Thr ridge hand is a technique that i haven't seen used in point sparring very much so i decided to add it to my arsenal. The only problem is that every time i try to use it, it dosen't work. Does anyone have any advice. Particularly in the style of go-ju ryu:yeleyes:     :Alien:

Well, we also use a ridge hand technique in Hapkido.

What do you mean exactly when you say "it doesn't work"?

In a sparring situation, I believe a ridge hand would best be used as a deceptive attack. In Hapkido we begin a ridge hand the same way would begin a reverse punch, only at the last minute do we change the position of our hand for the strike. So that the receiver of the blow might be expecting a straight blow to the face, yet end up getting the ridge hand to the side of the head.

If you plan on using it on someone, no matter how you pull the technique, setups shots would be a good option

hmm... never tried a ridge hand in sparring, might be useful to try though. Of course in sparring I try to stay away from getting shots with the hands in the head. as waya mentioned setup shots would be good as it is a rather slow strike

Thanks for your replies but could you give me an example of one of these setup shots that you are speaking of.

Throw a strike with your lead hand first. Use a flick-type jab, a short backfist, anything to hold their attention while the ridge hand comes around right behind it.

maybe your ridge hand iz too slow. The muscles used to swing around de ridge hand are not usually too strong on ya average joe, so exercise them each day.

Or perhaps you are throwing your hand out to the side and coming across instead of straight out and across? I notice alot of students who first learn the ridge hand almost make it like a haymaker. You need to set it upo with maybe a fake or another technique and the slip it iin like waya said.
