I have been asked to do a talk to about 170 children aged from 14 to 16 and to be honest i havent got a clue where to start.

The courses i do at the moment are geared towards women only and minimum 16 to 18 year olds

any ideas on what i should talk about as its a mixed class, there will be no practical so only a demonstration

I will talk about awarness etc but it will now be geared towards different problems (totally clueless)

HELP

going to try and break it down to smaller groups of about 40 or 50 and separate the sexes, that way i can focus better on the problems that each group may encounter

Take plenty of resources with you, ie info about various styles, with brief descriptions and pics, remember kids won't read much! (or listen for long), So make the demos fast paced, interesting and amusing.

I don't think kids will be massively interested in it purely as a self defense thing. It has to look fun for them to do it, so maybe push the whole sport side and maybe film stars

This is the main problem

I was thinking of doing a power point presentation and then adding some video clips of various SD techniques and maybe one or two demos max

still not sure if 170 people is a good idea, its at school so teachers will be around to keep kids in check, but thats all

I saw a little of a talk by a couple of guys i know done in front of a school (not sure on the numbers mind) and they did all there demos to music which seemed to go down well by the look on the kids faces.

I feel for you man I had to do the same thing to a lesser degree for a bunch of 30 scouts. My friends dad is a scout leader and he set me some guidelines, but the one he was most adamant about was not to promote violence. Now i found this quite challanging because my martial art Wing Chun is a very aggressive nasty close combat orientated art but I found that by directing my self at other aspects such as History of martial arts, there changing role in todays society, practical aspects of being able to defend yourself, awareness on the street and also principles that it was a much more productive lesson than if I had just grabbed a partner and beaten the ***** out of them explaining as I go what i was doing..... any way Good luck man because kids are ****ers, trust me I am one. I'd assume that most 14-16 yr olds would be able to cope with the issues raised at a more 'adult' talk.

I wouldn't cut out the women being attacked section, whilst I was still at school I was aware of 2 girls in my year that had been raped.

Perhaps also add in things they are likely to have experienced? being mugged for mobile phone / lunch money, SD in bullying situations (awareness I would have thought was key here)

If you aren't promoting your own MA school then flyers with local schools listed so they can go further if they want to.

Can you provide a bit more information?

1. How long do you have?

2. Are the teens going to participating, or only watching?

3. Is there one presentation? Or would you do one group first and then the other group?

4. Tell us about the classes/talks that you currently give to 16-18 year olds.

5. Is the goal to teach about martial arts or self defense?

That we we should be able to help a bit more.

Not wanting to sound bitchy or anything, but so you mean you don't know how to structure your talk or you don't know what your doing?

Umm 14 to 16 year olds can handle an adult talk. 14 to 16 year old girls face the same problems 16 to 18 yr girls. MEN.

1. talk to them as adults. They will appreciate it.
2 situational awareness does not need to be dumbed down
3. the "interview" and diffusing it.
4. anti rape
5. anti mugging
whatever you teach

LOL, thanks for that. It was the structuring i was concerned about, but the problems seem to have resolved them selves

Now we have sorted out ages and breakdown of the courses/presentations i can structure things accordingly

most of what you have written will be in there

A couple things that we've found very helpful....

1) AWSDA's motto: "You have an absolute right to defend yourself"
2) Once person tries to touch you without your permission he isn't a friend or a date anymore. He's a dangerous criminal.

If any of our teaching material is helpful, please feel free to use it. Our notes may be found at http://www.selfdefense.info . They are mostly used for college students; the information is mostly just as valid for younger teens.

Tel, that URL isn't working.

Two things to consider stressing:

1. for the ladies, they are statistically more likely to be attacked by people that they know and they need to be prepared for that.

2. for the boys, they're moving into the point in there lives where they are statistically most likely to get into trouble, fights, etc.

While the above isn't the best way to phrase it at all (and I'm not claiming it is) those are two important things for them to understand.

Argh. Okay. The URL is http://selfdefense.info without the "www".
