Just saw bloodsport after about 4 years!

Man is that guy athletic!!! His stretching was the main thing that caught my attention!

Anyone got opinions on him in the martial arts world? I would love to be THAT kinda flexible

Oh not, not Van Damn again! :D

This man is along with Steven Seagal one of the greatest jokes of the martial arts movie industry and is reknowned for having absolutely NO practical fighting skills except for muscleflex-do and hypermobile-jitsu as well as the acting talent that would make shakespearean actors commit suicide. Go to www.Bullshido.com. They have a whole thread dedicated to just how much he sucks and how much they hate him :D

As for the flexibility, you just need some more pain in your life by constant stretching.

Bullshido's got quite a reputation I think, but it's worth a look...

And your rite - I need more pain! :(

Van Damme's best Fighting Asset is his bum, it's there in full romantic lighting in every one of his movies as a Leif motif.

I quite 'enjoy' some of his films, but I don't take him seriously as a Martial Artist, just a piece of flummery usually on Channel 5 in the Uk, along with the Softcore pornos and 'Really very Deadly Nasty and Dangerous Police Car Chases 12'.

Seagal not for real-I'm gutted!

Van Damme = Ballet Dancer
Segal = Aikido Practioner or more accurately "having absolutely NO practical fighting skills" (I think he run a Dojo in Japan now)

My friend told me that JCVD got beat up in a bar by someone who did not even know MA's. Of course that is just hear-say.

some of his films are ok!

but isnt he more of a gymnast? what styles does he claim to have studied?

i have seen trained dancers pull off quite convincing jcvd moves!
also i may be slightly biased but steven seagal is an 8th dan in Aikido! so personally i dont think he can be classed in the same league as Van damme!

JCVD did get pummeled in a bar by his former bodyguard, the former golden gloves champion, ex biker and karate blackbelt Chuck Zito (actually has a small part in the popular Oz tv-series) JCVD had been talking smack about how bad he was and what a chicken Zito was, Chuck came over to discuss his opinion, JCVD used his deadly martial arts skills and was knocked down with one or two punches by Zito. Although that JCVD getting knocked out by a golden gloves champion doesn't excactly mean he can't fight.

I know loads of Martial Artists who have been beaten up in bars by people with no Martial Arts experience!

And no, i'm not one of them-I don't go in bars, they are full of nasty men.... :)

Adam, Zito was interviewed on the Howard Stern show afterwards and they kept showing a cartoon of JCVD"s head being bounved like a basketball. Zito apparently was eating dinner and VD walked in with actor friend. He asked Zito over to his table and Zito said when he was finished eating. Got up went to the washroom and VD relly started bad mouthing him. The bouncer, a good buddy, told Zito. When confronted VD denied it. Obviously Zito knew what an AS-HOLE VD was and proceeded to do the head bounce on the table. He would not answer any questions about motorcycle associations. If you ever saw Zito, he commands instant respect and no Bull----! No nonsense. Apparently he knew VD from being his bodyguard and doing some things for him in the movies for a few years.
Now VD may know MA but I have never seen him fight in real life only in the movies. And I know he can kick very well. Obviously he knows now to keep his mouth shut. Although I did see him on the tellie on one of those celeb shows drunk and running around with out a shirt. What an jerk! What an example! But he does have a nice bottom.

I saw a special on JCVD and it said that he claims to be a European Karate Champion. However, considering there was never any proof other then JCVD word, most people don't believe it.

I read in one of the websites that he used to study Shotokan, later his interest went to hollywood and he went to LA doing odd jobs and not able to speak a word of English, also there was a mention of him winning some kickboxing tourney...

I don't mind him, I think he's one of the better not really good white MA's. It's mainly his charisma that carries off in his films. Sure he might be a jerk in real life and he may not be able to fight, but who cares.

true enough. To explain why I call him a white, that means that it seems like he has basic knowledge of Martial arts, the equivilent of a white belt.

I remember hearing he was a pretty major coke head up until a few years ago (like 2 or 3).

I guess he doesn't have Martial arts sense, does he? As a Black Belt (?) where's the good example other than in the movies? Yes he does play some really good parts in the movies, but have you ever seen Example only someone who is a high profile martial artist like Chuck Norris do constant jerk off things. Sure we all have those moments in our lives, but get real. Aren't you supposed to walk your talk all the time? ie setting a good example to the kids? Now enough of JCVD for me. I rent his movies sometimes on rainey nights, but other than that, I don't rush to the movies like i do for Jackie Chan who by the way did not study MA as a young boy but was a child entertainer in China.
