I have never been to a MAP meet. What goes on at one? Is is like a seminar with experts running different workshops/classes?

Or just a get together? Is there any sparring?

I live in N/W Uk so I m thinking of coming down to check it out.

Effectively, there are mini-classes run by instructors from various martial arts, I believe last year there were about 8 instructors teaching a wide variety of MA, ranging from capoeira to MMA. Classes last about 45mins-1 hour throughout the day and there are food breaks etc. All in all, well worth going to. :)

:) Well obviously I don't know if I have any plans for July 2006 but it sounds good and I'll try to make it. I should be free because I'll have graduated by then and be enjoying my super long summer holidays. As for money, I'm not sure how much I'll have to work with, but I'll definitely try to be there. :)

Hiya

I would imagine it will be fine - as long as she has the appropriate insurance arranged through her association, etc. There may be some exclusions (i.e. grappling - if we have any of course!) but yeah that should be fine.

Train from Paddington (First Great Western) then change at Reading (South West Trains) to Bracknell.

Contact either company or else National Rail Enquiries for times.

Cheers dude.

Found the timetables now in case anyone else from London wants them:

http://www.firstgreatwestern.co.uk/

Trains are every half hour and take almost exactly an hour.

What sort of time do these things normally start, or is it too early to be asking questions like that? :D

Would anyone be interested in purchasing a professionally filmed DVD of the event? How much would you be prepared to pay for a half hour or maybe hour long DVD thats done properly? Just wanna see if its worth the blood and pain to organise - I want too but I don't want to waste my money either....

Blimey moosey...sounds ike you should have attended last year :D

I had krav maga, Kyusho-Jutsu, Aikido and FMA and knife defences last year...

I will still have some sort of weapons again this year but where possible I will be attempting to have a few different classes from last year.

I'd have to honestly echo that I'm not fussed about T-shirts.

As for MAs, BJJ would be cool, but that's all I can think of for now.

Pretty sure I can make it, unless my holiday is moved (still not totally sure on date of that).

Well, seeing as my last post didn't post properly, I'll try again.

T-shirts, must admit I'm not too bothered, unless their something to wear while we train, then I don't have to worry about someone ripping my stuff (not that that really bothers me thought).

As for MA's:

Capoeira - Popular last year, always great to watch, and those Capoeira girls...

Systema - I enjoyed this last year, mainly because it's quite different from anything else

MMA - I want to see Sonshu getting his back side handed to him by Levo again :D

Muay Thai & Some other striking art, e.g. Taekwondo(sp?) - mainly because there's constantly a debate about how effective Muay Thai is (bear in mind I've recently taken up Muay Thai) when compaired to other striking arts

Judo / BJJ - some form of grappling art for those who don't want to know how to hit someone

Some sort of weapons thing, although I'd imagine this would be limited by insurance and how many practise weapons can be provided.

I've just pulled myself away from the ninjutsu forum for the first time in about a year and decided to come and have a look see what everyone else is up to.

I never knew you did MAP meets and have to say I think it is a great idea. Unfortunately, the July 1st date coincides with an important Bujinkan seminar in Liverpool or I would have tried to make my way along.

Anyway, all the best with it and I hope you have a fantastic time.

Ok Peeps

Sounds like it is all systems go now. I am about to accept the insurance for the event which is for Employers Liability and Public Liability. Everyone who attends the event attends at their own risk. You must have your own cover for the event and all instructors will be expected to have sufficient cover to protect the attendees. I have no intention of getting all stuffy about this, but I will be mentioning more than once that its your responsilitiy to ensure you are insured for the event. I've done my bit!

Now...I have already confirmed I will not be doing T shirts - its not cost effective - I just can't find the prices that the USA can provide the NY Meet - if I manage to do this event again next year I might look into sponsorship but thats next year.

I would appreciate more input on what you would like to see this year at the event though.

I will also be doing a registration thinghy to see what interest there is - I want to see how many people would like to attend.

If you have any other thoughts or suggestions lemme know. It doesn't hurt to suggest things to me now does it :D

Melanie
16-Feb-2006, 09:04 PM
Ok

The interest so far has been
Ninjitsu: 2
BBJJ: 3
Jujitsu: 3
Aikido: 4
Judo: 2
Krav Maga: 2
Weapons: 5
Capoeira: 2
Systema: 1
MMA: 1
Muay Thai: 2
Taekwondo:1
IMA: 1

Not of lot of interest thus far - if you want a pick of instructors either MAP Members or otherwise we need to pick what we wanna see! But - I will pick instructors meself if ya like :D

I would prefer to not repeat last year - but if the interest is there I'll do exactly the same! ;)

I would like to see Hapkido, maybe TKD, maybe Sombo, weapons too

Alansmurf

Looks like it will be Pressure Points but just so you know what's on offer....

1) I can teach an 8 move Tai Chi form so you be able to come away from the session with something that you can 'keep' and practice.

or

2) Pressure Points with particular reference to redundancy (NO not what you do when the boss fires you) - By redundancy what I am going to show is techniques that work really well when you get the pressure point but STILL WORK even if you miss it.

So - let me & Mel know which one you would prefer me to teach.

All the best.

Robert.

Me too, I have two suggestions for stuff I could do:

1. An introduction to Shorin Ryu Karate (assuming we're looking for a style based session)

or

2. The bic pen as a covert weapon - the pen is mightier than the sword so to speak (this would be a subject rather than style oriented session).

Anyone have any preferences?

Why wouldn't we take you seriously? For people who don't do TKD you are just giving is a taste of what it's like, not a full-blown course of instruction. I have no doubt that as a black belt you are extremely well qualified to do this.

Also, I'm sure that everyone coming to the MAP Meet will be not only be open-minded and keen to learn new things, but also very supportive of those who have kindly volunteered to demonstrate their arts.

So I don't think you have any reason to be scared! :)

I am pretty much accepting all offers - as long as they are NOT a reapeat of last year. Its only my second event - I shouldn't need to just yet! There are sooo many arts...all I need is offers of something different!

I'd love to go down and see/teach some JKD ranging from Jun Fan traditional (yet non-classical ;) ) to concepts.

Although allready forsee a problem with this regarding my age - simply because I do not hold the teaching qualifications to contribute or run a work shop.

And If I did have such qualifications, would you really take anybody seriously at such an age, my reccomendation is not to :D

Despite this, I am considering getting my butt down there - however am concerned with whether this event is all about the martial arts or just sizing up members from MAP in the flesh.

If such is the case, many enemies await me. :woo:

You are right to a point - I am looking for qualified and insured instructors. Its to protect you and the attendees and quite frankly to protect your own martial art too. I want to make sure that the most suitable people are attending to represent their arts. There will be people who may never have seen this art attending and its best to leave them with a good impression! But age - that has nothing to do with it. Its only if you don't take yourself seriously that its a problem!

This event is all about charity/martial arts/opening minds. How many times do we see on this forum that people have never heard of or seen certain martial arts? How many times do we hear people who reckon they have trained in an art for many years without being challenged and feel their art is the only art out there? This is not about competition, this event is about seeing what else is out there, what we can learn from other arts and each other. Sure its also about meeting people you have spoken to on the forums for the last few years too - but thats just being sociable :D

I hope you can make the event :)

Kind words Mel, still though I may be of the right attitude and skill to teach (if just the basics) I do not hold any form of insurance or certification that permits me to run a work shop.

Frankly I wouldn't want to. Probably get my ass kicked :D

But it would be cool to be able to demonstrate my ideas on the martial arts in return for others. You know, on a more informal basis. Without a big sign hanging overhead saying 'NEB'S ULTIMATE JKD!'

Again because if someone gets hurt, I'm screwed. And also my enemies will be able to identify me

even though this is my 3rd post i'm really interested in attending already, I've wanted to check out capoeira for ages now if you manage to get any, and even though i do bujinkan ninjutsu a couple of times a week i wouldn't mind doing it there as i'm probably not going to make the liverpool thing (too far away). I wouldn't mind checking out one of the other x-can's teaching if (as is likely) all the bujinkan instructors are busy, always wondered how different it is </heresy>
but i'll probably attend even without those two, sounds like a great opportunity!

I'm also interested in more grappling, as it's a very weak aspect of my method.

In truth, I am confident in my chances against an efficient grappler, simply because of how well I've faired up to this point.

Having said that, I am not an idiot, and cannot rely on strikes and sheer luck when someone who really knows what they're doing steps in one day and takes me to the ground.

12. Ninjitsu (hopefully!)

These Instructors are also appearing at SENI 2006 :)

The Charity by the way is The British Heart Foundation this year. I am arranging this with Heather Hunt the regional rep for BHF who can be reached on 01372 388430. If you would like to confirm this please do not hesitate to contact her.

Please remember the line up MAY change - things come up at times so I will keep up-to-date any changes that may occur where possible.

Clothing for the event - you can wear what your normally wear for training in most parts - comfortable jogging bottoms and old T shirt should suffice.

Equipment - Bic Pens need to be confirmed as yet with Mike Flanagan?? Sticks for FMA, some will be brought by Lucy and Pat. The Kuk Sool Won will also be doing some weapons as will Bagua - these will be confirmed as well :)

Parking - is free outside the Hall

Food and Drink - There is a Cafe at the Leisure Centre, hot and cold food and drinks provided. You are more than welcome to bring your own food as well. Saves missing any of the Demos as these will be happing during breaks! ;)

Changing Rooms - The Leisure Centre also has lockers, changing rooms and showers

Spectators are more than welcome to attend and will be charged a nominal fee. If you wish to take part later - you will be asked to pay the difference for the full fee.

Entry Fees

ALL ATTENDEES TAKING PART: £15.00

Spectators £3.00

Please note that ALL proceeds are going to The British Heart Foundation. All costs incurred including hire of the hall, insurance, promotion, printing and postage are being covered by "others". This will be the last year this is done...next years event will have to come out of takings...or sponsorship of course :)

Disclaimer: Please note the Organiser (Melanie) reserves the right to refuse entry. This event entails strenuous exercise, it is assumed that all participants are fit to take part and are covered by the appropriate Insurance. Changes to sessions or timings may occur.

I shall bring some suitably prepared bic pens. They'll be de-nibbed so that you don't all end up accidentally writing on each others swanky silk uniforms (ink's a bugger to get out). They'll also have a bit of padding so that you can work with them for a 45 minute session without actually wanting to stop and cry.

Is it better that we wear joggers/t-shirt than a gi or other "style-specific" suit?

Melanie
12-Mar-2006, 12:00 PM
It shouldn't make a difference to be honest moosey - I am not sure but I can't think where a Gi maybe necessary unless Tony Bailey says he would prefer people using it - I'll try and find out when I speak to the instructors :)

For what it's worth, I've been to quite a lot of the Planetjitsu (multi-style / Jiu Jitsu based) seminars, plus a few other multi-style events. It's been found for all of those that the best thing to do is wear whatever you train in normally, including (especially!) your normal/highest belt.

I missed that one, but apparently there was one seminar where it was decided that everybody would wear white belts - the result was that nobody knew how to treat everybody else and apparently it was fairly disastrous.

Even if you don't know exactly what a particular coloured belt means, generally we all know that dark=good, white=maybe not, plus if somebody's wearing white pyjamas a TKD fellow usually knows not to kick them too fast, whilst if they've got "Fred's Korean Academy" plastered over their back in gold leaf the rest of us know that throwing them hard would probably cause offence.

An excellent analysis. I couldn't agree more, just wear what you usually wear to train in.

Personally I'll be wearing white pyjama trousers (so nobody kicks me very fast) and a silk multicoloured jacket with the Korean flag on the back (so nobody tries to throw me) and those natty tai chi toggles down the front (so nobody tries to attack me at all unless its in slow motion), topped off with the usual pink tutu, make-up and matching accessories - so everyone keeps a rather respectful distance, except Robert of course, who'll still try to kiss me anyway.

Hello Melanie

How are you doing? Just newish to this forum and seen the MAP met planned for July. I was wondering what exactly was the format for the day and if anyone from Ireland was ever at the event. This forum seems level headed enough, so any meet should be a friendly one. Let me know what goes on if you can.

Hi Melanie,

I'd very much like to attend and found the post somewhere back there stating the details of the day and all that. You mention insurance... what sort of insurance will I need to train on the day? Also, do sessions need to be booked or do we just turn up at whatever takes our fancy?

I don't know whether this is relevant to the subject of insurance (for the Aikido meet, Dave's still out on how this might affect insurance) but I'm a wheelchair user (though you probably know that as the mod of the DMA forum). It's only fair to put that up front, though!

Hey there :)

The insurance I mentioned is the insurance that you should hold as a member of your class/organisation - have a read of your certificate or speak to your instructor for clarification.

As a wheelchair user...hmmmm

There are some things that you will not be able to do naturally but I shall have to speak to the instructors to see what they say. I hope you don't mind waiting to hear? I will contact you personally so not on the thread ok? It maybe a little while but I promise I won't forget :)

Hi,
I'm a wheelchair user (though you probably know that as the mod of the DMA forum). It's only fair to put that up front, though!
/ben/

For my pressure points with redundancy seminar, you are most welcome to attend - I expect that you know enough about yourself from a medical point of view to know what you are allowed (or not allowed) to do and equally know what you will allow (or not allow) others to do to you :)

One of the techniques I am going to teach (probably) is an ankle strike... Now you can't do that TO someone in a wheelchair, but if your wheelchair has those 'lovely metal foot rests' then you can certainly do it to someone else - though it will need to be done gently otherwise it will be a wheelchair users recruitment drive :) :) :)

Looking forward to seeing you.

All the best.

Robert.

Melanie,

Do we need to bring any protective gear?

The reason I ask is that I've only got a box and a gumshield, as our club provides stuff like headguards and chest protectors for sparring.

Melanie
28-Mar-2006, 08:45 AM
There shouldn't be any sparring per se - the classes have to suit complete beginners so they shouldn't be necessary.

Saying this though - there are classes (well I know definately one has) that will have restrictions (age) - I will iron these out with the instructors over the next few weeks and make it clear what they are.

Hi 'Saru1968' (and All),
Who is Keith LeBhan ?
ANSWER:
One of the nicest and most experienced martial artists you are ever likely to meet.

He has trained with more people in more arts than even a cross-training addict like me has :)

He is knowledgeable, talented, witty, and not the least bit pretentious.

He is qualified in a wide variety of styles but most times when you see him at seminars and stuff - he's just the guy who trains hard then says thanks and leaves quietly.

He is also a good mate of mine - indeed it's getting like old homecoming week - with Keith, Alan and Mike teaching and other mate's like Craig attending - no doubt so they can harass and tease poor old little me :)

Mind you - Don't be impressed by what any of the instructors know - be impressed by what you can take away from the day :) :) :)

All the best.

Robert.

Re the grappling - I am over the next few weeks going to get some idea of wht the instructors are going to teach and what recommendations they have for the class - i.e. age, clothing, weapons, etc. All of this information will be put on the poster that is going to be designed and hopefully hosted on here for you to print out :)

I haven't forgotten! Its just a bit early is all :)
