I know that we repeatedly get told not to take things for granted etc, and the meaning of the message tends to wear off after hearing it a few dozen times, but I was just given a bit of a wake-up call.
The Japanese student visiting us from Tokyo was absolutely amazed by the stars visible from our home, and this was on a fairly clouded night. For me, the stars have always been there, and I can't remember the last time I actually bothered to take a look at them. But her enthusiasm was infectious, and I could see just how wonderful the stars actually are. Take time to look at the small beauties around you that you often don't notice. I am certainly looking at things a bit more closely now.

Yeah it's true, I think we can take certain things for granted and forget what to be thankful for at times, even to the point where we will moan at things that we shouldn't really be moaning at, but we do (and yeah I realise I'm quite guilty of doing that at times ;)), but we're only human, we all make mistakes and do such things, but yeah it does take a 'fresh' mind/outlook from someone else to make us realise how grateful we should be at things! But then it's kinda nice in a way to 'forget' and then remember again, its like "hey, that's amazin!" :)

Again and again I embarass friends of mine by leaning over to smell roses as I pass them on the street. But what the hey, I love the smell of fresh roses. If there is some small thing you like to do that hurts no-one then enjoy it. If we dont enjoy our time here on this earth we may not get another chance.

Sadly the biggest thing taken for granted are the relationships formed..... That's the worst thing we ever do

Two friends of mine got together about a year ago.
The girl moved in with the boy after about 6-9 months
And now
They just take each other for granted, always arguing and complaining, never being thankful for each other.

"Take up one blade of grass,
use it as a sixteen foot golden Buddha"
I think that says it all.
It's a shame that most people have to have a near-death experience in order to realise how amazing life actually is. If you ever spend time with children between the ages of three and about five, their energy and wonder at the world just draws you in. You can't help seeing things through their eyes, for the first time, even things that you usually take for granted.

"Baruch bashan" an ancient statement meaning "....The blessings already are..."all we need to do is appreciate that everyday there are moments we can treasure and be thankful that some how ,somewhere, The Great Creator provides all of us every opportunity to be in harmony. There is always something good we can share. Some complain that they don't have shoes but others have lost their feet ..and can't wear shoes anymore.

Does it count if I'm frequently told I have the mind of a child between 3 and 5? :D
Seriously though, I try to stop and notice the little things in life. Sometimes they're the only things worth living for. People wait around forever for something really good to happen, instead they should simply enjoy the small good things. After all, lots of these happen every day

What is not more worthy of thanks than the sight of a friend's face or to feel your feet on this earth?
Sometimes I wish I could be freed from all these items I have so that I may learn to appreciate everything more.

I'll take your DVD and telly if that would help.
Seriously I wish I travelled more just arriving in a place still new and unfamiliar means I tend to notice and appreciate the world around me.

teacher - I'd agree to that, honestly. My Dad, whom the items belong to, wouldn't however. ;):D
And yeah I know exactly what you mean regarding travelling.
