Okay KSW MAPers, I have just been nominated by U of I to study abroad in Birmingham in the UK. I can't be certain this will happen until I get confirmation from Birmingham of course, but I'd still like to prepare as much as possible as soon as possible.

Sooooo.... anyone here from the area? What's it like? Is there a KSW school there? Any KSWers actually from Birmingham? Give me all the info!

Thanks

Brianna

P.S. I am SO looking forward to being able to meet some of you UK KSWers in person! Training in a different dojang, with different partners... AWESOME! :D

i don't live in birmingham so i can't tell you what it's like to live there. it's one of the biggest cities in the uk so you should find everything you want there.

there is a kuk sool club in birmingham, run by SBN john gravenall who will be promoting to KJN in korea this year.

Hi I'm new to this sight myself, not to mention bad with computers so bear with me..
I’ve been to train with John Gravenall himself and his students on many occasions and loved every minuet of it. Not only is SBN John an excellent martial artist but all his students are exceptional as well and very friendly. Your luck to be training with the Birmingham gang. P.s watch out for their xmas party’s ha ha

That's brilliant news, I'm really pleased for you.

I live in Derbyshire at the moment but if I'm still there ( I'm movong down to the south of the country lol) then we can meet up and I'll sort out some stuff connected with reiki and maybe give you a session. I don't mind travelling as I have a few friends in Birmingham and I could stay with them.

i personally haven't tranined under SBN john, but see him as a great master. you will defenitly be under good hands, and you get a taste of the british way in training, if you get a chance try and down to Norwich, the seminars are awsum. And you'll also be there for the tournements. i'm sure birmingham will be willing to accaept, so congrats.

baubin - has anyone warned you about the accent yet?

The Brummie accent could well be difficult to understand for foreigners, not to mention they'll have a few 'local' words (for local people naturally). :)

Have fun, Brum has just got a nice new shopping centre with a Selfridges. Plus is has excellent transport links to the rest of the UK. Not to mention a fine selection of curry houses - you must have a balti whilst you're in town.

Hey man!

So your coming to my city on the 6th of January eh? Niceone man!
I take it your going to be studying at Birmingham university right? What you studying?
I dont train in Kuk Sool Won myself, but im sure you'll have a great time training.

Birmingham is an amazing city with lots to offer. It is so diverse. Do you know which area of birmingham you'll be staying? I live in south birmingham which is quite nice.. alot nicer than north birmingham. If your a student and studying at bham uni your most likely to be staying around Selly Oak, Edgebaston, Bourneville, Northfield, Stirchley.. they aint too far from the campus itself.

The city centre itself has been done up recently, with the new bullring.. and other numerous shopping outlets.. the pavillions and the pallasades.. and also many high streets..

Good look on your venture here.. im sure you'll enjoy it! If you have any trouble.. PM me!

I'll be there for almost exactly six months, though I'm probably going to do a lot of traveling outside the UK during the spring break (might as well get it in while I can, right?). I study aerospace engineering, but while I'm in the UK I will be under Birmingham's mechanical engineering department, as they do not have an aero department.

But yeah, I am definitely looking forward to being abroad, seeing the sights and meeting the people (especially the MAists ;)). And I will likely take you up on the PM offer Feng, thanks :)

Finally got to the Birmingham dojang, here's my account:

I think things went okay, after all, it only took an hour for the jitters to go away instead of the two I was expecting. Just thought that after letting you all know that I was going, it was only fair to keep you updated :)
