I just thought I'd share with you something my Jap teacher told me. We all know that sensei is the Japanese word for teacher, but the Japanese word for student is seito. See the common sei ? Sensei literally means sen past sei student. I just though that's something to think about. Not that it means that a teacher shouldn't also be a student.

I always thought the Japanese for student was Kohai?

Shihan is teacher, Sensei is closer to instructor. Remember also that a word isn't necessarily just the sum total of it's parts. There's also the inflection or bias that a person puts on it. I've heard people say 'Sir' in a way that'd make your hair curl. :D

Japanese is very interwsting, I wish I spoke it. Yakiniku, Teriyaki... aiki-do, kiai! te-maki, makimono... it's like a verbal jigsaw puzzle!

It is really an easy language... not nearly as hard as Chinese.
