I have long hair that I wear in a ponytail or braid while training. This has always been a favorite target in class during self defense training. The attacker's ability to move around usually allows them to avoid a back kick. What has successfully worked for me in the past is to reach back and grab the hand that has my hair (if held close to the head) to regain some control. Turn to the side of the hand holding me, tucking my shoulder down to get under their arm allowing me to bring my hand up and pinch (an Okinawan Kiss) the inside of their arm. This results in a quick release as I finish my turn and I'm now facing them while controlling their hand that previously had hold of my ponytail. They are now wide open for any technique I wish to deliver.
I'm interested in ideas anyone would like to share about what has worked for them in this kind of situation.

Well I can't speak from real experience here,"never had a ponytail", but I do have a girl in one of classes that has a pony tail, the people do attack it once in awhile. The best part of your story is that you have found a way to overcome the situation and keep the hair!
Keep fighting!\

A quick solution....get your hair cut!

Not a preferable option.

What happens when you get attacked in the street with your hair loose? From experience, I can tell you it doesn't work so well. Unfortunately she had so much of my hair in her hand I couldn't even rip my hair out to turn and face her. I ended up pitching forward into the taxi and she let go a bit to break her fall.

Hmmm, I don't know. Never had it happen with my hair loose. Was she holding your hair close to your head or further down? If I can't get a hold of the person's hand I hold my own hair to keep my head from being yanked around.

Try sliding your hand under theirs. I have virtually no hair, but it works in headlocks and other such attakcs.
