I'll teach you the mystic ways, but first you must stand underneath this tree and catch leaves between your fingers until I deem you ready.:D
£10,000?
I'll show you for £9,995! ;)
