View Full Version : Why does it seem TKD and Hapkido go hand in hand?

I train in Hapkido, and have noticed a lot of people who train in both Taekwondo and Hapkido, along with many teachers and masters. I was curious as to why its such a common grouping, are they similar and/or compliment each other well? (I know Hapkido gets some kicks from TKD)
(Keep in mind I've only been doing Hapkido for 1/2 a year and haven't trained in anything else yet, so I haven't seen a lot of TKD yet)

Well they are both Korean arts for sure. And they do share some kicks. As far as I know it seems peolpe like hapkido for self defense and Taekwondo involves more sparring.
P.S I don't know much

Mainly they are the same because they both started about the same time and in the same place. Most have and use the same stances, kicks, punches.

yea, similar kicks, except that Hapkido kicks are often executed with more efficient movements due to the fact that throwing is often involved during sparring. And Hapkido-ist use their front leg more often than their back, again due to the fact that back kicks can easily be caught and a throw easily executed. And of course the more obvious use of hands in Hapkido compared to TKD. Hapkido and TKD complements each other almost perfectly pretty much

Hapkido basically has the entire TKD system in it minus the forms.

I have to respectfully disagree with the above quote. TKD and Hapkido are very different styles, both in technique and philosophy.
Hapkido employs a great variety of kicks, most of which are different from those in TKD. It also focuses on joint locks, throws and diverse hand techniques. A key component of HKD is a good system of breakfalls. Philosophically, Hapkido works on a circular principle of diverting energy and using it against the opponent.
Taekwondo is a system with fast powerful kicks (and hand techniques to a degree). It uses a linear based system of movement. When you train in TKD, you usually sharpen up your speed, footwork and precision of strikes , especially kicks.
Both styles are Korean and complement each other nicely. TKD gives you good speed and power in a linear attack. TKD provides a great arsenal of long, and mid range strikes. Hapkido adds in more in-depth defence, including self defence techniques, counters, throws, and breakfalls as well as powerful close and intermediate range striking. I personally like to use both styles to make me a more complete martial artist at all ranges as well as continue on with the tradition of Korean arts that I have been studying for a long time.
that is a good question. i think they have come togeather so much cuz tkd people havn't or they stoped using the self defense techniques of there system. most hkd shcools don't teach there forms so it was simple to pick up some hkd techniques. as for chazz, tkd and hkd are no where the same. and as far as the kicks, most of the spin kicks in tkd were created by
Bong Soo Han, he's a hkd grand master.

They come from the same country (Korea) so they share common roots, and also all the kicks found in tae kwon do are included in hapkido, tha main difference is that tae kwon do specializes in kicks, and the trademark of hapkido are the grapplings and pressure points use.

I think Thomas is closer to the mark. Linear and circular systems compliment each other well, and to study 2 styles that are geographically linked usually means that they will go hand in hand better than 2 form seperate parts of the globe.
Besides, if you are also learning the language as it pertains to your art, you're already half way there :D
