Has anyone got any good techniques for escaping the scarf hold. The only one i could find is pushing the head with your free hand and trying to scoop your leg over your opponents head...tried it when sparring and failed miserably...

Turn into them and try and get to your knees.

To do this your elbow needs to get to the ground, so if they are controlling it it will be harder.

If that isn't working keep pressure into them (like your trying to get to your knees) they will have to push back to counter, switch directions and pull them right over top of you.

Confido, use both hands not just the one free hand and push like blases.

And watch for that arm bar...

There are at least 6 pretty standard escapes from this position- bit busy right now but I'll post them later (I'm sure I've done this before somewhere!)

6? Does that include combinations?

No - at least 6 different escapes

Ok - here we go... assuming holder is at your right side.

1. Uphill Turn
As mentioned above. Push his face away with your left hand as you spin to your knees (swing your legs up then down to get momentum) and as you come to your knees take his back. You need to get your right elbow to the floor before trying this escape - do this by faking another escape or by letting him think he can go for the choke (thus releasing your arm)

2. Bridge & roll
Join hands and grip tightly under his ribcage. Move your hips into him and bridge hard to lift him onto your upper chest - then turn (look) to your left and roll him over you.

3. Leg scissor
Hook your left heel over his left thigh - especially if his knee is up. Pull it towards you and slide your right thigh under his leg. Scissor your ankles over his knee and roll him over you.

4.Poke & hook
Use whatever you can to make him lift his head (thumb under ear, left back knuckle drag to his left temple, etc) then, lying on your right side (you should be anyway), hook your left leg over his head and hook his head back - be ready to push his face with your right hanmd as you sit up to reverse the position.

5. Far arm capture
Pinch his skin at his left ribs with your free hand - as he reaches back with his hand trap it and scissor it with your legs. Turn to your left and either roll him off of roll him right over into a crucifix. It is also possible to use a triangle choke from here.

6. Heel hack & sit up
Hack at his left thigh with your left heel - HARD. As he moves his leg away - forward - swing your legs up and then down to create momentum as you sit up pushing him into the space created (move away slightly to make more space).

who mentioned comp....? :D

Depends on the competition too - most submission grappling formats will allow most of those.

One that won't be allowed in a comp, but does tend to get a result, not pretty and not nice. Take your thumb and stick it up his bum hole, believe me it will disturb his balance and allow you to escape, people tend to react to that one. If he doesnt react to that one, you may be asked out on a date after the fight is over!!!

Thanks for the advice, ill give most of them a try next time, sorry Patrick i'll give your method a miss, wouldnt want to be caught in some new fangled thumb lock counter and be surgically removed at the local Hospital

Don't knock it till you try it bud;)

Wasnt being flippant, but the key to all escapes is to create space and this is one, slightly extreme way to do it. Always good though i think to have an extreme solution for an extreme situation.

It's a sound escape by the sounds of things! ;)

Why would you use scarf hold not in competition? I'd hate to be rolling around on the 'street'.

Not by choice - but it happens!

Also - all the escapes I listed are legal in MMA competition.

No, what I meant was in the previous post it was said that they wouldn't use scarf hold in competition that's why I asked why not.

Which makes me think... Nah, I'll make a new thread rather than hijack.
