View Full Version : Is there a reason why everyone just does weightlifting for their arms?

I've been checking out a lot of fitness routines and I just wonder why people don't pay attention to cardio, abs, legs, and the back. How many are just starting to get into shape and how many are training for MAs. If your just getting started to whatever makes ya feel happy but if you all are just training for MA, either sport or recreation, you really should emphasis the cardio, abs, legs, and back more.

because they want to be bicep blasters :bang:
i give alot of bodybuilding advice on a site i help mod and i see ALOT of training workouts that involve hammering the biceps into meltdown.
people dont realise that the arms get their size from 2/3 triceps

Everyone?
Some people do, and thats fine with me! :D These are the guys that spend year after playing with small weights and never get much bigger or stronger...

Which in turn get their size from working other big movements like DL and squats :D

triceps get a bigger hammering from pressing exercises than squats and deads due their recruitment of extending the arm, with deads and squats there is no arm movement.
But i agree that more people should get on the power racks :)

You never see people that can squat and DL large amounts that have little arms. There good all over get strong exercises even if they have little direct arm exercise.
My real point was not to concentrate on hammering arms if you want big arms :D

the GH release from heavy compound exercises like DL and squats is unbeatable, my legs used to be 27.5" round the thigh and even though i hated leg day (due to the energy needed), they were one of my greatest assests.
triceps dont get exercised enough to break down the muscle and stimulate growth during squats and deadlifts but yes, the GH release attributes to their size through those exercises.
lol, i see a lot of replies to questions like "i want bigger biceps" such as "well, start squatting more!" :D

Theres a good reason for that, most people winging about the size of there arms don't do enough (if any) heavy leg work. You obviously have a sound knowledge of bodybuilding, and I do see the point you are trying to make, but remember that there are a hell of a lot of people that do not know the importance of squats etc in a programme- so a heavy emphasis is described by people on here to get them to switch there focus away from curls and extensions. :)

too true, noobs tend to stick 5 exercises for arms, 7 for chest with all the declines and inclines to hit "the upper/lower chest" ( :bang: ) and "isolation exercises" ( :bang: )
and using the leg extension machine once a week for legs :D

Most newbie people want big arms, just because its a fashion thing. A size pack and pecs is optional. Legs always get forgotten. Its just because they are ignorant lol

"lightbulbs" as i call them.
If you stick with heavy compounds and add weight every week, you WILL grow. You cant get stronger without getting bigger in the end that's the whole point.

Not only that, but the biceps grow more so with heavier loads than higher volumes in general if I remember right, so doing a gazillion sets of curls will get you nothing, while heavy rows, deadlifts, and squats will balloon you up into a beast. Rar! :D
So to sum up the world and all it's information:
Squat, Bench, and Deadlift *insert expletives of choice, preferably nouns*.  (ok, you can do other things, but they better be compound or the po po's will be on yo azz! :D )

You've pretty much hit it on the head. You wear a t-shirt and you see your arms. Wear a vest and the same thing applies. That's why we have a load of people at the beach wearing big bagy trousers and no tops :p It's similar to when someone goes "you look strong! let's see your muscles" which in turn gets a biceps flax by the other guy :p
As summer approaches, the first thing people see are arms. They styart working these like a beast, and by the time they take their other clothes off, they're so caught up in arm work they can't stop. Curls are also like a drug - once you start them, you get obsessed!

Because all people are stupid. (Present company excepted, of course.) ;)
Truth be told, I think we (the regular MAP H&F crew) do a pretty good job of spreading the Compound Lift gospel. Between us, T-Nation, and maybe a handful of other sites, I think we're doing the best we can.

Hi,
I am new to bodybuilding and i was wondering if leg exercises could slow down your kicking performances by a big amount?

No they won't unless you have crap training practices.

Yeah, I tryed showing off my legs instead of the biceps but then I got this indecent exposure charge for taking off my pants. :p

The other thing also is that a lot of people are just plain stupid. They throw out the exercise chart for their weight set if it comes with one and the only exercise they know is a bicep curl so thats the only one they do

SHHHHHH!!!! Don't Say Things Like That! The people at my gym might here you, and I really don't want to stand in line to use the racks.

I like inclines and declines due the different recruitment of the pectorals vs tricep and shoulder involvement. I also maintain roughly a 2:1 ratio of rows : bench presses. I figure the back and abs hold me upright, not the pecs.

I don't know I see more routines with many more multiple sets of dips and bench press/ or shoulder presses than deadlifts or core exercises, and rarely ever see cardio routines.
