I've been looking for a good school that teaches Muay Thai and an effective form of groundfighting in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I've heard good things about Gibson's Martial Arts academy from a friend, and plan to check them out.
The website is www.gibsonsmartialarts.com . I know it's unlikely that anyone here has personal experience with this school, but I was hoping that some of you more experienced members could look the website over and share some comments about the school based on their styles, affiliations, etc. Also, What do you think about a school that incorporates so many different arts?
http://gibsonsmartialarts.com/arts.html lists the styles that they teach, and I'm particularly interested in Muay Thai, the Filipino arts (for weapons) and the groundfighting. The page states that "We use Marc McFann's ground system combining elements of Judo, Jujitsu, Kali, Silat, and Jeet Kune Do grappling." Can any of you tell me a little about Marc McFann's system?

Well, I don't have personal experience with the school, per se. However, a friend of mine was a long time student of Terry Gibson and is a certified instructor under Terry in Kali. He also helped run the school when Terry was dying and after Terry's death. He's a very good martial artist and attributes a lot of his skill/ability to Gibson.

Wow, I guess the martial arts world is smaller than I thought! This forum is a great resource. It amazes me that within a few hours of my post I got a responses from people with direct knowledge of the two people I was asking about! Thanks for the info, guys. This is sounding more and more like the right school for me. I think I'll go observe a lesson next week.
YODA, I guess what I'd like to know about Marc Mcfann's ground system, is how does it compare to other ground systems such as BJJ in actual self defense situations? Also, does it include much striking, or is it mostly grappling and submission holds?

It also helps to know that most of the MODs here feel that we have some of the best people from all over. So most times if you need help with something, one of our great members can most likely help you.

Marc's grappling has a strong BJJ - Shubmission grappling base. As a self defence system per se it ROCKS! It is usually taught ahnd in hand with standup & striking skills - especially once you have a good working knowledge of the foundation - positional control.
See my article on "The Basic 4" - This is from Marc's system.

Thanks, YODA. That's very helpful. I think this is what I'm looking for.
My groundfighting skills leave a little to be desired right now. With my wrestling background, I tend to flip people over on their back and then think, "hey, I pinned him! Why is he still punching the crap out of me?" :)
