View Full Version : Advice on injury

I'm after some input from other members on an injury. Don't worry, i know the usual - you should really go and see a doctor etc., etc., however i won't be holding anyone responsible – I’m just after some input from you as to what you guys think it could be from your experiences - as i don't NORMALLY get injuries - especially this type.

I normally train hard every day concentrating mainly on flexibility and kicking.

I'm quite flexible - and have been called 'rubber legs' in the past - and this is what has confused me the most.

Everything was going great up until Christmas - at which time i thought my body deserved a break - so i took a week off until the New Year.

I started limbering up again in the New Year preparing myself for going back to my club to train. I started my workout EXACTLY the same as usual - i don't rush into things until my body is warmed up - i performed my stretching routine first (following my warmup), and then followed with kicking. I maintained the same flexibility, nothing was any different in that department, however when i went to kick - i couldn't believe how much pain i was in performing something as easy as a Mawashi Gery (roundhouse).

The pain was razor sharp - it seemed to be coming from my femur - and i was completely shocked as to what had happened.

I can’t recall anything that could have caused this injury – apart from a Christmas Party just before Christmas that I attended. We were all up on the dancefloor doing some strange and physically demanding stuff – as you do when you’ve had a few drinks too many!!, and maybe that could be responsible for the pain I’m now experiencing.

I haven't done any training at all since the New Year - apart from the odd roundhouse every couple of days just to see if its improving. I thought the injury needed some time to heal – but it’s now been about 5 weeks and although things HAVE been improving VERY SLOWLY - it was still too painful to train at a club.

So, over the past week I've been trying to identify the exact area that the pain is coming from. As i said previously it seems to be coming from somewhere around the femur area. At first i was worried that it may be my hip joint - which puzzled me as i'm VERY flexible in the hip joint. So, yesterday i thought i would do an hours stretching and see how things go. This is what happened:-

The stretching went fine, I even did the ‘Frog’ exercise which opens the hips right out – and my groin was right down on the floor with no pain at all during stretching – however when i was sitting on the floor in the box splits, i went to come out of the splits (to a standing position) my pushing my body up using my hands on the floor, and by sliding my legs in, I got the pain again??????? I also get the pain when I hold kicks out in the air, I can normally hold a roundhouse or a side kick out in the air for a minute or so, but at the moment I’m getting this sharp razor pain.

What is strange is after stretching – the roundhouse went absolutely fine – hardly any pain at all – which makes me think it could just be muscular??

Also, since yesterdays stretching, I got up this morning, I haven’t done any stretching as such, all I have done is pulled out a chamber using my hand on my knee, and leaning up against a wall, then went to kick some roundhouses – it doesn’t seem to hurt as much since I’ve done the stretching yesterday.

I’m wondering if I should carry on stretching everyday – or whether it requires more rest???

I seem to be getting better results by stretching rather than resting – as I said I’ve been resting it for about 5 weeks now and its hasn’t improved that greatly – however yesterdays stretch seems to have helped it a lot.

Any ideas anybody as to what it could be???? Do you reckon it’s a joint, tendon, muscle?????? I hope its not arthritis setting in – although if it was I wouldn’t have thought I would be able to do the box splits without any pain?

To give you some idea it feels a little like shin splints! Its a sharp and razor like pain that lasts for a few seconds, but improves with stretchings and kicking?

Mate, soft tissue injuries can take a notoriously long time to heal. Take it from one who knows....year and a half before mine got back to normal. Sometimes time is the only option. I know how frustrating it can be :bang: bones heal quicker

Anyway, 1st things 1st. Don't you think you should go to a Dr. and get it checked out?

Thanks for your reply Gajah :)

I will most probably go to an Osteopath if things don't heal 100% - as i've had a good experience with these guys over the years.

Its kind of strange - as some days it feels like it needs a severe CLICK - whereas other days it feels like a pulled muscle, but i can't exactly pinpoint which one - but yesterday when i kicked it felt like it was the big one near my rear end - but as i say its kind of difficult to identify which one it is.

My biggest worry is my hips knackered - but i think i'm being paranoid here - as i can walk perfectly - can still get into the box splits - and can kick the same (once stretched and warmed up) and i don't think i would be able to do any of these if it was my hip joint!!! I was also worrying about Arthritus - but i suppose i'm being paranoid there also.

Its just so annoying - as i want to get back to training at my club as i feel like i'm missing out on valuable time :bang:

As you felt it 'go', I wouldn't worry about arthritis :)

Also, if you had pulled/tore a ligament or had tendon damage, I doubt you'd be able to do the splits!

Sounds muscular to me but I'm not an expert in these things.

I assumed you felt it happen!

Arthritis wouldn't spontaineously happen.

Oh i see :)

I think i probably mis-worded the original post - what i meant was when i went to do the kicks (in the New Year) i immediately noticed there was something not quite right. I normally start with roundhouses to the knee area first, just to get the legs working, then the stomach area, and then the head. The problem was as soon as i started the low kicks, i felt there was something wrong. So i don't think it was actually a kick that made it happen. Thats why i've been worrying about the old 'Arthritus' - but as i say i'm probably just being paranoid - i'll do a bit of reading up on the net about it i think

But things have DEFINETELY got much better since my Stretch on Friday - i have a child gate at the bottom of my stairs - and since it started in the New Year - even lifting my leg over the stairgate made it hurt - like it needed a good click - but since Friday's stretching - all it feels like is a bit of a pulled muscle - so you are probably right :) It probably is just 'soft tissue damage'.

The last time i remember going through something like this was when i was 18.

Something happened (almost over night really) that made my back freeze up (right between the shoulders) and i couldn't even twist my kneck - it was a nightmare trying to reverse a car - and very painful indeed.

I had that for nearly two years, kept going to the doctors, they kept dishing out anti-inflamatory's, then they sent me to a physio - who had me laying on a ball between my back which didn't do ANYTHING, in the end (after nearly two years of anti-inflamatory tablets from the doctors) i went to a new club, and the instructor had trained in Japan for many years and learnt a lot about the human anatomy, his wife was Japanese, and to cut a long story short - i explained i would like to start at his club once i get my back soughted, he asked what was the problem, i told him, he laid me on the floor face down, and rested his hands on my back, and went all the way down my spine, applying gentle pressure, and made a hell of a clicking noise, he asked me to get up, i got up rather cautiously - as i had done for the 2 years that i was suffering, he asked me how it felt, i twisted my neck and back, it had gone! And this is the honest truth - i really couldn't believe what he had done - it was just like you read about the miracles in the bible - i was speechless! :)

I'm very pleased to report that my injury has now healed 100%!!!!!!!!!! :)

I'm very happy - as i thought it was permanent!

I can't believe how long it has taken - i've rested it almost completely for 3 months! I haven't trained at my club since before Christmas  :bang:

Can't wait now until i return :)

Hi John :)

My injury has now cleared up :)

It took about 3 months  of complete rest - well, when i say rest i mean NO martial arts, no stretching, no kicking.

I still did a bit of running and some weight training but that was about it.

I honestly thought i did some real damage to my hip joint, at one point i thought it was all over in the Martial Arts for me, but i was really happy when i tried some kicks last week and i felt NO pain for the first time in months! :)
