Hello.

I wondered if anyone has information on:

a) Organizations that still practice and promote the Cumberland and Westmoreland "style" of wrestling

b) Seminars and/or schools that teach this style of wrestling in the United States, preferably in the Northeast

c) Manuals on this style of wrestling (author and title information, etc.)

I am looking for information on this topic because they are among the wrestling traditions that may have been adapted for grappling in English bareknuckle pugilism.

Thanks!

Hi Cross-Trainer

There are period manuals available to download from this website....

http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Acropolis/4933/westernarts.html

Also check out the groups connected with the site, there are a few in the US that cross train with the various styles including Cumberland and Westmoreland and pugilism.

Hi,
you can find more info on the web if u take a look at
the following styles: "Gouren" (French wrestling),
"Strumpa" or "Istrumpa" or "Strumpa" (Italian wrestling),
They are backhold wrestling methods.

Sorry, I just posted a thread without reading this.

Here's a news site for active wrestling clubs and competitions in Cumbria:

Oooh Cumberland wrestling, I've done that! Twice in fact at local village fair's. I sucked royally but it would be cool to do some more of it.

Funnily enough, I was thinking of having a go, as I am stranded in Cumbria at the moment and am sorely missing some grappling fun. :)

Yeah, being stranded in Cumbria sucks, I did it for the first 18 years of my life :D I do hear tell there are a few decent Judo schools dotted around the place though.
