...isn't anything happening in the world of kuk sool?
surely someone has just passed a grading, learnt a new technique or a new part of their form that they'd like to share with us all???
personally, apart from normal lessons, i've recently graded a bunch of students. junior and adult, white belt up to DBN. which was fun. especially junior white belts :bang:

ignore my last post. I just did a bit of googling and it looks pretty awsome. Makes me wonder why anyone would bother training Taekwondo. Its like, Taekwondo.. but more...

a closer comparison would be korean kung fu (ship pal ki) mixed with hapkido. although kuk sool is much more than this and its own style, but it should at least give you an idea of this art. check out www.kuksoolwon.com for a better idea

whenever i describe it to non MA'ists i always say that it is a mix of tkd and hapkido with weapons thrown in for good measure. technically thats not correct but it gives a good idea of what it's all about.

tkd is very well known, kuk sool isn't. i'm sure that a lot of tkd practioners would enjoy ksw.

If you are thinking of starting Kuk Sool I strongly advise you try and go and watch a demo. If you are that desperate though I recommend you just go straight into a KSW club now and do a lesson :)

I agree Dave, it is very quiet on here. Not sure what I can add to the conversation though hehe. I (along with ksn_matt) am currently working on reverse sword form. A few changes have been put in place that I need to fix. Boring I know!

brilliant! just as i learn the form, and can't do it yet without some sort of mistake, they go and change it.
what are the changes?

Well it's easier for you to change it now rather than have years of getting used to it! Not much has changed really, only small details. I like to make sure I am doing things correctly though. It's all in your new book 3 you have for Christmas!

surely someone has just passed a grading,
We had a grading yesterday, I was / am going for my brown belt. There wasn't time to cover all the requisite technique sets so we'll finish off next class. The hardest bits (at least for me) are out of the way though - being systematically exhausted, and breaking things...
So I've nearly passed a grading :)

board breaking or bodily parts breaking?? :p

Well, I don't have a lot new going on since I won't have another test for like 2 years. I am learning a cool Juhl Bong form that KJN Middleton invented a long time ago. I have to say it's pretty sweet. When I eventually learn it all, and can do it well I'll see about posting a video of it.

Nothing much here either... I've been helping out/ trying to learn how to teach (skery stuff)... O, and I can finally do Baek Pal Gi Hyung(sp?) in opposite direction d(^_^). I had been struggling with that one.

Good stuff reading up on KSW ATM, seems like an interesting, well systemized and comprehensive Art.

Question, How does KSW compare to Hwrang Do from a practitioners POW?
I got 2 Hwrang Do books and the techniques seem pretty similar from my limited perspective.

I'm in Alabama for the week.
It has been a very hectic two months. I think I mentioned the surgery, it happened while I was back in Indiana. I got the plane tickets before going to Korea, because I knew my grandfather was ill. Well, he died the morning I was flying up. And after the surgery the doctor wanted me to stay in Indiana for the week.
So I got back with 4 days to the official deadline for turning in my Master's project. Fortunately negotiated an extension, but was still working on that pretty hard up to Thanksgiving.
Spent Thanksgiving through today working on catching up on my academic class. Between Korea and November, I was about five weeks behind on the work. But now I'm really close.
I did manage to talk KJN into letting me grade on Nov. 19, with only one additional restriction to my activities. But as of Saturday, I don't think they'd had all the testing forms back, so I don't have my new stripe yet. I'll probably get it next week when I'm back in class.
And I'm on travel. Which is sort of nice, gets me away from the activities I'd normally be doing. Can be good for focusing. But it also means not dealing with things I really need to deal with.
On Friday, the dean rejected my project. So now I'm going to be working on it through the Christmas and New Year's holidays. I'm told that the absolutely last day that the school can change my grade to pass and graduate me is Jan 10, so it's sort of nice to have the time to do it right.
Kuk Sool is going great. I'm up to Dahn Do Mah Ki 5, and Saturday got a little bit of Joong Bong Il Hyung. As of last Friday, I'm allowed to lift weights again... but the hotel doesn't have a weight room, so I'll probably have to wait until I buy my set.

I knew my grandfather was ill. Well, he died the morning I was flying up.
My sincere condolences.
I'm testing Friday for my red belt. I'm feeling good about practice. I've kind of settle in to a training schedule. I've learned Dae Geup Hyung and I'm ironing out the kinks in Go Geup Hyung. I'm beginning to see the YOU in the techniques and forms a bit better. The WON as well. I beginning to see circles all over the sets and hyungs. The fundamental aspects of the art are beginning to make more sense. I'm also feeling a bit more limber and my kicks are getting higher and harder. It's encouraging to see some progress. I've got some questions about forms that I'm going to start a new thread with, so...

Sorry about your grandfather ember, it always sucks to lose family...
I'm testing in a bit too Jsun, but I wish I were as confident of the outcome as you are. I'm afraid I just don't LIKE a lot of the blue belt material. Or trust most of it that much. Hitting my pressure points rarely does much to debilitate me (aside from a few obvious exceptions) which makes me disinclined to trust sets that focus on them overmuch. And due to the problem with people stealing our mats, we don't cover high falls very well or often. But I'll probably pass. I know all the stuff after all; really it's just my distrust of most of it that makes me apprehensive more than anything.

Under blackbelt techniques will usually never reach their full (damage dealing) potential until after black belt level, when you begin to review and learn the precision of those techniques with your higher level of experience and conditioning.
Keep in mind, some (if not most) under JKN techniques are even simplified movements of very advanced techniques, used to train your body how to move so that when you learn the advanced technique the movements feel more natural.
Just learn the basic techniques as well as you possibly can. You'll eventually learn all of the subtle angles, movements, and point strikes that make all of those techniques very effective.

JSun,
Good luck on your testing but isn't Dae Geup Hyung a brown belt form?
Yes sir, it is, and I'm not being tested on it. I just got into the books, learned the form and started watching upperbelts practice it and worked on it on my own time. I've got the basic postures all the way through fairly smoothly, but I still need a ton of work. KSN Tommy actually told me to slow my training down the other day. I can see his point, but I'm not trying to skip past earlier fundamental techniques and forms once I learn them. If there's one thing I've learned from all the TMA's I've studied it's that you can't just learn the basics and then move on. They're comprehensive. I still work on my Yang short form. I still practice Ki Cho Hyung every time I work on forms at my house, as well as the others. I really do enjoy working up a sweat and trying to improve my overall coordination, balance and flexibility. Going through all the forms is a great way for me to do just that. I'm hoping to learn the whole underbelt corriculum before I reach Dahn Bo Nim so I can go to black belt testing confident and solid, although that's still a long way away. In any event, thanks and I'll let everyone know how it goes.

Well, the testing went rather smoothly. I got an excellent grading in everything except kicks and precision, which still need mucho work. It really didn't suprise me. There's always room for improvement. I was informed I'll have the "pleasure" of performing a break using a spin kick at the next demo and promotion. Lovely, just lovely  On to red belt and still headed into the horizon of Kuk Sool. As soon as I reach first dahn, I'm hitting a European tournament. It would be a pleasure to meet some of the cats on this board.
