JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - A burglar who tried to strangle a South African woman ended up in hospital with a fractured skull when the 45-year-old karate expert fought back, a local newspaper reported on Tuesday.

The Star said Marietjie Fourie, who will compete in the Shotokan Karate World Championships in 2003, let fly a flurry of blows when her attacker grabbed her at her home in the port city of Durban.

The man struck back, but Fourie grabbed wooden fighting sticks joined by a chain and lit into him, putting him in hospital with a smashed skull and facial bones.

Fourie was quoted by the newspaper as saying it was the third time she had physically repelled intruders or attackers.

"Every time I have caught someone trying to break into my house or attack me, I have beaten them off, incapacitating them or forcing them to flee," she said.

South Africa has one of the world's highest rates of violent crime and violence against women is widespread.

Then there is the other side of the martial artist, the defender.

Just imagine!

I had to browse the MA forum to learn about happenings in South Africa. :-)

But then again who has time to read the papers? - when you are busy browsing the MA forum? :D

Remind me not to pick on any older women for a while LOL

Personally I think he should stick to trying to bite Pit Bulls, it's safer :-)

I remember reading a story in the paper a few years ago about an elderly lady who was black belt when she was younger, beating the crap out of a 20 something mugger. It was actually quite funny in a way. He tried to get her to hand over her purse, so she kicked him, and knocked him over. He got back up and tried again, so she kicked him again. He even got back up a third time and tried again, but ran of after she kicked him over again. By the time the police arrested him later that day, he needed hospital treatment! :)

My Sensei ran a self-defence course for OAP's up in Aberfeldy about five years ago. A few months later he heard in the papers that one of the old ladies was subjected to an attempted mugging. The old dear used her walking stick to trip him up and pin him on the ground using a nose bar until someone phoned the police. The mugger was a 17yr old boy.

You can just imagine what his mate had to say to him about that!

Thanx

Older members of society blatently carrying weapons..... I love it :D

Checked my teachers website, and spotted one of his day-time sessions I hadn't seen before. It is for anyone, but may be suitable for older but still active people. He calls it:

Cane & Able

Got to love his style ;)

Anybody else ever see (I think it was real tv) the tv episode the included a story about the guy who tried to car jack a van that contained the US Olympic Judo Team (think it was US).

Apparently they messed him up pretty good.

Yeah, that happened down-state from me...completely hilarious! How stupid can you be to try to carjack a van (with no weapons) with a huge Judo Ass. logo on the side, full of people? Wrong move.
