Okay folks, the time is here...sort of.

The details of the upcoming MAP Meet in wonderful New York City have been nearly ironed out. Here's the scoop:

The When: Saturday, April 1 2006. Presentations will run beginning promptly at 12:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. There is talk of an "after-seminar, let-your-hair-down and unwind event" But details of this will need to be determined. I'm voting for a walk to Coney Island for hot dogs. Who's with me?? (For all non New-Yorkers, that's a joke, and it's pretty funny if you knew Coney Island.) ;)

The Where: Fighthouse. 122 West 27th St., N.Y. 212-807-9202 www.fighthouse.com This is absolutely the best place for us. Plenty of room, great atmosphere, and super-easy to get to. MAP wants to send an Early Thank You to Asunda and the entire Fighthouse crew for helping to pull this Meet together. Without Fighthouse, we'd be MAP'ing in the street. And that just wouldn't be good.

The What: The cost of attandance will be $20. But for that (it's pocket change, really), you get entrance to what will no doubt be described as one of the most exciting and informative seminars of the year, plus a free N.Y. MAP Meet T-Shirt, perfect for no-gi grappling, early morning runs, or just comfy, cozy sleepwear.

All you need to do is click the link below, which has detailed information regarding the location, over a dozen local hotels (thank you Kickchick for investigating), and a super-important form which must, must, must be emailed prior to event. It will be your own responsibility to arrange flight and lodging reservations.

The Who: Who's presenting? Good question. We've got: BeWaterMyFriend (yeah, that guy), Capt. Ann, ChrisFromCt, Kurohana (hopefully), lhommedieu, MattBernius, robertmap, ShenYin, and Simplicity. A formal order of events will be following. But with a line-up like that, you cannot go wrong.

The Why: If I need to tell you why you should be there, then you don't really want to be there. It seriously is an event not to be missed. If you think MAP is great online, wait until you experience it in person. :D

See you there.

-BeWater.

Well, finally!!! :D ;)

This indeed was a team effort on all accounts.

Also thanks to BeWater, Cuchulain82, firecoins, Pete Ticali and to Melanie (who I have been learning the fine art of how to organize a MAP Meet ;) )

If there are other members who may be interested in teaching at the meet..... please DO let me know!

We can add you, or depending on the number of confirmed instructors, we can add you as a "standby" for the day should any of our scheduled instructors be unable to attend.

As you can see from the Instructor listing, I need a brief description from all NYC MAP Meet Instructors of your instruction for that day.
Seminars will be 45 minutes.

If you haven't already emailed/pm'd me this please do so ASAP please!

To all interested MAP members..... do please try and get your registration forms emailed as soon as you know that you are able to attend. We would like to know how many will be in attendance that day to make final plans!

Anyway, enjoy! :)

I would also like to mention that if you are bringing others to the event that we also require a registration form for them to also be emailed.

I will keep these forms for everyone to sign in at the door!

As we get closer to the event we will have more information regarding what to bring with you to the event (re: sticks, gear etc.)

We will have target shields/pads available for use as well as mats.

I will from time to time make additions or amendments to the Instructor page on document as seminar/class descriptions are received.

Oh, no. I was talking about people who attend SUNY colleges (e.g. Binghamton, Buffalo, Oneonta, Ithica, Albany, Oswego, Syracuse), but live in NYC. But I guess if we were truly dedicated we could all drive or fly in for the weekend. After all, some people are comming from out of state. There is no good excuse, really!

When I read about walking to Coney Island for hot dogs, I thought you are out of your freaking mind! Then I read the next sentence (phew).

I'm not a "regular" on MAP (I don't post much, but I read it often), but this is not so far from my house so I think I might come.

Can we get a run-down of what's going to happen? BeWater said if we don't know then we probably shouldn't be attending, but I don't like signing up for a mystery. I gathered that there will be lessons, but what else? Any competitions for beginners? I'd still enjoy watching black-belts duke it out, but competing would be nice as well.

BeWater, do you need any help? I'm from Manhattan, so maybe I can help out with something.

Mel has given you some links to threads on a past MAP Meets .. one recently she had organized over in the UK.

The US Meet will be conducted similarly. We will have designated mat areas set up (4 possibly) with several instructions happening simulataneously....mix of weapon/and non-weapon. Each mini-seminar will be 45 min. in duration ... a total of five 45 minute classes beginning at 12:00 and ending at 5:00

There will be a 30 minute break midway

Please read thru the attached docs on original post on this thread for more details concerning this event!

We can use additional help in all areas of organizing this meet.... please pm fellow NYer BeWaterMyFriend.

Thanks

Looks interesting, but I still see no clue of competing going on. Maybe that can be a new addition to the event this time? It would be good use of the techniques we just recently learned from the 45-minute classes. :) Just a thought.

Please fill out the necessary info (name, MAP user name, email and style & rank, and T-shirt size). This also INCLUDES guests that you are bringing! (No MAP Username in this case)

Sorry Greg, but we would need a much more time in order to add competiton.

There are a few UK members slated to come.... robertmap is an instructor, and Melanie.... as well as a few more that have expressed interest but I haven't received confirmation.

I suggest letting us know your intent to come .... and then we can mark your registration as tentative. At least we can have an idea of just how many attendees we will have! A few weeks before the meet we would at least like to have an accurate number of MAPers and their guests if they so choose to bring!

I don't exactly know what you mean about organizing the "brit side of things".
You will have to book a flight and there is a list of lodging choices.
Melanie has been in touch with BAirways re: bringing sticks on board. If you have further questions I suppose Mel will hopefully & gladly answer your questions ;)

Thanks Melanie, I am interested in the visit of course, I was wondering if anybody had done any ground work for a group visit? I know you and Robert can organise just about anything MA related on mass. I've seen flights for £250 return, I was not sure about a visa or hotels. Is there a group thing likely?

Fly into NYC, the rest is really easy.
Well said! I've been helping KickChick and BeWater organize this thing because I live in the city, and the truth is that NYC easy to get the hang of. To me, this meet is an ideal entry point for a vacation to New York- an organized group of people to answer questions, help you get around, and generally just make your life easier for a day. Plan a vacation to New York and come for a few days. Go see the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Buliding, the museums, the food, and just come to have fun. April is a great time to visit- things are just starting to come alive in the city after winter. It makes me excited just thinking about it.

Anyone who doesn't come is missing out.

Anyone who would like to come but is worried about logistics should get in touch with KickChick, BeWater, or myself.

(and on your way back from Coney Island with BeWater, stop at Junior's for cheesecake! It's in Williamsburg (in Brooklyn), and using BeWater cartography, that is practically on your way!)

Greg

I don't think he was serious about going for hotdogs to Coney Island. Also, I'm pretty sure Juniors is in Fulton, not Williamsburg.

I think it's in Williamsburg, right by the clock. Actually, now that I think about it, that might be Fort Greene, because it's right there by Brooklyn Tech... no I'm not sure.

Edit- According to my co-workers, Juniors is not to far from the clock, but is on Fulton and Dekalb in Downtown Brooklyn- not Williamsburg, not Ft. Greene.

(Brooklyn, btw, is totally unintelligible to anyone who isn't from Brooklyn)

Brooklyn's a pretty big boro - are you driving in or planning on taking mass transit? The subway is pretty easy and can get you from Brooklyn to within 5 minutes walking to Fight Club - which is just south of mid-town Manhattan.

If anyone would like directions from any of the 5 boros, Long Island, etc. just pm me and I'd be happy to help out.

I am pleased to announce (after many other considerations) ... that our charity recipient for the event will be FOCUS -Friends Of Courage United Survivors, which is a project founded by Tammy Johnston (KungFuGrrrl) that uses the teachings of Chinese Martial Arts to help survivors of domestic violence as it has helped her.

Focus is a two part program. The program components include:
An ongoing one hour twice per week Tai Chi Chuan class where the students learn Tai Chi Chuan, Chi Gong, and Lain Gong.
Based on participation and ability. the student will be graduated into the second phase where the child students will learn Shaolin Kung Fu and the women students will learn Internal Martial Arts. Proceeds from our event will go to further this project.

Their web site is http://www.focus101.net

If you are planning on coming to the NYC MAP Meet and have an item to donate for a raffle on that day, please pm me!

Also please read KungFuGrrrl's thread here http://www.martialartsplanet.com/forums/showthread.php?t=45575 regarding a logo for FOCUS. Hopefully, we can add the FOCUS logo to our new MAP logo to the event t-shirts in time!

The meet is less than 10 weeks away !

I've done all that I can up to this point to offer all our MAP members the details regarding the instructors and their programs for the day. As BeWater mentioned... if there is anything I failed to mention here, PLEASE so that we can avoid last minute problems, do ask!

I would also like to mention that the Fighthouse is open for lodging the night of the event. Please call them at (212) 807-9202. You will need a pillow and sleeping bag and the rate is very inexpensive. You will be required to mail in a 50% deposit 2 weeks prior and balance the day of event. There is a curfew of 11:30 ;)

Again... please do take the time to mail in your registrations so that you can get in quickly the morning of the event and avoid standing in line! We can then quickly stamp you in after you pay and sign the waiver.

Emailing those registrations also give us an indication of how many participants we will have for the day and to ensure that we have enough equipment to supply.

Also indicate how many guests will be attending with you!

If you find you cannot open the docs for any reason.... let me know and I will convert them to simpler test for you and email them to you!

I've combined the details of the event into an RTF/txt doc to this post for download for those that cannot open the others :)

I noticed a question in this thread about the need for a visa for UK citizens to visit the US.

You do not need a visa if you plan to enter the US as a tourist and stay 90 days or less. The UK is one of the countries that the US recognizes under its "visa waiver" program. All you need to do is show proof that you intend to return to the UK within 90 days (your return ticket will suffice) and have a valid UK passport.

You will be admitted to the US in something called "VW/T status (visa waiver - tourist). This will be stamped or written on a US immigration form called Form I-94W, which will be stapled into your passport when you clear Customs and Immigration at your point of arrival.

You cannot engage in any type of employment or receive any expense reimbursements while in the US in WT status (not that most of you would be intending to, anyway...).

If you want to engage in anything business-related while here (MA-related, for example), you should pursue entering the US under VW/B (visa waiver - business) status. If you enter in that status, there are some limited business-related activities that you can engage in, but they are fairly circumscribed. If any of you are interested in pursuing that route, please post here or PM me, and I'll be happy to send you more details rather than bore the life out of the membership at large.

Hope this helps... best of luck to all of you UK visitors.

(btw, I do visa / immigration work for foreign college students and faculty as part of my job, so this info is reliable.)

Well,my form has been emailed in,and I've got a Jackson saved away for admission.I'm wondering:

Would a plastic toy/costume prop dagger do for knife demos,or will a metal training dagger be needed?
Can you give any figures on how many have confirmed they'll be there or at least have sent in their forms online?
Any clues on where we'll end up for dinner later?I suspect it'll need to be a big place.

I will ask our instructors who are covering knife defense/tactics to advise us on that Zealot

As far as confirmed attendees .... we have had quite a few registrations emailed in so far, but the event is still 2 months away.

We'll be sure to keep you posted on what's happening afterwards! :D

A wooden dowel approximately 7/8" to 1" in diameter and 12" in length will suffice for the espada y daga class that I'm teaching, and is generally good for most knife training - although for some disarms (and certainly for Pekiti Tirsia "clips" and pressure cuts etc.) a metal trainer is better. Those of you bringing metal trainers through airports would be well-advised to pack them in their baggage (not carry-on) along with a registration form, description of classes, etc. from the MapMeet NYC to explain why it's there. You may also wish to declare what you're bringing before you get to the airport. If you bring a dowel it's a good idea to round the edges of the dowel with some sandpaper: this keeps people from getting marked up by the edges during training.

I would be happy to supply dowels for my class once I know how many have signed up.

Best,

Steve Lamade

I hope you can. I still haven't bought the round for your dan test on my birthday. :)

Are you doing a Hapkido seminar?

Well sort of. I will be doing a seminar on "Power from The Center" which discusses and shows people how to get the maximum power just by using your "center" or manipulating another's. This is key when taking down a resistant opponent without having to strike them or attempt to fake them out. As you know, we use this all the time in Hapkido, but other styles use it too to different degrees.

Take care. :)

I got word from "Kick" that if people would like to train with aluminum trainers, but do not have one, I will have a few on sale at the meet.

I sell the trainers for $35.00 each, but they will be on sale for $30.00 at the event and 20% will go towards the NYC MAP Meet's charity, FOCUS.

Here's a link to a page with a couple pics of them...

I lived in NYC for years. The train station is fine; the bus station--not so much. So clearly, I am afraid of you. After a couple years of banter and machismo behind a keyboard, I will lose all anonimity. It's not the face-to-face meeting that scares me; it's the foot-to-face round house when I forget I'm not invincible. As always, I playing. Sort of. Not really. Okay, I am.

Unfortunately due to conflicts with his schedule , Matt Bernius is unable to instruct at the meet.

However, we do have an addition to make for the event. He is a friend of KungFuGrrrl and I am very pleased that he is both able to attend and instruct at this event!

Manuel Marquez has been in the martial arts since 12 years old. Now he has trained in the arts for 35 years, during those years he studied different styles as in Tae Kwon Do, Tang Soo Do, Shotokan, Northern Shaolin, Southern Five Animals, Yang, Chen, Wu Tai Chi Chuan, Northern Seven Star & Tai Chi Praying Mantis martial arts.

He currently holds rank as a 7th Degree Black Sash “Shifu” under Ark Yuey Wong and Liang Kam Yuen who was the choreographer of the original Kung Fu series on TV besides each having a part on the television show.

He has trained directly with the Masters of each art from China and visits different areas of China with each teacher. He lived in the Henan temple of Shaolin near the Wu Tang mountain in China to study.

Manuel is the owner and chief instructor of Shaolin Temple Kung Fu School, in California.

Shifu Marquez' details of instruction for the day have been added to attachments...

As KickChick knows a deadly combination of too much work and not enough money have conspired to make the NY MAP Meet a no-go for me :(

I WILL get to NYC again - soon I hope - and when I do I'll let MAP members know and hopefully those in the area that want to can come and say hello, we might even find a park or somewhere and get to play - will obviously depend on what time of year I make it to NYC - the idea of playing in snow (how deep was it this year) does not appeal to me :)
[And yes I know - I'm a wimp :) ]

It is on 7th Avenue and 2 minutes from Fight house I believe.... but I will have directions printed out for everyone! You find your own way home safely though ;)

Thank you to firecoins for setting us up with such a nice place .... Cheers!

Be sure to stick around becasue firecoins has agreed to do some stand-up comedy for us later on ... (perhaps BeWater would like to join in! ;) )

I want to make mention that T-shirts are on order. If you haven't sent in a registration form (shame on you!) ... now your odds of getting a NYC MAP Meet t-shirt are slim to none as I have only ordered only a few extra. You can fight over them ! :D

I will also have the Order of Events finalized soon and will post a link to that so you can print it out .

I will be putting together an FAQ ("what should I bring...wear...etc") and post it up here as well!

As far as video..... we'll have to see.

The photographer I had asked to come has declined due to the fact that he was nominated to the London MA Hall of Fame and travel plans are on hold.

I've had varying feedback from our instructors on videotaping the event. One of the reasons being that it is disruptive during the instruction. I hope to do some videoing and possibly another? .... taking an overview of the event and before & after.

No if's, and's or but's about it.... I would like a group photo immediately following the last instruction of the day.

We'll probably have lots to contribute to the MAP Pub thread after April 1st as well ;)

Hi... I've been a lurker here in these forums for a few weeks now and because I live in New York, I was thinking of attending the event.

I have a slight problem though: I saw the Registration and Liability Release on the pdf file and noticed that I have to specify my rank and my style. The problem is that I haven't formally taken up any martial arts at all, just having a moderately deep interest in them is all I really do. (This is why I haven't posted at all, sadly; no formal instruction)

Does this automatically prevent me from being able to attend the Meet? As disappointed as I would be to hear that I would have to be turned away due to my formal inexperience, I can understand that safety through knowledge is what comes first and foremost.

Good News!

I have added two instructors to the event.

Marc Mays has been studying martial arts for 6 years under the instruction
of Master Manuel Marquez who will be instructing Tai Chi Northern Praying Mantis. Marc has studied Northern Shaolin, Northern Seven Star & Tai Chi Praying Mantis as well as Chen, Yang and Wu Tai Chi Chuan.
Marc is an assistant instructor at the Shaolin Temple Kung Fu School in Lomita, California.

Marc will instruct on the use of Chi Sau and how it pertains to training combat techniques. Chi Sau is a method of training the body for sensitivity, specifically to sense the speed, power and direction of an opponent's attack. Proficiency depends on the practitioner's ability to yield an opponent's force and redirect an attack. Training will start with "water" level and move up to fully combative Chi Sau.

Also ...

One of Fighthouse's trainers Steve Strickman, has expressed an interest in doing a mini Kettlebell class later in the afternoon schedule. He will be covering basic kettlebell use and how it relates to MA training. The class size will be limited: 2 groups of 3 people and he has kettlebells for both males & females ;)

So now I have to redo the schedule.... so bear with me and I will have it up by the end of the week!

By the way, I'll be travelling ninja light, only a carry on, and the airport won't let me bring any training weapons (not even my rubber knife). For anyone that's interested in what I'll be doing, you just need a blindfold.

The t-shirts are solely for those who are attending the event and have pre-registered as I had posted earlier.
They are specifically designed with new logo date of the event & location and charity details. As I said I have a few extras for those who have not pre-registered and show up the day of the event.

I am currently working on an official MAP tee shirt for the site and that will be available soon. ;)

As far as donations for charity.... we have a silent auction planned for the afternoon with some items that will be up for bid. Winning bidders to be announced at the end of the day.

There are some instructors that do have merchandise for sale that day. They have been gracious to donate a percentage of the proceeds to FOCUS.

If you want to meet up on Friday night . I will be in the village bar hopping. If you are over 21 and would like to join me. Here are the places I will be visiting.

8pm Peculiar Pub. Nice bar on Bleekcer Street. Might head to Terra Blues next door. It has top bkues guitarists next door.

9:30pm CBGB's This place was the starting place of Punk Rock in the US its slated to close in Oct for good. It located on Bowery 2 blocks north of Houston St (pronounced How-ston, not like the city in Texas). If anyone wants to visit it on Friday, I am game)

12 - Hogs an Heffers. This bar is like the one in Coyote Ugly except the bar Coyote Ugly stole the idea from these guys. This is a biker bar thats really cool to non bikers. Very Safe! but the cute bartenders will yell at you.

Other suggestion for people not coming with me...

The Upright Citizens Brigade - NYC improv home. They had a Comedy Central show. The actual troupe no longer performs there but their students do and many are hilarious. They are like black belts in long form comedic improv. www.ucbtheater.com Get tickets now if you want to go as their weekend shows sell out easily. It cheap though $8 only and no drink requirments since its a theater.

Comedy Cellar - McDougal Street in the village. Also ill be sold out. NYC top stand up. Colin Quinn is there all the time. Seinfeld filmed Comedian here. Greg Girado is there alot as well as other headliners. GO! Yo can catch up with me sometime in the night since I will be around this club.

Well, it is difficult to say. Many of the instructors are bringing guests/students ... I've had a few registrations emailed, but mostly members saying they will indeed be there.

From what I can come up with we have over 50 definites.... 60 - 80 would be ideal.

We will have 3 mats going simultaneously. I've got a weapon/TMA /groundfighting-standup-tactics class ... selected for each session. In place of weapons in 2 sessions is weights & kettlebells (but in the hands of some members they are weapons! ;) )

We have a few members coming from the UK ... Mel and a couple of her friends as well as Alan Platt.

So, last night I swung by Fighthouse to take a look-see. I figured I'd toss a few pictures, so you guys can have an idea of what to expect, and where you should end up.

The front of the building. It's #122, the doorway is next to the red awning, and under the blue scaffolding:
http://img106.imageshack.us/img106/2803/fighthousefront2017tu.jpg

When you enter the building, you'll take an elevator to the second floor. When the elevator doors open, you still need to open the door (either of those 2 doors with the circle windows on them.) The third door, on the right, is the stairway. P.S., that hot chick standing between the doors is my gal. You get to meet her Saturday too.

Just a word to those who have NOT registered ......

If you have not sent in a registration form or at least pm'd/email me your intent to be there..... I request that you please do so ASAP.

We NEED an approximate count of how many will be there in attendance that day.

You see I have been informed that we CANNOT exceed 60 participants unless we add on to the room we have now and that would consist of redirecting a scheduled class that will be going on that same day.

Also if you have not registered and do plan on coming and have contacted me.... we may have a few extra MAP t-shirts available for sale that day. (first-come basis!) ---- T-shirts were free and ordered for those that emailed their registrations already with size of t-shirt requested.

Thank you Chris for those pics!

I will be going to FH this week to sign our rental agreement for the day and to plan the set up of the event.... hopefully by then I will have some more RSVP's ;)

I will be posting the Order/Schedule of events this week ....

Again if you plan on going .... we NEED for you to let me know ASAP !

I really would hate to turn you away at the door :)

I doubt anyone was coming to see me at any of these locations. That being said, I will be at any of them. I have scored myself a comedy gig this Friday at the Dupulex. The 9pm show has a $10 cover and 2 drink minimum. If you want something to do in New York the night before, you can PM me if you want to go and I'll send you the exact location.

How do we stand on cameras? I'll have my own digital camera (for still pictures) for my presentation and some personal snapshooting. If I remember, I'll try to bring my mini video camera, but it uses a tape and isn't digital, so sharing the images may be difficult at best.

So, if you want to immortalize this event forever, and turn every bit of martial arts madness and instruction into a Kodak moment, don't forget to bring a camera. I'm expecting the lunch break to be a gigantic barrage of flash bulbs and cameras going off. A real paparazzi moment.

If you do decide to have another MAP meet next year, please let us all know what we can do to help, even if we don't live there!

Also, I have some experience in planning conventions (for an organization I used to belong to), and if you have a "formula" that works, and want to repeat it, it's generally a lot easier the second time around. :)

Was an excellent day - got to meet some lovely folk and train with them. Well done Debbie.

02-Apr-2006, 04:45 PM
Woohoo! Excellent time had by all :)

Let me explain...

I arrived at about 1100am and was greeted by KickChick and her daughter - Mister K was there too :) We did the obligatory "Can't believe we have finally met!" speech and then went on to look at everything on offer - T shirts, stickers, fridge magnets and programmes! I took one of everything :D

Then quickly got changed and came out to the practise area. It was very well laid out and with notices stating who was in what area. I met with several instructors and warmed up.

I decided to do the Tai Chi Praying Mantis with Manual Marquez first of all. He was so fast and sure and a wonder to watch. I was training with Aliatheknife (Jane). Although she has only posted a few times she knows her stuff ladies and gents! She had me in fits during the class - but I remained as orderly as possible I assure you. It was quite a bit different from what I was expecting I have to say. The only Tai Chi I have ever heard of and seen is basic movements, moving really slowly - so I have to say I was very pleasently surprised :)

I then went on to Eskrima with Steve Lamade. This time I was paired up with Capt Ann (Ann Regan). Steve was fab - really enjoyed this class. Felt gutted it didn't go on longer. Ann is a formidable opponent - very strong techniques and hard hitter - the swelling has gone down now Ann (only kidding! I had nothing wrong with me at all). He showed us a kata and several techniques and we managed to meld them all together quite comfortably.

It was lunch after that and I spent some time talking to Manuel - he said he had spent a year and a half with the Shaolin Monks in a bid to immerse himself in his training. I have to say that sounds like a wonderful opportunity and his commitment and training shows in his class. He also has managed to find the elixir of youth in his training as he explained he had been training for 26 years and he barely looks over 30! Lucky man :)

I then went onto Hapkido with Chris from CT. What a personable and charming man. He veritably bounced all over the mat when we did his class. He said that Hapkido could be described as a lazy mans art and explained why. They attempt to do all of their techniques using their centre and manouvour their body in such a way that they are using their full body weight against yours. Once again I was paired up with Jane - she is a deceptfully powerful little minx - thanks to her - my arms look beaten up! I hope I did the same (hehehehe!) (joke) :)

I finally ended up doing Kumdo with Capt Ann. This class was quite small but it meant we were able to have her full attention. We were given Bokken(I think they were ?) and I actually found them quite heavy. Shows how much of a wmp I am I guess. Managed to get most of the basic techniques down to pat and was whipping me sword about all over the place - mostly in the right direction! Then we went onto moving a feather - no seriously! This was a way of trying to control the sword by stopping the blade just above the feather and making it "dance". Tragically my feather managed to get quite butchered whilst doing this so I didn't go onto the "snuffing out a candle" technique that the others did. It was winderful to watch them though - the control they showed so quickly was a treat to see. We then went to chopping paper - not quite the silk scarf you see in the Bodyguard but it impressed me all the same. Anne hung up a clothes line and taped folded newspaper to it and we expertly chopped it with the sword (well some of us did - Hahaha - I didn't - but heck I tried!). My arms killed me after this and my shoulders still ache today but I wouldn't have done anything different.

Some people left after the class but about 10-12 went off to the pub afterwards. Thats when we got to do some real chatting and wathing the UFC of course! It was a chance to absorb the day and think about the next one. I know I would definately come back to another one. It was well organised and offered many classes I would not normally get the opportunity to see or attend. Everybody who attended had exactly the right attitude and wanted to get stuck in and try something new. I found everyone realy friendly and helpful and it was great to put some faces to some names.

Thanks Debbie - you out did yourself - like to see you beat this next year ;)

By the way - the T shirts are awesome! They are so professionally done.

Alrighty-roo, the whole experience was...awesome. Where to start, where to start?? Well, I arrived at Fighthouse at 12:15 (the way I figure it, since I'm geographically one of the closest to the place, it would make "too much" sense for me too arrive early. Sorry KickChick. :o ) My gal and I arrived, shook some real-life hands of people I've only known online, and I quickly got setup for the first session of the day.

Session 1 - My presentation (http://www.martialartsplanet.com/forums/showthread.php?p=823470#post823470). Went great, because I had some great students. I reviewed pretty much everything I had planned on discussing. The Full Contact Twist was in full effect, and was very well received, as was the Turkish Get-up. My gal got some great video of this, I just need to figure a way to share it.

Session 2 - Attended the Chi Sau presentation by Marc Mays. Very nice stuff, gave a great new outlook on sensitivity and awareness. I've never done much Chi Sau work, but have always been facinated by it. This was an outstanding instruction on the Water style, as well as the Fire style.

Session 3 - Kettlebells, with a Fighthouse instructor. They've got a certified KB instructor running classes there on the weekends. This was a nice review of the basics, which in never a bad thing. He did comment that my girlfriend had very good technique. Hmm, she must have a good trainer or something.

Session 4a - I went to Mister K's Bujinkan seminar. Top notch stuff. Started off strong with some blindfold work (p.s. - any of you who heard a body thumping to the floor during this time...yeah, that was me, getting tossed about by a Muay Thai guy. "No RJ, you cannot clinch and knee." ;) ) Followed by some very, very interesting eyes-closed circle work on sense and trusting your instincts.

Session 4b - My gal, Sande/BlackBeltCutie, went to CaptAnn's Kumdo presentation. (The following is as narrated to me, by Sande) "Ann is a great instructor. She used good examples of proper sword handling, like the blowing out the candle, and making the feather move. And cutting through the hanging paper gave you more confidence in what you're learning. Now, I want to learn more about the art." :)

Random thoughts:
- I never realized how much Mr. K looks like Dave Draiman (http://img378.imageshack.us/img378/5575/daviddraiman726nj.jpg), lead singer of my favorite band in the universe, Disturbed.

- Thank you Ann, for the extend-o-lighter. It'll come in handy when it's fireplace weather again.

- Highlight of the after-meet: Cuch getting busted for staring at some Capoeria girls. Mister K was right. Ha! :p

- Fightcoins' stand-up routine was unfortunately interrupted by poor timing of the waitresses, however, it was good stuff and I have to say I never hope the meet his version of "the truth."

- It was great speaking with you all, and meeting you "for real". I hope to see you all again, soon. Which brings me to...

- When and where is the next US MAP Meet!?! KickChick did an extremely fabulous job in getting things organized for this one, and set the bar high, for sure. So, how about it. Maybe someone on the Left Coast has some ideas? Or, do we hold out for NY MAP Meet, Round 2? :D

Wow, from what I'm hearing, it sounds like I would've made a real fool out of myself there though, with like almost everyone exhibitting refined movement and control. But the point is that I at least would've learned stuff and that's why I wanted to attend so bad...

Yeah, till next time I guess.

What can I say that hasn't already been said?

First, I'll second everyone else's comments - KickChick, you ROC!! You were absolutely amazing getting everything organized and making it run smoothly. The location was great, the set-ups were perfect for the different arts, the schedule kept moving, and we were all left with only one complaint: why did it have to end so soon?

It was an absolute blast getting to meet so many of you in person. Mr. K, always good to meet someone from 'the old neighborhood'. BeWater, thanks again for volunteering to play 'sherpa' and packing in all the swordly gear I had shipped to you, since I couldn't bring it in on the train. ChrisfromCT, you are a scholar and a gentleman! Melanie, sorry again about missing the stick in the eskrima seminar (* :o * ouch * :o *)

For those who couldn't attend, I HIGHLY recommend you check out BeWater's thread (http://www.martialartsplanet.com/forums/showthread.php?p=823470#post823470). His was the first session I attended, and worth the entire trip. After all the discussion on FCT's and Turkish Getups, it was great to see them, then to practice proper technique with someone knowledgeable right there to correct mistakes and offer pointers.

Next, I went to Steve Lamade's session on Eskrima. It was a great introduction to the art, and provided some useful techniques, even for people like me who had never done any stick work. Basics of grip, aim, attack points, rhythm, blocking, and footwork were all included. GOT to find me a local class!!

Next, the sessions broke for lunch. Several people brought healthy food. I slipped out to the local McDonald's for some FLS's (food-like substances) before returning for the afternoon classes. Next Meet, definitely need a class on nutrition for middle-aged junkfood addicts.

After lunch, I attended ChrisfromCT's hapkido seminar on 'power from the center'. Chris was a great guy to meet - terrific sense of humor, lively instruction, knowledgeable in his art, and just plain fun to be around. From what I understand, "Power from the Center" is part of a series of seminars he regularly does, so if you ever get a chance to see him, TAKE the opportunity!

Last class I attended was something on swords, but I don't really know what was covered because I wasn't paying much attention :D.

The After-Session event was also great. Good time to socialize with Mister K, Melanie, Cuchalain, KickChick (as well as husband Mr. Kick and daughter KickChicklette), Zealot, Sue, Sande, BeWater, Firecoins, and others. Lamb was excellent, and the Garlic Mashed Potatoes were enough to keep vampires at bay for the next three weeks.

Whoever plans the next one has a tough act to follow, but I hope someone takes the challenge - count me in for attendance.

I had a seriously great time. Especially with both Mantis and Hapkido instructors. My wrists are still killing me from so much variable Chin Na applications. But it was the best feeling I've had in a long time.

I would definitely like to do this again very soon.

Hey, does anyone have any pictures and videos from the event. I wanna' add them to my library.

I love you all and thank you for putting together such a wonderful event!

Debbie,
Outsiding job! :) You made things work smooth like silk. I didn't get a chance to tell your MA Teacher thanks for letting us use his pads, so please if you could pass the word for me. I had an awesome time, everyone was great. This one is going to be hard to beat. What I found to be unique, was all of the Martial arts that was under one roof at the same time. It was a great experience for my students, my wife had a great time, so did my two other students and myself. I really like NY city and all the different people there, what a melting- pot. I just wish I could have came to the dinner afterwards, but because our schedule wouldn't allow for it.

I got a chance to talk to Tammy from "Focus", all I can say what a wonderful women she is and what her goals are......God is smiling on you Tammy now and now its your time to shine. I told her anytime she needs my help for her program, just call and I will try to make it........I believe whole heartedly in making a difference in the world I live-in, this is my goal as a martial artist......I know the arts that I teach is a little bit aggressive, but this is how I balance it out, by helping out a great cause......Sort of like YIN/YANG I guess....Thanks for the experience and all of the instructor's, people that came......Good training and good luck in the future everyone!

Peace, Love and Soul,

I enjoyed working with Shen Yin during the Mantis class as my partner. I have bruises on my arm from it. Made me wish the Sifu lived in NY. It will be hard to retain everything I learned in this section because I got so much that relates to arts I study.

Did the escrima class right after that and enjoyed that. I have always wanted to do FMA but never really had the chance. MY dojo teaches stick fighting on a very limited basis and there are no other local dojos teaching it. During Escrima I observed the Chi So class which I wished I could have done and also the groundfighting class. I wished I could have done thoses as well.

I also enjoyed the Budo Taijitu. Didn't realize I was raiing my hand when he wasn't around.

I also had an excellent time this weekend. I helped KC get things orgranized for the weekend, and I must admit it exceeded my expectations. I didn't know what to think when someone said "hey, let's all together in real life." However, not only were most people normal, but you all turned out to be downright fun. I attended BeWater's exercise session (really helpful- a few new moves, better ways to train the old ones), Illhomedu's Escrima session (great stuff- a totally different style of FMA than my usual pekiti-tirsa), Chris from CT's push from the center (he is incredibly peppy), and, finally, Mister K's Bujikan seminar (and, to answer the obvious question- yes, I did make the requisite number of "ninja-death" jokes and Mister K took them in good humor. He then proceeded to grab-and-lock me for the entirety of Chris' seminar, so in the end I guess I got what I deserved.)

More random thoughts, and responses:

Session 4a - I went to Mister K's Bujinkan seminar. Top notch stuff. Started off strong with some blindfold work (p.s. - any of you who heard a body thumping to the floor during this time...yeah, that was me, getting tossed about by a Muay Thai guy. "No RJ, you cannot clinch and knee." ;) )
Yeah, that "Muay Thai guy" was me. I'd be blindfolded and K would say something like "use this time just to feel where your opponent is" and I would think, "I feel like I want to hit him." So, every once in a while, I did! :D Followed by a thai throw. It worked out well for me. As a side note, BeWater has very nice break falls!

-Again, Kudos to KickChick/Debbie. No matter what name you call her, she did an outstanding job organizing. She didn't even do one of the seminars  You made it great for everyone KC!

-Kudos also to the UK types like Alan Platt, Melanie, and Stump for making the trek. I know that the MAP meet wasn't the sole focus of your trip, but it was still pretty great that you made it.

-Firecoins can tell a mean joke until the waitress puts food in front of him. He was brave enough to attempt standup at a restraunt, but the poor guy just couldn't catch a break- halfway through his routine, his food arrived.

-Stump, I still can't believe that you, an Irishman, would come to the US and drink Coors Light and like it! I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.

-The San Miguel Escrima session was really great. I train pekiti-tirsa kali and it this was my first attempt doing a different style of FMA. Good times! Thanks Steve.

-Mister K, despite my ninja/bujikan cracks, your blindfold exercise was proven valid after the meet, as BeWater alluded to.

Highlight of the after-meet: Cuch getting busted for staring at some Capoeria girls. Mister K was right. Ha! :p
So, the full story is this: Mister K's session was in the final time slot. We finished up and I was sitting in the gym resting, gathering my thoughts for a minute, etc. At the end of our time, a capoeria team was filtering in to train. The team was largely comprised of young, fit, flexible females who were dressed in uniforms of sleeveless undershirts (aka: wifebeaters) and tight white pants. Being a 23 year old male, I took notice of these practicioners immediately. I was enthralled by their... ummm... technique :o Anyway, just as my thoughts were becoming something less than Christian, one of the girls looked over an caught me gawking. I was given the appropriate scowl and Mister K's entire point was validated.

In sum, a good time was had by all. I would love to do it again. I am ready for NYC redeux. CT might also be an option, and the left coast is cool too.

Thanks again all,

Cuch

Yeah, I have to say that my awareness for every martial art in general was broadened by ten-fold after this meet. Especially in regards to the Hapkido instruction; I wasn't aware that they concentrated so much on Chin Na that way. Very, very nice.

Absolutely. As a matter of fact, there really isn't any reason not to take the momentum from this and try to meet up every so often. This goes for all NYC-area folks. Should we try to get together and play every month or so? Every other month? I'm just throwing out ideas here. I know that there were enough people in NYC, CT, and Long Island that we could do it regularly. It would probably not be in Fighthouse every time ($$$) but someone must have space somewhere. Again, I'm babbling, but I had a good time and maybe we should try to run with it.

(Can we invite ourselves over to BeWater's garage to throw around kettlebells? I'm sure he'd love that  )

Btw Shin, did you get any numbers? I saw you talking to those capoeira girls, and even if you aren't interested it sounds like me and Firecoins are ;) :D

not much in the way of brawlin. There was one of the resident fighthouse BJJ instructors giving MMA lessons in the ring on my arrival. He has faught amateur MMA fights and another BJJ group giving lesson on Mat 3 had to be kicked off.

I am already trying to get a NYC MA group together from non Map members on Sundays after 3. the 1 person I am in talks with wants to grapple and do it 2pm which is before I can get there.

Things I would like to do are Chi Sao, Chi Na and grappling/BJJ. And Push Hands.

Unfortunately, no, unless you count my round-kneeing and turning BeWater. There was a difference of opinion about round-style kicks and straight kicks that got heated, but it was very polite.

There was, however, a lot of locking/throwing/ other stuff that thaiboxers don't do. I found myself in the strange world of discussing "rear naked chokes", and other pseudo-erotic sounding techniques.

I regret not being able to come instruct, but my duties at work called  Sounds like you guys had quite a blast. There is a large conference room at a nearby Sheraton Hotel(overlooking a lake), that's often used for tournaments. I'm sure I could pull some strings and see about renting it out. I know everybody just got back home, but let me know what you think about MAP Meet #2 :)

Let's try and keep the momentum going!!!

You need to start early and gather as much help from your instructors that you can. Fortunately for the NYC Meet, we had an awesome bunch of instructors ....eager to help me in any way they could.... they made organizing this meet a piece of cake (chocolate on chocolate ;) )

If you are seriously interested in MAP Meet #2 in the Missouri area.... I suggest you promote some interest with a thread. See what members and instructors are interested.

A Meet is not that difficult to host & organize (I can say that now that it is all over! )

I will say that before I taught, I was missing out on things I never in my wildest dreams would have experienced. There is definetely a warm feeling that comes over us as instructors, when we turn somebody into a success story. By success story, let me provide an example. A young boy who walks in with no confidence and 0 self esteem, and leaves years later a confident man. There is much more to martial arts than physical application :)

Here is a link to the hotel i'm thinking about hosting the possible meet in...

http://www.sheratonwestport.com/

Beautiful hotel, great service, and central to some great resturants and nightlife...The picture on the homepage shows the lake. The center building with the six windows overlooking the lake, would be our entire room. What would you guys think of a 2 day meet? A 1 day seminar, and perhaps a tournament on the next day? Some invents would include breaking, full contact sparring, light sparring, MMA, etc...I believe that with proper planning this might be a possiblity. Grand prize for the winner of a main event would be a cruise or trip. With some publicity, and proper funding, it could really be a major gathering, and would surely literally put MAP on the map :D . My only concern is in fact having enough people.

In my personal opinion, if there was a tournament. It would take away from the MAP Meet. What was great about this 1st North American MAP Meet was, everyone empty there cup, to taste some other form of tea. This is one of the most important thing that I seen at the Meet with all the different MA ist and Specially the Instructors, beside helping out such a noble cause for "FOCUS".......I feel a tournament would change that spirit. I think if its going to be two days, the extra day would better serve its purpose, exchanging Ideals........Maybe thats just me...though!

I have to concur with Simplicity on that. You see that is what these MAP Meets are all about.

As I noted in our meet pamphlet...
"We brought together a dozen instructors who are not only skilled in their styles but also embrace the MAP community purpose.
MAP Meets are a physical manifestation of this online community.

All MAP members and guests are invited to attend and learn that all martial arts represent different expressions of the same objectives, principles, and philosophies. We can all learn and improve by sharing our skills, enjoy the camaraderie of fellow martial artists while benefiting a charitable organization.

There will be several simultaneous 45 minute seminars being taught throughout the afternoon where participants may select from three options -- you choose the instruction that’s right for you!"

Seems to me you have quite an extraordinary weekend planned for this and I surely commend you on the undertaking.

If you read the accounts and reviews of all the past MAP Meets ... they all follow a similar outline. (at least I tried to follow that with this NY meet by conferring with Melanie)

Mel had also sent me a DVD of the last meet and that is the spirit I wanted to see at this event. I believe we caught that spirit! :)

Why not have informal sparring instead of a full blown tournament?

KickChick
05-Apr-2006, 10:08 PM
Informal sparring is fine as long as everyone has proof of insurance and depending on the venue they may require special insurance on top of that.

Believe me I know & Melanie as well .... we've looked into this!

I walked around FH the entire afternoon with my fingers & toes crossed hoping that there wouldn't be any injuries (although we had everyone sign a liability and release waiver I still was concerned)

The poor guy had a splint the length of his hand from a recent (non-MAP) injury. Someone was demonstrating arm/joint locks for takedowns, and to avoid break-falling on his injured hand, he decided to lead with his forehead. No mat. Hardwood floor.

Not everyone saw it happen, but everyone in all directions heard it happen.

That reminds me of a similar story that my old boss had. He was teaching a student and joking around with him(Although a great martial artist as far as skill goes, he thought way too highly of himself), and was talking about what great control he has. He fakes a punch to the students face and follows it up with a kick to the groin. He didn't mean to make contact, but the "thud" could be heard throughout the studio. After about a 10 minute "freezing" process, the student came out of it and contiuned the lesson. Ironically the exact same thing happened to him the next time. I don't recall seeing him too many more times after...

@Kenpoguy

Yikes! That's one heck of a way to treat your paying customers.

An audible thud from a groin kick- another reason I wear the proper athletic equipment to every thaiboxing/kali class I attend. There's nothing like trying to teach an inside cut kick to somone who hasn't ever trained a MA and doesn't really have great control...

Re: Informal Sparring

I think this is a great idea. We do a lot of sparring at my gym, but usually it is technical sparring- light, quick, and focused on working one or two techniques. I usually get the most out of situations like this, where your opponent is actively resisting you.

Thank you KC for all your efforts, it was a wonderful experience meeting everybody and participating in the event. It was a really good day for me.

Gallery looks great. If I wasn't in my PGCE or heading into my NQT year, I would probably be up for part-organising one over here if enough people would be interested. Despite my complete lack of qualifications, I could no doubt run a section on lifting or bodyweight techniques or whatever people want to see. I would definitely be up for doing that if someone else organised the whole thing. I remember the suggestion of a Northern England one but that seemed to disappear...

Man I am so bummed that I couldn't go to the MAP NYC meet, but I had a tournament in Huntsville Alabama that same day. :( The pictures and stories sound great, and I can tell I missed a special day indeed.

Sounds like you guys had quite a blast. If anybody is interested, i'd be willing to work on hosting a MAP meet here (In St. Louis, Missouri) in July or August. There is a large conference room at a nearby Sheraton Hotel(overlooking a lake), that's often used for tournaments. I'm sure I could pull some strings and see about renting it out. I know everybody just got back home, but let me know what you think about MAP Meet #2 :)

Wow that would be awesome! I was hoping that there might be a MAP meet in the south or MidWest that I could reach in a days drive. Count me in! (BTW, I agree with the others about the tourney though, cool idea, but probably not right for this occasion).

And to KickChick, and everyone who put the NYC thing together, you should all give yourselves a big pat on the back!!!

NYC MAP meet. Chris was the instructor, I was the dummy:

Chris from CT-"See- with this technique, no pain! If I want a little pain-"

Me-"Awww hell."

Chris from CT-"-I just do this"

 I never touched him! <Deb, quick, burn the tape.> :)

I'd never call you a dummy. :) I appreciate you, Mister K and Shen Yin offering up appendages for me to gnaw on.

I am so pissed I missed this. Just moved so I've been running around like a chicken without a head trying to get everything done. I was hoping to at least stop by and say hi but lost track of time. Looks like everyone had a great time. I expect more pictures and hopefully some movies of the day! I'll definately make it to NYCMAP Part Deux!! :)

I have a few more pics to post (... just waiting on my daughter for those that she took ;) )

As far as the video. As I mentioned, I did manage to capture most of the highlights of the afternoon however, I haven't a clue as to how to convert this digital video to proper format and make it available for all of you to see!

If someone can show me how, I can post a link to it.

Hey Chris, I say we get a mini MAP Meet together in CT this summer ! :D -- I'm sure Mario is game as well as a few of our NY MAPers.

Oh, it was my pleasure! Like I kept telling Mister K, I don't know how to do any of that stuff; when was the last time you saw thaiboxers training wristlocks? We do some lock-stuff in FMA, but usually only so we know how to not get locked up. But I digress...

I would take the train out to CT- it's a piece of cake. Ideally it would be somewhere in MTA-land *cough*NewHaven*cough* but if not, something can be arranged.

I would maybe like to host a meet in the Midwest (Southeast Michigan). If I was to go that route. I would like to donate half the money to St. Judes Children's Hospital (for cancer research) and half to Tammy of "FOCUS"........

Just seen the pics, looked like a great event. :)
My praise and congrats to you all for doing something for charity like that, and to the organisers of course. :)
Was nice to put some names to faces too. :D

I'll pop my ass along to the next one hopefully, all I need between now and then is more training, to lose 100lbs in weight, a steady income and a passport. :D

I think the FOCUS charity sounds like an excellent idea, props once again to Tammy for making it! (just as I'd got used to 'KungFuGrrrl' as well.. :D)

Thanks Jon! :)

Awesome Sifu John.... see I knew everyone would catch the MAP meet fever ;)

Blimey, dunno how I missed that thread! Fank oo Mizz Chick! :D

What actually happens at these meets? I've been reading some of the posts and getting general ideas but my brain's scrambled tonight. :D

I may be able to make it, gotta check birthdays (I know 3 people with b'days in July, but the exact days... :D), travel, etc. If I can make it I should be able to bring a couple of MA-head mates with me. One of whom is on this site, but shall remain annonymous 'til I've asked him about it. :D

Not everyone saw it happen, but everyone in all directions heard it happen.

I was paired up with Chris from CT in Sifu Marquez's Tai Chi Praying Mantis session.Sifu was giving Chris some tips and demonstrating on me some takedown or other and before I knew what was going on....*SPLAM!!!*
OUCH.My face felt tingly, but I was as surprised as anyone else that I wasn't dizzy or unconscious.Manuel apologized sincerely, and I understood he didn't want to land me on my splinted hand.
The session was great though. It was gratifying to learn the stuff.Chris from CT had to pause as well when I tried applying a choke but brushed his eye instead.OOps.
And I thought doing the Tai Chi thing meant less chance of hard contact!
:p
Next was the Escrima session.Mr Lamade was very informative and helped compensate for mmy one good hand on the sticks.Since I practice it at home it was easy to pick up the basics.

Then the lunch break.I met a woman I believe was a Hapkido practitioner, but I completely forgot her name.I don't even know for sure if she is on MAP Forum.I think she may be in one of the photos
Anyway we rushed outside to try to find a quick repast. She spotted a McDonalds, but we agreed we were looking to REPLENISH our strength not deplete it further  :D .We found a conenience store and just stocked up on some healthier foods, and I introduced her to Ritter Sport German chocolate bars,a must for anyone who likes a good choco-fix.
After cramming down our quick lunch we went back.

I met Firecoins and discovered he was also a kettlebell user.I signed up for the kettlebell session, and I found it was just what I needed for my own practices.I made my own kettlebells at home and they're more unweildy than the real deal, but with the instructor's guidance,I can't tell you how much I've benefitted.A wealth of knowledge past rubies I can now apply.

Finally came the blindfold training with Mister K.He taught us to use the five senses in their entirety to apply our skills in MA.He also taught me to be less tense all over. This stuck with me.I realized I was tense because I was afraid to let my hunches dictate my actions.I've always been taught not to act on a first impression, because that's too irrational. So we don't always pay attention to what our senses are telling us,because we are taught not to trust them.

During the entire session and and the dinner meetup afterwards, with Firecoins providing the comedy routine,I greatly enjoyed chatting people up,comparing notes and ideas on our respective experiences and observations in the martial arts.
Before I knew it,the day was done!
We had to part ways!I thought, what,it's already been a day?!It seemed like we only scratched the surface;a meetup like this just whisked by,and many of us agreed.
We need to make the next one longer.Maybe a three-day session is in order.
Later that night I went to a dance club.I chatted up more people about other stuff, and found the women there are much more welcoming to strangers,at least for a chat and a dance. You should have seen the girl I danced with!

As for a UK meetup,we're talking airfares and hotel rates which are very likely beyond my means.I only came to this one because I got free accomodations from my brother in Brooklyn. We'll have to see how much I'll have saved come summer.

That was actually "Craig from CT." :) His eye is fine. It was good enough to order food and beers afterward from the menu. ;)

Looking forward to next time.
