It seems that we get the same questions over and over again, perhaps creating a FAQ to address them would be helpful to new members.

Being a new person... I have been surfing trying to learn all I can. If you had a FAQ, it would have helped me quite a bit.

Here's the issue... I don't know what I don't know! And how can I start to ask intelligent (and presumeably non-repitious) questions in this case? I can't!

Speaking strictly as someone who has been interested in MA for decades (OMG! did I say that?) but who couldn't carry on an intelligent conversation on the topic for more than 60 seconds, here's what I would like to find somewhere, anywhere!:
-an overview of the different styles (what IS aikido vs. judo vs. you-name-it?)
-how can I decide which one would be best suited for me/for someone close to me?
-commentary about age, e.g., children of age group XYZ, "seniors", clutzes, whatever you (plural) think is important to differentiate
-how do I go about choosing a school/instructor? what should I look for? what indicates a school/instructor that I should run from without looking back?

Sorry... just a little frustrated. The more I learn, the more I know that I don't know what I don't know. Figure that one out! :-)

It would stop us having to rehash the same stuff over and over, we could tell people to look at the FAQ instead.

Brilliant- I was wanting to ask all these questions but didn't want to go gover old ground. Plus I know that a lot of beginners (might) want to know this

1. So big muscles are not necessarly slow? WHat determines this (training method)?

2. Where do the colour of belts come from and the progression? (swimming?)

There are a few more that I cant remember at the mo.

Kind Regards

This is currently being discussed at Mod/Admin level - we'll have some news on how we are going to go about it soon.

Yoda, I recommend having lots of questions that get asked a lot, and then putting answers to them.

Hmmm.... the problem is that there is often more than one right answer. A common format for each FAQ is needed I think.

Easy way out?

Everyone was a beginner at one point?

Keep up the MAP spirit and offer help to anyone who asks it?

That priviledge is reserved for the priviledge of 'Stavit' practitioners naturally! ;)

In the meantime, we might be able to direct people to the rec.martial-arts FAQ here : http://www-2.cs.cmu.edu/~mcweigel/rmafaq/rmafaq1.html

Or contact them to ask if we can use it as a base (and perhaps contribute any additions\enhancements we add back to them aswell).
