Greetings,

I just got a CH Dan bong video on ebay.

I was curious to see what CH is all about so I watched it carefully keeping an open mind. Of course I compared it to THKD to see the differences in tech., style, skills of the Instr. ect.

All in all it's not a bad in regards to using a short stick for SD, there were a few moves that I though were good and I found all of the material to be usefull.

With that being said stylistcally I didn't feel it was in the vain of HKD but did show elements or glimmers of Hapkidoesque movements. I felt the Instr. Master Moore moved like he was a Kenpo praticioner with some Kali integrated movements as well. (again all these techniques would be effective) but I would have liked to see more pure HKD skills.

Also many of the techniques were done at very close range more common to a "Palm Stick/Yawara stick" 5-7" stick rather than the "Dan Bong" 12 to 14" inch weapon.

The Dan Bong lends itself to more distance and snapping movements for power. Master Moore did explain how to strike with the DB at the beggining of the video but seemed not to use the skills that much in the video he was more in close range and using it DB like a Yawara stick way too much.

Instead of using the DB at a distance to strike or parry the attacker punches he used alot of "Close Range" palm blocks entered in close and used alot of butt strikes and real close BD strikes. Again these techniques will work but I felt he failed to utilized proper distancing in many senarios letting the BD do the work on the attackers limb before entering to closer range.

To sum up.

Pros
1. Good explanations in general
2. Realistic techniques

Cons

1. Not what I'd call pure HKD
2. Not fully utilizing the full scope of the DB
3. I'm reccomend it as a good Palm Stick tape.

I give it 3 out of 5 stars.

American HKD,
Thank You for the great Review.

Again let me point out that The schools themselves have and teach their own short stick curriculum, the video Master Moore has put out is his interpretation of short stick employment and use, and is for those interested in learning or advancing their use of the short stick, maybe not as defined in THKD..
( he also has alot of years in Okinawan weapons)

I have not seen his videos yet,but I appreciate your review and this wll help me decide on getting those videos in the future.

Greeting,

I wouldn't get it for a DB video like I said, but for a Yawara Stick Video it's good.

That could be Master Moore's personal style which is fine. To me a instructional video should be the "systems interpetation" not the individuals personal style because anyone can cloud the essentials with thier personal favorites.

BTW please consider buying my copy I have no need to keep it any longer.

American HKD,
Thank You for offering the DB video,no offense to Master Moore but no thanks.
My instructor teaches us enough short stick, and as I do not carry a short stick,Umbrella or rolled up magzine around the actual need is not there to expand that knowledge any further.

As said Master Moore is a Master in CH but the video he created is his interpretation and his expansion on the use of the short stick.

It is also used it to coincide with his being able to certify trainers in short stick.
(as you have pointed out with the Cane master certification in a prior thread ,the cane and short stick are a part of hapkido and do not need their own specific certifications, but some people want it so there it is)

This brings up an interesting question. We have yawara sticks, dan bong sticks, Kali sticks, Jo sticks and canes. I am assuming that the differences
are in the lengths of the stick. So at what length does the name of the stick change?

If you are ever afforded the oppertunity to attend a seminar where Master Moore is instructing do so..I attended the CH seminar in Lexington KY one year and Master Moore was there..It must be experienced to believe..Same can be said for Master Materkowski in Denver..

I have recently rewatched Hapkido video by GM John Man So and in his set of videos he does what are supposed to be short stick techniques, what he is using is a Yawara stick of about 2 feet in the video and not a true short stick(which should be the apporoximate length of the users forearm bone).

Master So uses this as a club/baton and then goes into locks and throws, more so than blocks, strikes, locks and throws as in true short stick from a closer distance to the opponent.

So even among first generation GMs the length of the stick and the many uses and techniques vary.(perhaps the length has increased to be sellable to police departments)

As said By Dr Syn,training with Master Moore is a Great experience and one which people should take advantage of if possible.

Greetings

I have trained with GM So he's unorthodox in many of his approaches and basically started an eclectic system of HKD and his own assoc.

He is a talented MA.
