Is there anyone who knows of a decent book on this style, or even knows how to use them well? Its versatile, most certainly. I kinda feel like the ant here, knowing only a little bit of what I've been training with. Improvisation, I've learned, is key.

I train with the cane. I know a few good sources for videos as well.

Are Canemasters any good. There was an article in BlackBelt magazine on those guys.

Well... I have seen the tapes, and I wasn't real impressed. But that is just me. Mark Shuey is an accomplished martial artist by all means, and for many people his system would work well. I just disagree with many of his policies, and there wasn't enough in close work for me in what I saw.

In Korea the cane is usually just exactly like the staff, the old people there use a stick there really isn't that hook at the end. So pretty much in my school when your talking cane your talking staff. I have some good Staff material from korea from a demonstration. By the way the school's website that I goto is www.hapkiyoosool.com (no video clips there)
(if you want to talk to me privately my msn messenger is sephiroth121386@hotmail.com I could show you some clips from the demonstration if you'd like)

The ICHF has a couple of cane videos... I have watched the first one and it is pretty good. Tape 1 covers basic techniques on how to use the cane for striking and for self defence. I haven't gotten into the second tape yet. In my opinion, it's a pretty resource.
We also did some cane with GM Pelligrini (ICHF founder) at a seminar and I found it pretty effective... and fun.
In Korea, we did some techniques with the cane, but at the school where I was, we did use the hook end quite a bit as well as the "staff" style applications.
I like the cane and can see myself studying it more down the road. It is a practical weapon and one that you can legally carry... and someday you may need to use a cane!
Good luck. (For information on ordering the ICHF videos, check out http://www.ichf.com/videos/canevideos.htm)

I just spent a couple nights going through the ICHF Hapkido Cane videos (1 and 2) again... along with some writing down of material and practice with a buddy. My final conclusion... they are pretty good. They really aren't that long but do showcase a huge numbner of techniques... alll of which can be modified and adapted. The format is good and clearly shows each one. I haven't seen other can videos but these were pretty dang good in my own opinion. If you have specific questions on the videos, let me know.
