i'm bored and also getting extremely stressed out at work, i need a break but we haven't got enough god damn staff!!!!!

anyway, back to kuk sool...

i've just started learning dan bong il hyung which is very cool but poses a question.

does anyone know where i can buy some "proper" dan bongs rather than the cut down dowel that i'm using at the moment?

:)

The only prefashioned dan bongs I've seen for sale are through Cane Masters and ICHF (Combat Hapkido). Only trouble there is they are branded with the ICHF logo... not a bad thing, but might create an awkward situation if Kuk Sa Nim sees them. ;)

I think I also saw someone out of Australia making them (another Hapkido group), but it was the version with the cord in one end so it's not suitable for Kuk Sool style applications.

I just made a pair on my own, and I'm rather happy with the results. I went down to Home Depot (not sure of an equivalent store in England) and found various dowels there. They had them in various woods (I got oak), and various diameters (I think mine are 1.125", certainly at least an inch). Cut them about 14" long, spent an afternoon with some sandpaper smoothing it out and lightly rounding the ends, then rubbed a few coats of tung oil. They work nicely, strong wood, feel good in the hand, look nice, and certainly hurt when you get struck by one. :)

airnick,

you're probably right sir, in english it's the double short stick(staff) form.

Go to the kitchen supply store and by the wooden rolling pins for baking.
They are uniform size and usually about 33-36 cm and are perfect for your needs.

My great uncle turned me some on a lathe they are tops. Heavy but great for training. Make the rattan ones i have seem like they aren't there. I might be able to get some made for you Dave if you ask nicely :) Though i can't promise delivery date. Find some one who does wood turning it will take them about 20 mins to run some up for you. :)

I just found this site http://www.woodensteel.com/. They make dan bong (tho they lacked pictures on the site). Go to the main page, then on the left under "Custom Items" look at "Staff and Stick".

What was interesting was they have a steel dan bong, then 2 wooden... a rounded and an octagon. I could see the octagon being interesting, especially in locks and pressure point applications.

Their price doesn't seem bad, but from the other suggestions listed in this thread you may be able to do something less expensive yourself... and have the pride of crafting it yourself. :)
