I found a place called Tiger's world that teaches Ju-Jitsu and Shootfighting among other classes. The two I mentioned are 3 classes, 2 1hour and 1 2hours. To observe is free but I haven't yet. At first glance it appears to be a good facility. But the price might be too high for my families budget - $90 a month:(. If anybody knows this place I could use your opinions, I thought I'd ask because it would take many pulled strings to get me in this place. I'm not sure if the 90 pays for all the classes or not. They have classes all week.

I've got 2 part time job offers lined up but neither of them will let me start working until business pickes up.

Thanks,
Mark

Does sound a little high, if the price covers all the classes then its not so bad, but still seems a little high.

Yeah, I thought so too. I'll probably end up taking karate or tae kwon do. Any idea what types I should look for? I've read several people mentioning shotokan karate and ITF-WTF tae kwon do. from what I read so far it seems karate would be better for me. There are a few tkd schools and i might be able to find a karate class in the recreation center near by.

Appreciate your help!

With your size, look into Skotokan, Isshinryu, Shorin Ryu, or Shorei Ryu. Those systems I know work with various techniques that would work well for you. Most Tae Kwon Do would be alot harder for your size simply due to the stressing of high kicks etc. Hapkido would really be my first suggestion though. It has the kicks, but stresses mostly locks and throws.

As a turn of events a Judo class sprouted up nearby:). Apparently the dates changed so's I couldn't find it before. I'm gonna check it out next wednesday, and i'll certainly check out what you mentioned waya.

I have one more question. Are some martial arts more expensive to teach than others? Or is it that some classes are longer than others? Judo seems the cheapest - only $25 or an 8 week program with 1 1.5 hour class a week. A flyer i have says it's sponsered by the city, and it's located in the recreation facility nearby.

There are two expenses in martial arts, admin and equipment. Admin is basically certification and membership in organisations, which a lot don't have, and hire of the premises. Equipment is fairly self-explanatory, and only applies if the instructor provides equipment for the class. Overall though schools are fairly cheap to set up and use, perhaps £50 a month for the hall hire and a one-off payment for insurance each year.
