What type of Jiu -Jitsu is it?
Cause Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the way to improve ground work. if you are taking BJJ and have trouble on the ground, maybe BJJ isn't your thing.

yeh i agree with xplasma.
Have you ever done back to back? It's basicly like randori but on you're knees.Different rules apply but basicly you haveto pin your oponent whilst on youre knees.Oh and u start sitting back to back.
I found that improved my ground work.

Hello dee21
Many of your traditional Ju Jitsu schools don't do much
ground work because they come from combat that involved
multiple attackers, so going to the ground meant being overwhelmed. Many instructors will incorporate it though as
it is great for physical conditioning.

One way to improve your groundwork is to practice your techniques slowly untill you get the move down. Then practice with an apponent who will give you a little resistance. Afterwards have them resist you all out.
Alternate the moves from each side of your apponent back and forth. Example would be to armbar the left arm then move to the right arm then back to the left. Keep doing it untill it becomes second nature.
Do not have the same partner all the time. Mix it up with other people. Spar or grapple in 5 minute rounds with people. After 5 minutes are up switch apponents.
If you have plenty of time to spare, most gyms have wrestling mats. You can always practice there with your classmates for an unlimited number of hours.
All the above has worked for me. I've been grappling(BJJ) for the past 6 months. Its the same drills we do in school. We grapple with anybody, including the instructors.
The way to constant improvement of one's tecnique is through constant practice.

Most of the Groundwork we do is non-sporting. Ie using all the nasty techniques that you can think of to get you out of holds etc, when you are on the ground and as quickly as possible.
From a self-protection POV this is obviously preferable to learning to work for position as you do in Brasilian Jiu Jitsu.
The back to back drills mentioned by Sub zero is a really good drill as well.
The BJJ stuff is great if you want to become very proficient at Sportive Groundwork and/ or need or want to be able to feel more at ease in a difficult situation.
But not too at ease, obviously you don't want to actively seek to go to the ground in a real confrontation, you could get a very nasty surprise.
