Hi Ron,

I am a practioner of Seven Star Praying Mantis via the Lee Kam Wing Lineage, please to meet you.

I am more than willing for some mantis chat :-) although my knowledge is pretty limited because I have not practised this style very long.

For your interest I find the following forum a good place for mantis chat www.kungfumagazine.com/forum from there click on the northern mantis forum, sometimes it gets a bit to deep for a beginner like me there though! Another good forum is http://forums.delphiforums.com/Taijimantis I know it states Taijimantis but it caters for all styles really, this is my first choice for mantis chat just now as the Host Robert (Mantis108) is a great guy and seems to be happy to answer my questions which I am sure are very basic ;-)

Hope 2 hear from ya soon

We were talking about this in the Chat room the other night,
but Keef (Or anyone else for that matter), can you give me a recap as to the main differences between the Northern and Southern Mantis styles? In terms of technical emphasis etc?

Hi Sokklab, yes it was a good chat last night :-)

Northern & Southern Mantis are completly different styles and have little in common apart from the word Mantis. As far as I am aware Sothern Mantis used to go under a different name but at a point in history they used the term "mantis" as a blanket as such to hide what style they were actually practasing.

Southern Mantis as far as I am aware (check the net out for more info I dont know alot about it) is a close combat system which is said to have similar wroots to that of wing chun.

Northern mantis does not concentrate too much on one range, although individual stylists may concentrate on one range more than the other depending on there sub-style and personal preference.

If you wish for me to delve deeper into what Northern Mantis encomposes I would be happy to do so.

Check out http://www.geocities.com/sifu_carl/theory.html for some basic theory! I will look in my Lee Kam Wing Mantis book to further explain the theories better if you wish. I have just started a thread on the KungFumagazine.com site under the Northern Mantis Forum about the theories if you are interested.

Other important theories include the Dodge, Bounce, the hard & soft techniques etc etc

Another good site is http://www.mantisboxing.com/intro, try and remember though that different schools and teachers interpret things differently.

Cheers
