Is Silat all about Fashion and Image ? Well you would wonder if you came from another Martial Arts and were having a look around. From discussing what type of Sarong you should wear or not at all, till wearing trousers or not down to Bandana's and reeboke, what happen to all the Silat Martial Artists.
There no talk or discussions on the Martial Arts side unless its about History or Religion. Why cant we get some discussion going about the different types of punches and kicks between styles. Training Methods for condition or building speed. How different stype of Silat develop energy and power through their movements resulting better techniques. Silat techniques that work better on the ground. Advantages of training in different styles of Silat. Teachers training method. Instead what we get, discussions of flipping sarongs, jees guys no insulted intended but some times these forums are like a bunch of women gossiping all the time. Let's get some real discussion going here and lets take some pride in Silat and have adult dissucssions. Lets not worry if one teacher ties his sarong one way and another a different way. Instead lets talk about How did that teacher move? Did he have good flow? Which mannerisms did he use? Did he use compacting blows etc...

Does any one agree with me? Or should we change the name of this forum to "The Bingo Club"

When I first saw my teacher move, I didnt care what title he had, what clothes he was wearing. I just went wow!!! this is how I want to fight. My first problem really was learning how to move. Even though I had been training in Silat for 13 Years when I saw the fluildity and grace of his movements which in truth was decoying me into a false sense of secruity by trying to punch him. I was amazed my biggest problem is learning to make my movement fluild. In Pukulan Cimande Pusaka we call this training in the Water Element and learning to have the qualites of water,ie flowing, blending into what ever comes at us. To me as a teacher I find most students have this as their biggest problems. Most other martial arts look to be very much based on power and strength while Silat is by far a much more flowing art especially when a student can add things like the Principles of Off Timing to his movements.

Ooh does my bum look big in this sarong :D

Yeah, I agree about the fluidity. With me a lot of the problem was getting rid of the more 'rigid' habits left from a previous art. I am now beggining to get it, especially with hand drills, maintaining the right degree of power and relaxation.

What continually impresses me about Silat is how almost any movement can effortlessly flow into any other. This gives it a unique fluidity and makes it so adaptable.

I think the fluidity in our art is something that non-practtioners will never be able to get until they actually practice it. After you absorb it then it is something that stays with you. Hard to explain.

Good idea. Get to it.

We're waiting for you to put something on the plate.

As for the sarong and gi trousers it was my thread. If you don't like it or have not contribution to it then simply don't post in it. Simple really.

It's a valid question regarding Silat and it's posted in the correct forum.

Hi Tim
Yes I did have fluid movements but compared to the time I first met up with Pendekar Sanders i was like a "bull in a china shop" this is not to say I havent learnt from my other teacher I had. I just found Pendekar Sanders one of the most fluild teacher I had ever came accross. Its this unique movement which is know in Pukulan Cimande Pusaka as the "Concept of flow and power hitting" which most students join our classes to learn. Its something which most other martial artist have a hard time dealing and defending against.

Tim I think as human being we are alwayes on a learning curve. If we train hard we should continually get better so I hope that Year 14 I was better than Year 13 and now I hope at Year 21 I'm better than Year 20. Thats the real beauty of Silat it teaches us to alwayes try and better ourselves.

i will have to agree with liam and ular sawa, the movements of your art look awkward to the untrained eye,and can not be fully appreciated until the whipping strikes and kicks are felt, especially your snake expressions...which by the way are painful...the best you can do is share your fluidity and understanding with others to promote the art...iam sure you are both excellant practioners who learned much from william sanders...great art!its to bad little credit is given on a larger scale for what your teacher has given a chunk of his life too....
