Training in Hapkido and Ninjutsu. My Ninjutsu teacher also mixes in quite a bit of other stuff, with an overall philosophy of JKD (of which he is an instructor in). I can't claim to 'train' in Kali, but I sure end up doing alot of it somehow :p

I know drills and excercises from plenty of other arts, and have had minimal training in a bunch of other ones as well.

I'm currently into KuK SooL Won, which was at one time a style of Hapkido (I think). Speaking of Goju-Ryu Karate, I did about 5 months worth of it. It was OK I guess, just not really my thing. I've been in Kuk Sool for about 2 months now.

I'm curious ... how do so many of you manage to study several styles simultaneously?

Do you do one class of each per week or periodise your training year? Can you focus on one style at a time whilst keeping the others bubbling in the background? Or do you simply have a lot more time and energy than me? I'd love to know how you manage!

In an attempt to broaden my training, I recently I attended a Kuk Sul Won class. However, even the instructors there had had to learn such a vast breadth of techniques that they obviously hadn't been able to devote the time to become polished at any single set of techniques. Whilst I'm happy with my style, I'm curious how to broaden my training without following this example to become a Jack-of-all-trades and master of none.

Nimrook
07-Apr-2004, 09:23 AM
I manage it simply because my college classes are so late I don't have anything else to do during the day when I'm not working. I also do my boxing and jiu jitsu at the same place.

what exactly is Keysi fighting method?

Hi there,

I'm not familiar with it first hand, but have read on MAP that it's essentially a form of (well marketed) JKD in the UK. Martial Arts Illustrated magazine regularly features Keysi.

How

JKD is not a fighting method/style so I doubt the style you spoke of has anything to do with JKD.

I'm training Kenpo Kai 'cause it's just awesome and I love it. I also did some Taekwondo, but I realized I had what Taekwondo could offer me and much more with Kenpo Kai, so I gave it up.

I think you'll find, the king is BaJi Quan, closely followed by TaijiQuan, Bagua Zhang and Hsing I, then Wing Chun. :)

Bah, you know that performance wushu would own on Baji any day of the week. Your rooted stances and close ranged strikes are no match for my butterfly twists and intimidating poses!

I dabble in bits of many things, but mostly "consider" myself a practicioner of Shotokan Karate, BJJ, and performance Wushu (done some actual traditional wushu as well, it's just hard to find).

Baji the king? Bah! Maybe the king of making you think you're tough in a short period of time. Praying Mantis combines the best parts of all the best styles of its time (late Ming-early Qing, aka the golden age of CMA), integrated into one huge, comprehensive, yet super-efficient art. Our light, nimble footwork and super-strong fingers will cut that stamping, battering ram of a style down to size in no time.

Kendo , Aikido and Judo

Would change Judo for BJJ when I get my Black belt and above for Judo . BJJ had everything that Judo had . And Krav Maga when I manage to get my Aikido up to Black belt .

Would pick up Naginata ( will train with Kendo at the same time and same day ) , Iaido and Kyudo ( when I am a bit more older ) when had the chance .

I'm not actually practicing anything professionaly, but my biggest martial arts interrests are Jeet Kune Do and Zui Quan. (sounds like a weird combination?) And i'm practicing them both on an amateur level, all by myself. As a result, i'm not good at any of them of course. And i've never actually attended any martial arts classes.

And Krav Maga when I manage to get my Aikido up to Black belt .

Some of us might consider that the wrong way round, because you're learning a difficult and complex style before an easy, straightforward one.

Krav maga was designed to be simple and quick to learn, so that the military could become effective within very limited time.

Aikido takes years to reach 1st dan.

However, as you're already learning three styles, forgive me for adding further confusion! :)

(Incidentally, I tried both, but stuck with krav, because it suited me better. Although I enjoyed the aikido.)

I have been working with a boxing coach and just got started in Muay Thai. I have also been continuing in Tai Chi (Sun Style) and my first art, Taekwondo. I somehow find the time to work some Jujutsu in once in a while. I just basically started working out with anyone and everyone this last year. I am enjoying the learning and sharing. I figure the more I expose myself to, the better off I am. I would love to get into some Kali/Escrima.

Currently practicing Hapkido (though I've been very sick and injured, so I haven't been there in about 2 months)

Did a little bit of Muay Thai and no gi BJJ.

Now I'm looking into either Jun Fan JKD, Judo, Shaolin Chuan Fa Kung Fu, Yang Style Taijiquan, Judo, Greco Roman Wrestling, or Submission Wrestling.

Aikido and TaeKwonDo.
Have always been interested in checking out Krav Maga.
May look into BJJ when I've got further on in my other MA's.
Don't really want to confuse matters by having a million MA's.
Would have thought it would be better to be good at one than not-very-good at many.

Taoquan - I've never heard of Black Scorpion, is it an independent style or a subset of Shen Tao Tai Chi or a part of another style? I have an odd hobby of cataloging gungfu styles, you see (I was recently embarassed to recognize Baguazhang on my little cousin's Naruto fighting game when he was playing it) and I'm quite curious as this one is completely out of my experience.

on-topic:
The only style I am currently consistently practicing is Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.

Black scorpion ground fighting has a lineage to Wu-tang temple.
based on animal styles:
Salamander stregthening,
Tortoise,
Turtle,
Venoumous Frog
Among many others

It is a ground fighting style that prepares the practitioner for Python grappling and ground fighting.

It is a unique style of ground fighting as we are taught to fight from, literally, every single fighting posture. We go from standing, to deep squats, deep horse stance, middle horse, crawling on hands and knees, full body rolling etc. In all these stances we are required to do toughening and move flawlessly between them.
And then we learn applications in all these stances, for example deep squats we actually learn to hop (for movement) while throwing punches and even kicks. We do a move called caterpillar rolls where you roll back and forth along a 15-20' mat building up incredible speed. this way if you are knocked down with multiple opponents surrounding you, you can roll as quick as you can, learning to break ankles, knees etc.
The most interesing movement I have learned so far is Manta ray, we actually practice with someone putting on a arm bar behind our back and pinning us down face first. We learn to at least be able to get out knees and stregthen the neck and lower body in such a way as to be able to slide and move out of the way taking pressure of the hold. Thus enabling a practitioner, to break the hold. pretty cool stuff.

Ive done Wado for a few years, a few months TKD.

Now im doing Kickboxing. Ive also been going to a local sweat pit boxing gym but had to stop due to funds.

My kickboxing club also runs a mixed martial arts club, mixing kick and thai boxing with grappling and weapons training. Our instructors often fly out to the US to train and are going to train with Hermes Franca next month i believe.
