today, my friends and i had a 3 hour long sparring sessions. i've never taken formal jiu-jitsu lessons, but have had the techniques explained and demonstrated for me by those who have, and recently purchased a book entitled "brazilian jiu-jitsu:theory and technique"

and now, getting to the point (finally), this system is amazing! the only techniques i'm really comfortable with are armbars, and a few different types of chokes.

we didn't allow a few things, like grabbing clothing, attacking the groin, or strikes to the face (braces :().

but i was able to completely dominate them, mostly by getting into a top mount position and punching repeatedly to the chest until i got an arm up to work with. also, i did fairly well from the guard, but i haven't gotten much practice with it yet.

so i guess this post was kind of pointless, just saying how much i loved bjj and that it is incredibly useful.

Are there no classes of any sort?

Fine, no BJJ. But you'd be better off joining a Judo club then pounding each other in the back yard.

Once you got some basics you can add and adapt. But join a class, any class.
