I am pretty new to sparring in my Lau Gar class and I feel quite clumsy & slow in the footwork department. Any tips, drills, tactics or strategies on how to improve?

Try practicing footwork and sparring seperatly for now. Without proper footwork is really hard to catch a moving target. No matter how fast you can throw a punch or kick, without decent footwork those fast punch/kick will become slow punch and kick due to bad footwork. Im sure you learn some basic footwork from your instructor, try putting kick/punch with your footwork instead of just drilling punch/kick in place.

Try asking White Wizard he does Lau Gar too if i remember right. But maybe he can help you a little better since you take the same style.

Practice!

Mainly it is often a fault of beginers that they do not relax when sparing and as a result become more rooted and tire easily. Also relaxing makes you move quicker as you may be tencing up a lot.

Lastly as you are new you may not have a big technique list to use so you will seem more imobile as you have a smaller number of moves to work off hence less movement to do.

Practice is the key and steal other peoples techniques that u get caught with!

I think I am too tense & need to relax more when sparring now that you mention it Sonshu.

Kof, I'll try drilling the footwork separate as I'm probably thinking too much about the tecniques to use my feet properly.

Cheers folks!:D

Hi Stvn,

try not to think about your feet at all.

They're only a means of getting you from one place to another.

Step out to some Motown or James Brown. :D

Stay light, stay mobile.

Got some good footwork drills for you as and when you want em.
