View Full Version : Is Freestyle a style?

Out of curiosity, does this site recognise 'Freestyle' as a style and if so, can it have a dedicated forum?
Only just moving into the freestyle arena, I am very interested to hear from others that are training for the semi and full contact contests.
I know that many people frown upon the 'sports' arts but everyone is entitled to an opinion.
I apologise if I am alone in this or if this has been raised before.

Good to hear it, now could you answer my questions pls?
Is it recognised as a distinct style?
Can it have its own forum?

Hi Cyclone,
Is it recognised as a distinct style?
I believe that the term 'Freestyle' is most commonly used in the UK to describe those MA that are most involved with the points and competitive circuit.
If you wanted a forum to deal with 'Freestyle' issues, would you want it under 'Sporting Martial arts', or 'Eclectic Martial Arts'???
Either way there are people here with experience of both, so I'm sure you will get some support!

Thanks for the response.
Unless anyone has any objections, I think the term 'Sporting Martial Arts' would be perfect. I know there would be some cross-over even including arts that have never really been associated with competitions to the general public such as Aikido, but this cross over will only add to the community I think.
Its a whole new world for me, so it would be nice to talk about the competitions, techniques, success stories (as well as failures of course) and most of all try and give the freestyle 'nomads' somewhere to live....
It would be nice to get input from the people that like myself have tried the more traditional arts and are now training for the competitions, as well of course as those that loath the contests and the 'non classical mess' as I have seen freestyle referred to ;)
Its good to finally find a decent martial arts website with so many UK members (not that I mind other nationalities of course) and one that is well run.

Ultimately the decision as to how this fits into the Martial Arts Planet Forum rests with 'Cooler' and Ghostsuit.
I would reccomend you start a thread on 'Sporting Martial Arts' and find out which members find it of interest. People with a dislike for the SMA can simply ignore the thread. With enough input, this would then possibly justify a dedicated section in the forum. You probably could invite some other people onto 'M.A.P.' who share your interests.
Look forward to your input Cyclone!
