Hello, I'm still looking for any kung fu schools in the Calgary area; preferably Choy lay fut or Bak Mei. If anyone could help me out, I would greatly appreciate it.

There is a White Tiger school (that I train at) and a White Crane school nearby on 16th ave & Center street.

The White Crane School is "Tek Guan Academy"
The White Tiger School is "The Physics Of Kung Fu"

You could also go to temple (granted it's Kenpo), or get ahold of Jui Wai, he's a grandmaster in Hung Gar and teaches lessons out of his home up in hawkwood.

Email me if you need anything more.

Thanks for the info. The white crane school sounds good although I'm looking for something a little more practical, I prefer schools that actually allow you to apply what you know in sparring and not just forms.

I went to check out the "physics of Kung Fu" school about a year ago, the herbal training was tempting but I tend to shy away from people that teach multiple styles.

Do you know if they still teach Choy lay fut at the Chinese Cultural center? If memory serves me right it's just before the center street bridge in downtown.

I'm quite sure they do, Physics doesn't do herbal training, although we do use jao to accelerate healing.

If you want really effective practicality, take Sambo or something, think they have some down in forrest lawn.

I know a lot of great places in Calgary, 2 of which I attend. I've only ever been to one Kung Fu place in the north, if you really want I can probably get you the address for that place.

Thanks Sweet, I would like that. But could you also tell me what styles some of these schools specialize in?

Thanks in advance.

Why thank you :D

I train in a Hapkido place in the south - the style is primarily - 99% Hapkido but certainly has influences of TKD and Judo seeing as my instructor there has Dan ranks in those arts. At higher levels, there is weapons fighting from an art called Kum Sul Do - which I believe is a generic term for weapons fighting.

The other school I go to is a Ninjutsu/JKD place - with an instructor who to my knowledge has experience in quite a number of other arts, but I wouldn't say 'specializes' in.

The best information I could get regarding the 'Kung Fu' (or so I think) place is this:
Black Dragon Gil Lafantaisie Tel. (403) 280-8787.

You'll have to give them a call to find out. As far as I know, they do teach Kung Fu there, I vaguely remember seeing it on the sign on my way in there for a seminar :)

Lafantaisie is good, but he's quite pricey, and he mainly teaches Kenpo Karate under the guise of Kung Fu, if you want a really good teacher, try and locate Piercey, he's probably the best in the city, but I'm not sure if he has left Temple yet or if he's still teaching there.

In your opinion.

Yes indeed! Have you met/trained with him?

Yep :) He used to train with both my father and my uncle in hapkido. Now my uncle is his assistant instructor. :D

I never trained under him but I watched one of his classes and liked what I saw unfortunately I live too far away :(

Cool, I will tell Sensei Wes to say hi to you next time I see him :)

It does indeed suck that you live too far away. I can vouch for the training... I love it :) BTW, whereabouts do you live in Calgary? And also, have you had any luck finding a place? If not, I have another recommendation I think you might like (I know Sensei Wes would agree with me that it's a good recommendation, seeing how much he enjoyed the seminar of..) :)

Any luck so far?

Eh... kind of. I talked to Simon who still teaches CLF at the CCC but was disappointed to find that he only teaches on Wednesdays. But on the upside his fees are reasonable so I'm going to go down and watch one of his classes next week and see what he has to offer.

But I'm still open for suggestions. :D

There is a JKD school down in Forrest Lawn, but I'm not sure if they're accredited, you could go ask I suppose.

Where abouts do you live in Calgary - and what are you looking for in terms of training - ie: self defense only? a good workout? I guess what I'm really asking is - are you set on Kung Fu? If so, why?

I know of a few places - not kung fu ones though. :)

Has anyone trained at the "GungFu Club" here in Calgary.
I think they focus upon BaGua, Hsing-i, Hung Gar, and Wing Chun.
They are located in the Ingelwood neighborhood.

If so any impressions, pointers ?

Also have not been able to dig up anything on the White Crane School in the north. Any info would help.

I don't know if this thread is too old or not.. but I know of another kung fu school.

It's taught at the UofC in the Kinesiology building. They focus a lot of sparring, like proper punching and kicking which I think is what you said you were looking for, and also on kung fu forms.

The club is non-profit, which means that classes are free.

Check out their website if your curious:

I think it's only open to University students free (yes, I'm a student) otherwise you pay a fee through alberta recreation. I'm quite sure they teach Wing Chun.

Nono, it's open free to anybody. I'm a student too and I talked with the people who go there with me and most of them don't go to the UofC.

The other ones your thinking of are through Campus Rec, like the TKD, Aikido, Kendo, and Karate clubs. You have to pay fee's for those.
