What do you guys (and girls) spend your time training on?

Does everyone prefer to practice kicking over forms, techniques over weapons etc?

Do you spend more time on one aspect compared to others?

i spend more time on forms, weapon forms, and kicking as i do these about 5 nights a week and then my techs about twice a week when i have a partner available to do them with. With me bro now flying round the world its hard to do techs on your own even though i have practiced them on my own with all the pins and finishes lol :D

Yeah i've done the techniques on my own too.....its amazing the funny looks you get from people walking by.

PS- If you are who I think you are then I hope you don't mind me studying your spinning back kick you done in the 2005 June demo. Its the one kick I have real problems with and I've been slowing down the dvd and studying it......and it has helped...alot.... :)

i try and practice every thing, but i find forms the hardest to do well so i put a bit more practice in to them. weapons are my favorite so they tend to get more time devoted to them than the rest, i wish i had more time and better weather so i could work on my knife throwing and archery.
gi ma ja se it looks like every one is trying to up there breaking demo this year, good job i've got a secret weapon to unleash then, can't be upstaged by you and airnick. lol

I always believe that every demo should show a natural progression from the last, whether its the standard of forms, the types of board breaks or even self defence routines.

As for my part I'm working on how to walk on water!!! lol

I try to spend my time working on all my curriculum, and some time branching out from there. For instance, I might try seeing how I can apply dan bong to Ki Bohn Soo... not strictly curriculum, but not too far off the mark.

In class, I just do whatever the instructors are having us do that night. At home, I tend to practice whatever it is I feel I need more practice on. Maybe the previous night in class we worked on something and I found I wasn't doing too well, or maybe I picked up a new pointer and so I'll try working that at home to ingrain it more.

I don't think I necessarily have any particular favoriate area... it's all fun and good. But when I'm practicing alone and don't have a specific thing I wish to work on, I tend to fall back to doing hyung since I can always use the practice there and it's a good general thing to do and improves skills overall. I too will practice techniques alone if I have to, which is why often when I have access to a partner and the freedom to do what I want (e.g. an open class) I'll prefer to work on techniques because I can do hyung alone just fine but technique practice is really better with a partner.

Monday and Tuesday classes are usually Forms & Sparring, Wednesday & Thursday are techniques.

Kicking, punching, and nak bub is worked in to any / all of those days. Similarly, weapons seem to be worked in to the Advanced (brown belt +) classes anytime. I don't know how the Black Belt classes go.

Two Friday's a month are Black Belt Club (weapons) classes, the other two are "make-up" classes and either testing or promotions.

Saturday color-belt classes can be anything. The beginners "make-up" class usually does both forms & techniques, the Intermediate & Advanced class may do forms, techniques, staff-spinning.

I'm still working on my outside-of-class practice schedule. A lot of the last month has been "recovering" from three years of graduate school in addition to full-time job and training.

So far it's looking like at home I focus mostly on weapons work and complementary strength / flexibility / conditioning training. I'm thinking seriously about adding in some punching, kicking, and combination drills.

Monday and Tuesday classes are usually Forms & Sparring, Wednesday & Thursday are techniques

Is the school strictly this way? That every Mon/Tues you know it will be form work and no techniques, and every Wed/Thurs will be techinques, and no forms? Perhaps slight variations now and again, but generally is that how things go?

See, at my school the official schedule says Mon/Tues Forms, Wed/Thurs Techniques, Fri/Sat forms & techniques. However, we generally don't stick with that... I'm not sure why (hasn't been a big deal, so I've just never bothered to ask). When you walk into the dojang, you generally have no idea what your class will consist of. Maybe sometimes you see the class before doing something and that is what you do too, but not always. Sometimes it can vary based on who is there to run the class. Sometimes it varies based on the class composition (3 people vs. 15 people, the goals of the people there). Who knows, but the point is it doesn't really follow the official schedule.

There are times I wish I knew what was going on in class before I got there. If I need attention in a particular area, I can make sure I attend on the night I know it will be covered. Can be helpful when life gets hectic and you have to shuffle your schedule around. But on the same token, sometimes it's good when things are just sprung on you... avoids monotony. Plus, I think in my earlier days if I knew tonight was 1000 kick drill I might have avoided it. But now, I'd seek that class out. :)

I've taken a similar approach in my home workouts. I used to have a strict layout working say hyung on Monday, kick/punch on Tuesday, Weapons on Thursday, Techniques on Friday. But I found that didn't work too well for me. I work better now when I just leave it open... I workout at home on these set days, but what I do fully depends upon what I need work on. And I also try to make an effort that if I haven't done something for a while to throw it in, or if I'm doing something too much to make sure I switch up. So it's a bit more free form, but I am enjoying this strategy much more and it's paying off being more flexible.

How are other schools regarding class schedule? Is the content pre-set and adhered to? Is it free form? How about your at-home workouts? Which do you tend to prefer, more free-form or more structured?

Outside of classes I like to mix weapons with forms. Favourite of mine is to do Ki Cho Hyung once then 50 staff (no.1) spins both ways, then ki cho hyung twice then 60 spins each way all the way up until I'm on ki cho hyung x6 with 100 spins each way. then move onto other forms and weapons forms. gets a good sweat going and burn on the forearms.

The other free nights I have I'll concentrate on kicking and body conditioning then another night focus solely on techniques for speed work then pick a set and work on it in detail.

When training on my own I usually run through a quick kick warmup. Then I run through all my forms weapons included. I also throw in some heavy bag work. Sometimes I run through techniques as though I have a partner just to keep them fresh in my mind.

It's funny... as soon as I typed this, I get proven wrong.

Today's Wednesday... technique day according to the schedule. During my class, SBN says "Ok, it's Wednesday, let's work on techniques."

But still, what I wrote tends to happen. Might be a symptom of when others are running things vs. SBN running things. Tells me tho that when I'm helping with class and the question "Ok, what to do?" comes up, I'll consider the day and suggest accordingly.

Me too, sort of. This week on Monday (Forms & Sparring night), KJN had us work techniques with nak bub the entire class. I have an idea why the exception though.

I can't say it's a 100% rule, but our school sticks with it pretty closely. One exception tends to be for white belts in their first month or so, we'll often work both forms and techniques in a class.

Another regular exception is in the week right before color-belt testing, we'll check students to see if they're close to being ready. If they are, we'll often focus on the part(s) they're struggling with, regardless of the night.

Even with those guidelines, I never know going in to class just what will be covered. Some "forms & sparring" days, we end up sparring the entire class and never starting forms. Other days are the opposite. Sometimes we get an entire class that is *just* on nak bub and/or acrobatics. Or kicking, or sparring drills, or four-directional blocking.

I can't predict the 1000-kick routine either :).
